There is no universal winner between NVIDIA GPUs and Huawei Ascend chips. The useful comparison is a complete accelerator platform running your exact model: hardware, memory, interconnect, framework support, compiler, operators, deployment tools, power, serviceability and acquisition constraints. NVIDIA’s CUDA-based GPUs and Huawei’s Ascend NPUs use different architectures and software stacks, so peak arithmetic figures alone cannot predict which will serve your workload better.

What you are actually comparing

NVIDIA sells GPUs that can run graphics and general-purpose parallel workloads, with AI acceleration exposed through the CUDA programming platform and its libraries. Huawei describes Ascend products as neural-processing units (NPUs) built around AI Cores and supported by its Compute Architecture for Neural Networks (CANN) stack. Both are AI accelerator platforms, but they are not interchangeable chip categories.

That distinction affects every layer of a deployment. A model may run through PyTorch or TensorFlow on either platform while using different kernels, compilers, graph transformations, memory allocators and communication libraries underneath. An operator that is highly optimized on one platform may fall back to a less efficient implementation on the other. Framework support therefore means “a path exists,” not “the model will run at the same speed, with the same features or with the same engineering effort.”

How do NVIDIA GPUs compare with Huawei Ascend chips?

NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem is the more familiar programming target for many AI teams, while Ascend deployments use CANN and Ascend-specific runtime and operator facilities. Huawei documentation describes CANN support for frameworks including PyTorch and TensorFlow. Huawei’s 2026 keynote also said Ascend supported more than 90 third-party open-source projects, including PyTorch, Triton, vLLM and veRL. That is a company-reported ecosystem count, not an independent compatibility audit.

  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

The practical question is whether your exact model, version and serving path use efficient native operators. Check attention variants, quantization kernels, collective communication, custom CUDA or Ascend extensions, tokenizer and pre-processing code, and monitoring integrations. A model that is officially supported can still require graph changes, unsupported-operator workarounds or a different batching strategy.

Architecture and software-stack differences

NVIDIA: CUDA-programmed GPU platforms

NVIDIA positions its data-center GPUs as CUDA-programmed accelerators, with vendor libraries and runtimes covering dense and mixed-precision math, deep-learning primitives, collective communication and inference serving. NVIDIA’s description of its dual-reticle Blackwell Ultra GPU calls it a “single, NVIDIA CUDA-programmed accelerator.” Treat that wording as a vendor product description: it explains the programming model, not an independent performance result.

CUDA familiarity can reduce migration work when your team already uses CUDA extensions, NVIDIA-specific profilers or libraries. It does not remove the need to validate a particular GPU generation, driver, CUDA release and framework build.

Huawei: Ascend NPU platforms and CANN

Ascend systems use Huawei’s CANN software stack to compile and execute models on Ascend hardware. CANN provides runtime and operator facilities and framework integration, but model portability depends on the operators and versions in your workload. Existing code may need Ascend-compatible extensions or changes to graph compilation and device management.

In a September 2025 keynote, Huawei deputy chairman and rotating chairman Xu Zhijun said: “For CANN, we will open interfaces for the compiler and virtual instruction set, and fully open source other software.” The keynote announced a target of December 31, 2025 for open source and open access based on the existing Ascend 910B/910C design. That was an announced plan; confirm the current repository and licensing status before treating it as completed.

Vendor specifications: useful boundaries, not a verdict

Published specifications describe what a design is intended to support under stated conditions. They do not establish end-to-end model throughput, latency, utilization or cost for your service. Do not place a peak NVIDIA number beside an unmatched Ascend number and call the larger figure a winner.

For example, NVIDIA’s 2025 Blackwell Ultra technical material reports the following for the described GPU:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Metric Vendor-reported value How to interpret it
Dense compute 15 petaFLOPS of dense NVFP4 compute A peak figure for the stated NVFP4 format and product configuration; it is not an end-to-end application benchmark.
High-bandwidth memory 288 GB HBM3E Capacity available on the described GPU; usable model capacity also depends on runtime overhead, allocations and serving configuration.
HBM bandwidth Up to 8 TB/s Advertised memory bandwidth; real workloads may be limited by access patterns, kernel efficiency or communication.

These are NVIDIA specifications for that Blackwell Ultra product family. The reviewed material does not provide a directly matched Ascend specification set, test method or system configuration, so the figures cannot prove a cross-vendor advantage.

Why the server and rack matter as much as the chip

Large-model serving and training are distributed-system problems. Compare the delivered server or rack, not only an accelerator card.

  • Host CPUs and memory: CPU generation, system RAM and data-loading paths affect input processing, checkpointing and orchestration.
  • Accelerator memory: capacity, bandwidth, allocator behavior and key-value-cache use determine whether the model fits and how many requests can run concurrently.
  • Accelerator links: NVIDIA systems use NVLink and related GPU connectivity; Huawei describes UnifiedBus and Atlas SuperPoD designs. Compare link topology, bandwidth, hop count and collective-communication behavior in the actual configuration.
  • Networking: fabric speed, adapter support, topology and software collectives can dominate multi-node training and inference.
  • Cooling and power delivery: rack-level power, liquid or air cooling, redundancy and facility limits determine whether the advertised configuration can be deployed.
  • Operations: firmware, drivers, telemetry, replacement procedures, spare parts and support expertise affect uptime and engineering workload.

Huawei’s 2025 keynote reported more than 300 Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoDs serving more than 20 customers. Those are company-reported deployment counts and are not directly comparable with NVIDIA sales or installed-base data. They indicate that Huawei has described large deployments, not that every customer will obtain the same result.

Which AI accelerator is better for my workload?

Start with the service objective rather than a chip label. The relevant output may be training time, tokens per second, first-token latency, inter-token latency, image throughput, cost per request, or the ability to run a model inside a fixed power envelope.

Training and fine-tuning

Record global batch size, sequence length, gradient accumulation, optimizer, checkpoint frequency and distributed strategy. Measure time to a fixed number of optimizer steps and confirm that the loss curve and final quality match. A faster step that requires smaller batches, more communication or additional graph work may not reduce total project time.

Large-language-model inference

Measure time to first token (TTFT), inter-token latency (ITL), completed requests per second and generated tokens per second at realistic concurrency. Test prompt and output lengths separately; a system can excel at short prompts while struggling with long-context key-value caches. Include warm-up, queueing and out-of-memory behavior.

Computer vision, recommendation and other models

Use the production input resolution, preprocessing, postprocessing and quality thresholds. Report images or samples per second alongside latency percentiles. If the model uses custom kernels or unusual operators, verify that they execute on the accelerator rather than silently falling back to the host CPU.

A fair, repeatable comparison procedure

  1. Freeze the workload. Select an exact model revision, tokenizer, dataset or request trace, prompt and output lengths, quality target and stopping criteria.
  2. Freeze numerical settings. Record precision, quantization method, calibration data and any accuracy change. NVFP4, FP16, BF16, INT8 and other formats are not interchangeable peak-performance claims.
  3. Record the software bill of materials. Capture operating system, driver, firmware, CUDA or CANN release, framework, compiler, libraries, serving engine and custom extensions.
  4. Document the system. List accelerator model and count, HBM capacity, host CPU and RAM, local storage, network adapters, topology, cooling mode and power limits.
  5. Warm up and repeat. Exclude one-time initialization only if you report that choice. Run enough iterations to expose steady-state behavior and variance.
  6. Measure both throughput and latency. Report first-token latency, inter-token latency, end-to-end latency percentiles, throughput, concurrency and batch size. For training, report time to the same step or quality target.
  7. Check utilization and fallbacks. Inspect accelerator utilization, memory use, host transfers, communication time and unsupported operators. A high-level framework success message is not proof of efficient device execution.
  8. Verify quality and reliability. Compare accuracy or generated-output quality, failed requests, numerical instability, restarts and recovery behavior.
  9. Publish conditions with the result. Present findings as results for the named model, software and system—not as a universal ranking.

Memory and numerical format: the usual hidden constraints

Model fit is more than parameter count. Weights, activations, temporary workspaces, runtime metadata and the key-value cache all consume memory. During serving, long contexts and high concurrency can make the cache larger than the model weights. Host-memory transfers may keep a request alive while sharply increasing latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the precision used for every measured result. A vendor’s peak number may use a lower-precision format that changes quality or requires calibration. Compare like-for-like precision first, then test whether a lower-precision option meets your accuracy or safety threshold. If quantization changes output quality, report that trade-off beside the speed result rather than hiding it in a footnote.

Scale-out efficiency and communication

Adding accelerators does not guarantee proportional performance. Measure scaling from one device to the full target count and calculate useful work per device. Report the topology and collective library because all-reduce, all-gather and tensor-parallel traffic can become the bottleneck.

NVIDIA’s NVLink-based connectivity and Huawei’s described UnifiedBus and Atlas SuperPoD approaches should be evaluated in the complete system. Ask for observed scaling efficiency, not only link bandwidth. A configuration with fewer but better-connected devices can outperform a larger count with congested or indirect communication.

Operational evidence: what field reports can and cannot tell you

A 2026 arXiv preprint describes failures, workarounds and hard limits encountered in two Ascend 910 inference deployments. That evidence is valuable because it exposes operational friction that a datasheet may omit. It is not a controlled NVIDIA-versus-Huawei benchmark and does not represent every Ascend installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use such reports to create acceptance tests: reproduce the reported model and software path where possible, identify whether a workaround belongs in your maintenance plan, and test failure recovery. Do not turn two deployments into a universal statement about reliability or compatibility.

Developer ecosystem and migration effort

Huawei’s 2026 keynote reported more than 5,200 monthly active developers in the CANN community. Huawei supplied the figure, and the keynote did not provide an independently audited methodology. Community size can signal available knowledge, but it does not measure the support quality your team will receive for a particular operator or release.

Estimate migration work explicitly:

  • Inventory custom CUDA, Triton or device-specific extensions.
  • Map every model operator to a tested implementation and identify CPU fallbacks.
  • Port data pipelines, distributed launch scripts, monitoring and profiling.
  • Reproduce numerical results and regression tests at production batch and sequence lengths.
  • Budget for parallel support while software and firmware versions change.

Availability, cost and procurement

Current orderability, regional stock, export eligibility, street price and total system cost are not established by the evidence summarized here. Do not publish a “best value” conclusion without current quotes for the same deployment category.

Request comparable quotations that include accelerator count, host system, memory, networking, storage, cooling, software support, warranty, installation and electricity assumptions. Ask whether the quote is for a data-center system, workstation or consumer product. NVIDIA product families span all three; a consumer GeForce card is not an equivalent replacement for an Ascend data-center system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also price engineering and migration. A lower hardware quote can be outweighed by porting custom operators, retraining staff, validating numerical changes or maintaining two software stacks. Conversely, an existing supply agreement, local service capability or a required deployment geography may make one platform practical even when its peak specification is not higher.

Roadmaps are not availability guarantees

Huawei’s 2026 keynote said Ascend 960DT was expected in the first quarter of 2027 and Ascend 960PR in the third quarter of 2027. Those were roadmap statements at the time of the keynote, not confirmation that the products later became orderable. Verify launch status, specifications and regional access before basing a design on either part.

A decision checklist for buyers and engineers

  • Can the exact model compile without unsupported operators or unacceptable CPU fallback?
  • Does the chosen precision meet the quality target?
  • Does accelerator memory hold weights, activations and the expected key-value cache at target concurrency?
  • What are TTFT, ITL, tail latency and throughput under the real request mix?
  • How does performance scale across the planned topology?
  • What full-system power, cooling and rack capacity are required?
  • Who will support drivers, firmware, compilers and failed hardware?
  • What migration code and test coverage must be maintained?
  • Can the system be procured and serviced in the deployment region?
  • Which figures are vendor specifications, which are your measurements and which are third-party observations?

Bottom line: compare the platform under your workload

NVIDIA GPUs and Huawei Ascend chips should be judged by a controlled, workload-specific evaluation. NVIDIA offers a CUDA-programmed GPU platform; Huawei offers Ascend NPUs with CANN and a growing, company-reported software and deployment ecosystem. Neither the 15-petaFLOPS Blackwell Ultra NVFP4 figure nor any unmatched Ascend headline number predicts your service’s throughput or cost. Select the platform that meets your model’s quality and latency targets, fits the memory and interconnect design, can be operated by your team and is actually procurable where you deploy.
