There is no universal winner between DLSS, FSR and XeSS. They are evolving families of reconstruction, frame-generation, anti-aliasing and latency technologies. The best result depends on the game build, feature version, graphics card, output resolution, internal render resolution and scene. Compare the same mode under matched conditions, and keep directly rendered frames, generated frames and input latency as separate measurements.
For a practical choice, start with the games you play and the GPU you own. Confirm that the game supports the required feature, verify that your exact GPU supports it, then inspect motion—not just a paused screenshot—at your target resolution.
What DLSS, FSR and XeSS actually are
“Upscaling” is often used as if it described one feature, but each vendor offers a suite. A super-resolution mode renders the game internally below the display resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image. Frame generation inserts synthetic frames between traditionally rendered frames. Ray reconstruction replaces some ray-tracing denoisers. Dedicated anti-aliasing modes and latency technologies address different problems again.
These features are not interchangeable. Super resolution changes how the game produces an image for the display; frame generation adds images between rendered frames; and anti-aliasing can smooth edges without reducing the game’s render resolution. A comparison should identify which feature is being tested, not just the vendor or suite name.

NVIDIA DLSS
NVIDIA describes DLSS as a neural-rendering suite that uses RTX Tensor Cores. Its documented family includes DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA. DLAA is an anti-aliasing mode that operates at native resolution rather than upscaling a lower-resolution image.
NVIDIA’s current overview describes DLSS 4.5 as adding Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and a second-generation transformer model for Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction. Feature eligibility is not uniform across GeForce generations. Multi Frame Generation is identified for GeForce RTX 50 Series hardware, and NVIDIA also lists RTX PRO Blackwell products for the current multi-frame capability.
AMD FSR
AMD presents FSR as a family of upscaling and frame-generation technologies rather than one fixed algorithm. Different FSR revisions and components have different hardware requirements. FSR 4 is an ML-accelerated upscaler trained on high-quality ground-truth game data; AMD tied its launch support to Radeon RX 9070 Series graphics and supported games.
AMD GPUOpen currently describes FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 and ML-based inference for Radeon RX 9000 and RX 7000 discrete graphics architectures. That does not turn every earlier FSR feature into an RX 7000-or-newer requirement: check the requirement for the exact FSR revision and mode exposed by a game.
Intel XeSS
Intel’s XeSS 2 documentation separates XeSS Super Resolution (XeSS-SR), XeSS Frame Generation (XeSS-FG) and Xe Low Latency (XeLL). XeSS-SR is designed for cross-vendor platforms that meet its graphics-capability requirements, while XeSS-FG is documented for Intel Arc GPUs with XMX acceleration.
Intel’s developer material now presents XeSS 3 and multi-frame-generation features. Because names and compatibility are changing quickly, treat XeSS 2 whitepaper requirements and current XeSS 3 descriptions as versioned information, not as one permanent specification.
Feature comparison at a glance
| Suite | Super resolution | Frame generation | Multi-frame generation | Other functions | Hardware qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DLSS | DLSS Super Resolution; current versions include a transformer model | DLSS Frame Generation | DLSS Multi Frame Generation; NVIDIA identifies RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell support | Ray Reconstruction and DLAA | Varies by feature and GPU generation; an RTX card that supports Super Resolution is not automatically eligible for every frame-generation mode |
| FSR | Multiple revisions, including ML-accelerated FSR 4 | FSR frame-generation technologies | Feature availability depends on the FSR revision and game implementation | Upscaling and related temporal technologies | Varies by revision; FSR 4 launched with Radeon RX 9070 Series support, while FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 is described for RX 9000 and RX 7000 discrete GPUs |
| XeSS | XeSS-SR | XeSS-FG | XeSS 3 documentation includes multi-frame-generation features | XeLL low-latency technology | XeSS-SR can run on qualifying cross-vendor hardware; XeSS-FG is documented for Intel Arc GPUs with XMX acceleration |
The table describes feature families, not a promise that a particular game exposes every item. A game may ship an older SDK, omit frame generation, or restrict a mode to certain GPUs even when the broader suite supports them.

Which produces the best image quality?
DLSS, FSR and XeSS can each look excellent or show distracting artifacts. A ranking made from a different game, driver, output resolution or internal scale is not a reliable answer for your system. Reconstruction quality is most visible in fine geometry, foliage, thin wires, text, reflections and moving particles.
Detail and aliasing
At the same output resolution and quality target, inspect whether small geometry remains resolved instead of turning into blur. Compare stair-stepping on diagonal edges and crawling aliasing during a slow camera pan. A high-quality still image can conceal temporal instability that becomes obvious as soon as the camera moves.
Menu presets alone are not enough to establish a fair match. The “Quality” option in one implementation may use a different internal render resolution or reconstruction behavior than another vendor’s option. Record the render scale or internal resolution when the game exposes it, and describe any mismatch rather than implying the modes are pixel-for-pixel equivalents.
Ghosting and disocclusion
Temporal methods use information from previous frames. When an object moves or the camera reveals previously hidden scenery, stale information can leave trails or smears. Look behind moving characters, on weapon silhouettes and around rapidly rotating objects. The game’s motion vectors, transparency handling and integration quality often matter as much as the vendor label.
Shimmer, foliage and particles
Thin leaves, chain-link fences, hair and sub-pixel detail can shimmer when the reconstruction cannot settle on a stable answer. Smoke, sparks and translucent effects are difficult because they change rapidly and may have incomplete motion data. Record moving footage or observe a repeatable camera path instead of judging only a screenshot.
UI and text
Menus and fixed HUD elements should normally remain crisp because they are composited separately, but some implementations process portions of the interface through the reconstruction path. Check small text, reticles and map labels while moving. If a UI element flickers, determine whether the game offers a native-resolution UI or an interface-rendering option.
Why performance numbers are easy to misread
Super resolution reduces the number of pixels the game renders directly. That can increase the rate of traditionally rendered frames, but the result depends on the internal resolution selected by the quality mode and on whether the workload is limited by the GPU, CPU, ray tracing or another subsystem.

If the relevant bottleneck is not the rendering workload that upscaling reduces, the increase in direct frame rate may be limited. Likewise, changing the graphics preset, ray-tracing settings or output resolution while switching upscalers makes it harder to attribute a performance difference to the feature itself.

Rendered frame rate versus displayed frame rate
Frame generation creates additional images between traditionally rendered frames. A counter may therefore show a higher displayed frame rate without the game simulating input, physics and every world update at that same rate. Always report the average and low-percentile rate before generation, then report the displayed rate after generation with the feature clearly labeled.
NVIDIA’s January 2025 DLSS 4 launch material stated that DLSS Multi Frame Generation “generates up to three additional frames per traditionally rendered frame.” That was a vendor description of DLSS 4 at launch, not a cross-vendor benchmark or a current limit for every DLSS version. NVIDIA’s current developer page describes up to five generated frames per rendered frame on supported GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell products. Both figures require their stated hardware and feature context.
Those multipliers describe generated-frame capability, not a promise of a particular real-world frame rate or image-quality result. A useful report keeps the directly rendered baseline visible beside the generated or displayed figure, rather than presenting only the larger number.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Latency and responsiveness
Generated frames do not replace the need for a solid base frame rate. If the game is producing a low rate of directly rendered frames, inserted images can make camera motion appear smoother while controls still feel tied to the slower underlying updates. Measure or report input latency and frame pacing with the feature enabled. XeLL, NVIDIA’s latency-related options and AMD’s corresponding implementation may have different names and behavior, so do not infer responsiveness from the frame counter alone.
Whether frame generation is worthwhile therefore depends on both the smoother displayed motion and the response you feel when interacting with the game. For a latency-sensitive game, prioritize responsiveness and stable direct rendering; for a single-player game, you may value smoother apparent motion more, provided the baseline and frame pacing remain acceptable.
Vendor multipliers are scenario-specific
Official announcements may quote large performance multipliers, but those numbers depend on the selected game, GPU, resolution, graphics settings and complete feature configuration. They are company claims, not neutral head-to-head testing. Do not compare one vendor’s best-case multiplier from one scenario with another vendor’s result from a different scenario.
How to make a fair three-way comparison
Use this procedure when testing a game yourself or evaluating published benchmarks.
Recommended Free Tools
- Fix the game build. Record the game version, API, driver version and enabled patches. An update can change shaders, motion vectors or the reconstruction SDK.
- Choose one repeatable scene. Use the same save point, camera path and weather or time-of-day state. Include a demanding traversal and a scene with foliage, particles or reflections.
- Keep display conditions constant. Use one output resolution, refresh rate, HDR setting and graphics preset. State whether dynamic resolution, ray tracing and V-sync are enabled.
- Match the quality target. Select equivalent quality modes where possible, and record the internal render resolution or scale reported by the game. “Quality” labels are not guaranteed to represent identical pixel counts between vendors.
- Test super resolution alone first. Capture native-resolution output, each upscaler at the chosen mode, and a representative still crop. Do not enable frame generation until the reconstruction comparison is complete.
- Measure direct rendering. Log average FPS and a low percentile such as 1% low before frame generation. Include frame-time graphs when available; a high average with severe spikes is not smooth play.
- Enable generation separately. Record the directly rendered rate, generated or displayed rate, frame pacing and latency. Label the result so a reader cannot mistake displayed frames for fully rendered frames.
- Inspect motion. Review a camera pan, rapid traversal, disocclusion behind moving objects, foliage, particles and UI. Use the same clip length and playback speed for every mode.
- Write down limitations. Note missing modes, crashes, obvious ghosting, shimmering, broken HUD elements or a requirement to use a particular GPU generation.
For a useful published result, include the game and feature version, test hardware, output resolution, mode, settings and measurement method. Show both still crops and moving footage where possible: the stills help readers inspect fine detail, while motion reveals temporal stability, disocclusion and frame-pacing problems. If a feature cannot be tested on the same GPU class, make that limitation explicit instead of presenting the comparison as a controlled ranking.

Does FSR work on Nvidia cards?
Some FSR components are designed to run on hardware from multiple vendors, so a game may expose an FSR upscaler on an Nvidia GPU. That does not establish that every FSR revision, ML model or frame-generation feature will work on that card. Read the game’s requirement text and AMD’s current support information for the exact revision. The same principle applies when using XeSS on non-Intel hardware: XeSS-SR’s cross-vendor design is not a blanket guarantee for XeSS-FG or newer multi-frame features.
What graphics cards support DLSS?
Support is feature-specific rather than a single yes-or-no label. RTX Tensor Cores enable the DLSS family, but individual capabilities vary by generation. NVIDIA identifies GeForce RTX 50 Series for DLSS Multi Frame Generation and lists RTX PRO Blackwell products for its current multi-frame claim. A different RTX generation may support Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction or Frame Generation without supporting Multi Frame Generation. Check the game menu and NVIDIA’s current feature documentation for your exact model.
Choosing for different types of games
Competitive shooters and other latency-sensitive games
Prioritize directly rendered frame rate, consistent frame times and measured responsiveness. A lower-quality upscaler that preserves stable detail may be preferable to a mode that adds shimmer. Treat frame generation as optional until you have confirmed that controls remain responsive for your play style.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSingle-player games with heavy ray tracing
Upscaling can recover performance lost to ray tracing, while Ray Reconstruction or equivalent denoising features may alter reflections and indirect lighting. Evaluate the whole image in motion; a sharper reconstruction does not automatically mean more accurate ray-traced detail.
High-refresh displays
Match the feature to the refresh-rate target you can sustain. If direct rendering is already near the display limit, generation may add little practical value and can introduce artifacts. If direct rendering is steady but below the target, generation can improve apparent motion, provided latency and frame pacing remain acceptable.
Older or mixed-vendor systems
Start with the modes your existing GPU and the game actually support. A cross-vendor super-resolution option may be useful even when vendor-specific frame generation is unavailable. Do not select a graphics card solely for a suite name without checking the games you intend to play.
A practical choice sequence
- Make a shortlist of the games you play and check which reconstruction, generation and latency options each one actually offers.
- Check the exact GPU model and generation against the requirements for each feature, not just the suite name.
- At your target output resolution, compare the available upscaling modes without frame generation first.
- Inspect a repeatable motion scene for detail loss, ghosting, shimmer and interface issues.
- Only then test frame generation, keeping the direct-rendered rate, displayed rate and responsiveness distinct.
If you are considering a hardware change, start with the games and features you want rather than buying for a brand label. Graphics cards that support DLSS, Radeon RX 9000 graphics cards and Intel Arc graphics are relevant product categories, but feature support and game integration still vary. No single card recommendation or price follows from feature compatibility alone.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing different internal resolutions: Match the measured render scale, not just the menu label.
- Mixing feature generations: “FSR,” “DLSS” or “XeSS” without a version number can hide major algorithm changes.
- Counting generated frames as simulation: Keep direct and displayed rates in separate columns.
- Judging from a still screenshot: Add motion tests for disocclusion, foliage, particles and text.
- Ignoring game integration: Poor motion vectors or an outdated SDK can dominate the result.
- Assuming suite-wide compatibility: Verify each feature on the exact GPU, driver and game build.
- Using a vendor’s headline multiplier as a benchmark: Preserve the original game, resolution, settings and hardware context.
- Turning on every feature at once: Test reconstruction first, then generation and latency options separately so you can tell which change affects the image, speed or feel.
Bottom line: which should you use?
Choose the feature that is supported by your game and GPU, then select the mode that remains stable at your target resolution. There is no established universal DLSS-versus-FSR-versus-XeSS winner from matched conditions. Compare temporal stability and artifacts in motion, measure directly rendered performance, and consider latency before trusting a generated-frame counter. Recheck support pages when a game or driver updates because feature names, versions and hardware eligibility continue to change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better, DLSS or FSR?
Neither is best in every game or on every GPU. Compare the same game, output resolution and quality target, then inspect detail and stability in motion. Also check whether your GPU supports the specific FSR or DLSS feature the game offers.
Is XeSS better than DLSS?
There is no universal winner established by a matched three-way test. Results depend on the game integration, feature version, GPU, resolution and mode. Compare the exact options available on your system, including image stability and performance.
Does frame generation increase input lag?
A higher displayed frame rate does not mean the game is simulating input and updating the world at that same rate. Responsiveness depends on the directly rendered baseline, latency features and frame pacing, so assess latency with generation enabled rather than relying on the frame counter.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does upscaling look different in motion?
Temporal reconstruction uses information from earlier frames. Camera movement, newly revealed scenery, foliage, particles and transparency can expose ghosting, shimmer or instability that a still image hides. Compare repeatable moving footage as well as screenshots.
Does FSR work on Nvidia cards?
Some FSR components are designed for cross-vendor hardware and may be available on Nvidia GPUs, but support varies by FSR revision and game. Check the exact feature requirement in the game and AMD’s current support information; do not assume every ML-based or frame-generation feature is compatible.
What graphics cards support DLSS?
DLSS support varies by feature and GPU generation. NVIDIA identifies GeForce RTX 50 Series for Multi Frame Generation and RTX PRO Blackwell products for its current multi-frame capability, while other DLSS features have their own eligibility. Verify your exact card and the game’s implementation.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal winner: choose the mode your game and GPU support, compare it at your target resolution, and judge motion, directly rendered performance and responsiveness separately.
