NVIDIA’s DLSS Frame Generation Model Upgrade is available to GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 50 owners when Frame Generation is enabled in a supported game. NVIDIA says the newer model uses less video memory and can increase frame rates, but its documentation does not establish a universal FPS gain or prove that any visual-quality trade-off is minor. You can enable the override in NVIDIA App’s program settings; game support and the available model options determine what you will see.
What the Frame Generation Model Upgrade does
Frame Generation creates additional frames between traditionally rendered frames. NVIDIA’s “DLSS Frame Generation Model Upgrade” changes the model used for that feature; it is not the same thing as increasing the number of generated frames through Multi Frame Generation.
NVIDIA says the upgraded model is available to GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 50 users when Frame Generation is on in-game. The company says it uses less video memory and can increase frame rates, but does not give a general percentage gain for this model upgrade. Those are NVIDIA’s stated benefits, not an independently established result across games or systems. NVIDIA’s DLSS override support instructions were updated February 3, 2025.

These features are related but not interchangeable. In particular, the RTX 40/50 model override should not be confused with RTX 50-only frame multiplication options described in NVIDIA’s March 31, 2026 announcement.

| Feature | GPU eligibility stated by NVIDIA | What it changes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLSS Frame Generation Model Upgrade | GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 50 | Uses the latest Frame Generation model when in-game Frame Generation is on. | NVIDIA says it uses less video memory and can increase frame rates; no general gain figure is stated. NVIDIA support |
| DLSS 4.5 Enhanced Frame Generation model | GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 50, in selected supported games | Uses additional game-engine data to improve the quality and clarity of minimaps, interface elements, and other game-interface details. | NVIDIA’s March 31, 2026 announcement directs users of supported titles to select “Preset B.” Check the current game support list. NVIDIA GeForce announcement |
| Dynamic Multi Frame Generation | GeForce RTX 50 Series | Adjusts the frame-generation multiplier toward a user-selected target or the display’s refresh rate. | NVIDIA says Dynamic mode is currently incompatible with frame-rate limiters and V-Sync. These limits concern Dynamic MFG, not automatically the RTX 40/50 model upgrade. NVIDIA GeForce announcement |
| 6X Multi Frame Generation | GeForce RTX 50 Series | Generates five additional frames for each traditionally rendered frame. | NVIDIA claims moving from 4X to 6X raises 4K frame rates by up to 35% in path-traced titles on RTX 50 Series. This is a vendor claim about 6X MFG, not a test of the RTX 40/50 model upgrade. NVIDIA GeForce announcement |
NVIDIA describes DLSS as a set of separate neural-rendering technologies powered by RTX Tensor Cores, including Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA. The components have different functions and compatibility; enabling one does not imply that the others are active. NVIDIA’s DLSS developer page was last updated in September 2026.
How to enable the RTX 40/50 model override in NVIDIA App
NVIDIA’s support instructions require you to turn on Frame Generation in the game first, then apply the override to that game’s program settings.

- Open the game’s graphics or DLSS settings and enable Frame Generation. The game must support the feature.
- Exit the game to the desktop.
- Open NVIDIA App and go to Graphics > Program settings.
- Select the game, then find DLSS Override – Model Presets.
- Under Frame Generation, choose Latest, then apply the change.
- Reopen the game and check that Frame Generation remains enabled.
The support page lists Game Ready Driver 572.16 and NVIDIA App 11.0.2.312 as minimum versions for DLSS 4 overrides. These are historical minimums and may have been superseded; check NVIDIA App and driver updates if the setting is missing. To undo the override, return to the same setting and choose Use the 3D application setting. NVIDIA’s support page has the override procedure.
For the enhanced model in supported DLSS 4.5 games
NVIDIA’s March 31, 2026 instructions for the enhanced Frame Generation model in selected games say to choose Preset B in the Frame Generation dropdown. That is distinct from the support page’s Latest override instruction. Use the option NVIDIA specifies for the title and feature you are configuring rather than treating these labels as synonyms. Game availability can change, so consult NVIDIA’s current supported-game information. NVIDIA GeForce announcement

What is known about FPS and image quality
For the RTX 40/50 Model Upgrade, NVIDIA’s support documentation says the model uses less video memory and can increase frame rates. It does not quantify the typical FPS increase or establish how performance changes in a particular game, resolution, or system. Actual results therefore should not be inferred from the 35% figure NVIDIA gives for a different feature: 6X Multi Frame Generation in path-traced 4K titles on RTX 50 Series.
NVIDIA describes the DLSS 4.5 enhanced model as improving minimap and other interface-element quality and clarity in selected supported titles. That is a vendor-described benefit, not evidence that every scene improves. The official material cited here does not establish a general “minor trade-off” in image quality, and it does not provide an independent, repeatable comparison of artifacts or visual fidelity across games. The right assessment depends on the title and scene; inspect fast motion and interface details in the games you play rather than assuming a universal result.

Generated frames also should not be treated as equivalent to traditionally rendered frames for input responsiveness. NVIDIA says its 6X mode can generate frames with minimal impact to responsiveness when combined with Reflex, but that statement is about 6X MFG and is NVIDIA’s claim; it does not establish the same outcome for every Frame Generation mode or setup. Quick Recap
What to check if the option is missing
- Confirm GPU eligibility. The Model Upgrade is for GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 50 users; the cited Dynamic and 6X Multi Frame Generation features are identified with RTX 50 Series.
- Enable Frame Generation in the game first. NVIDIA’s override procedure starts with the in-game setting turned on.
- Apply the override to the right program. In NVIDIA App, verify that you selected the game under Graphics > Program settings.
- Check driver and app versions. NVIDIA’s documented minimums for DLSS 4 overrides are Game Ready Driver 572.16 and NVIDIA App 11.0.2.312; newer versions may be available.
- Check title-specific support and model choice. The enhanced DLSS 4.5 model is game-dependent and uses “Preset B” in NVIDIA’s March 2026 directions, whereas the support-page override uses “Latest.”
