Use nvidia-smi for a quick local check of GPU and driver status; choose NVIDIA Data Center GPU Manager (DCGM) for ongoing telemetry, health monitoring, diagnostics, administration, or integration with other systems. They are not direct substitutes: DCGM provides a broader host-level framework, and nvidia-smi remains a convenient first stop. For Prometheus-based fleet monitoring, DCGM Exporter can expose selected DCGM metrics.
What is the difference between DCGM and nvidia-smi?
nvidia-smi is NVIDIA’s driver-provided command-line utility for inspecting a GPU from a shell. It is useful for a quick status check and for confirming that the driver discovers the device. The fields and options available can depend on the GPU and driver, so consult the installed utility’s help or reference when you need a particular field or flag. NVIDIA also uses nvidia-smi in its DCGM getting-started guidance for checking driver and CUDA user-mode driver versions.
DCGM is a broader host-level library and agent for data-center GPU monitoring and management. It supports telemetry collection, health monitoring, diagnostics, configuration and policy oversight, accounting and process statistics, and NVSwitch monitoring. Its host engine can run as a standalone process, or its library can be embedded in another agent. NVIDIA describes DCGM as providing “continuous GPU telemetry at very low performance overheads”; that is a qualitative description, not a numeric overhead result.
These tools work at different operational layers. A shell command is often enough to inspect a device; DCGM supplies shared collection and management capabilities for ongoing operations. You can use both: check discovery with nvidia-smi, then use DCGM where the operational requirements call for it.

When should you use nvidia-smi?
Start with nvidia-smi when you are logged into a machine and need to check whether its NVIDIA driver can discover a GPU or inspect the device at that moment. It is a practical first troubleshooting step, including before investigating an exporter that cannot see a device. NVIDIA’s DCGM Exporter installation guide likewise recommends checking GPU discovery with the utility.
Do not assume a particular set of fields, flags, or behavior applies to every machine: available output can vary with GPU and driver. Use the help and reference for the version installed on the host when exact command syntax or supported fields matter. Running nvidia-smi does not itself require installing DCGM.

When is DCGM worth deploying?
Use DCGM when a single momentary inspection is not enough and you need a persistent operational view or management layer. Its host engine and retained field watches support ongoing collection, while its APIs provide a programmatic route for integration. The dcgmi command-line interface talks to the host engine, but NVIDIA says it is not intended for scripting; for automation, use supported APIs or an appropriate integration rather than treating the CLI as a stable scripting interface.

- Health monitoring: evaluates retained field samples and can flag known subsystem conditions as a workload runs. It is passive monitoring, not a stress test and not proof by itself that a GPU can execute a particular workload.
- Diagnostics: runs dedicated tests when you need active investigation or a readiness check. Use this when passive telemetry does not answer whether the device passes the test you require.

How does DCGM Exporter fit with Prometheus?
DCGM Exporter is the collection and export layer for Prometheus-based monitoring: it makes selected DCGM fields available at a scrape endpoint. It is not another name for nvidia-smi, nor does deploying it make the distinction between the command-line utility and DCGM disappear.

NVIDIA documents running the exporter as a package-managed service, a container, or a Kubernetes DaemonSet. The setup needs access to the NVIDIA driver/NVML; a container deployment also requires NVIDIA Container Toolkit, and the Prometheus server must be able to reach the exporter endpoint. What compatibility checks matter before deployment?
DCGM support depends on the GPU generation and capabilities, operating system, driver, CUDA user-mode driver, and deployment environment. Before rolling it out to a host or fleet, verify the exact combination against NVIDIA’s current platform, dependency, and installation requirements. Containerized exporter deployments add the NVIDIA Container Toolkit and endpoint-reachability requirements described above. Avoid assuming a single installation recipe applies across different systems.
