Use the NVIDIA App if you are choosing today. NVIDIA’s newer unified app includes the core GeForce Experience workflows—drivers, game optimization, and the in-game overlay—while adding broader graphics controls, statistics, rollback, GPU monitoring, tuning, and newer RTX features. Keep GeForce Experience only temporarily if you depend on a legacy workflow that you have verified is not yet available in the App. NVIDIA is directing remaining users to upgrade and says critical GeForce Experience web servers will be switched off “in the near future,” although it has not published a shutdown date.

NVIDIA App vs GeForce Experience: the short answer

For a GeForce gaming PC, the NVIDIA App is the forward-looking choice. It became an official release on November 12, 2024, combining many of the most-used functions from GeForce Experience (GFE) and RTX Experience in one application. NVIDIA’s current migration guidance tells users of older GFE versions to move to the App because critical GFE web servers are planned for retirement.

That recommendation does not mean every GFE feature has an identical replacement on every computer. Feature availability can vary with your GPU generation, graphics driver, game, operating system, and installed App version. Before switching, check any workflow you rely on—particularly a capture format, overlay tool, Control Panel setting, or game-specific function.

There is also no evidence here that the App increases in-game frame rates compared with GFE. NVIDIA advertises a faster installation and a more responsive interface, and describes ShadowPlay capture as having minimal performance impact, but those statements are not a controlled App-versus-GFE gaming benchmark.

What each application is designed to do

GeForce Experience

GeForce Experience was NVIDIA’s long-running companion for GeForce graphics cards. Its documented core functions included Game Ready Driver access, automatic game-setting recommendations, and ShadowPlay recording and capture. GFE release notes also covered overlay behavior, game minimization fixes, and Reflex Analyzer display fixes, showing that overlay behavior could change between versions and setups.

The GFE 3.26 notes provide a historical reference rather than proof of the final or currently supported build. That release documented 8K 60-fps HDR recording for RTX 40-series graphics cards along with the driver, optimization, and ShadowPlay functions many users associate with GFE.

NVIDIA App

The NVIDIA App is a unified control center for NVIDIA graphics features. Its launch design grouped capabilities into several areas:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Home: a central entry point and discovery area for NVIDIA applications and content.
  • Drivers: driver release information, installation, and rollback controls.
  • Graphics: Optimal Playable Settings recommendations plus relevant graphics options that previously required separate NVIDIA interfaces.
  • Overlay: capture, screenshots, a gallery, and performance statistics while a game is running.
  • System: display and video controls, GPU monitoring, and supported tuning functions.

The App does not automatically make every NVIDIA Control Panel option disappear. NVIDIA’s launch description explicitly noted that some Control Panel settings remained outside the App, so keep Control Panel installed when a setting you need has not migrated.

Area GeForce Experience NVIDIA App What to check
Ongoing support Legacy application; NVIDIA is encouraging remaining users to upgrade. Current unified application with continuing release highlights. Confirm the installed App version and current NVIDIA support notices.
Driver installation Game Ready Driver delivery was a documented GFE function. Drivers section provides release details and installation. Use the driver package appropriate for your GPU and operating system.
Driver rollback Availability depended on the GFE release and driver workflow. Rollback is documented in App release highlights. Rollback options can depend on the installed driver and App build.
Game optimization Game-setting recommendations were a central GFE feature. Includes Optimal Playable Settings and per-game graphics controls. Recommendations are not guarantees of a particular frame rate.
Global graphics settings Often required a separate Control Panel workflow. Graphics section exposes relevant controls, but not every Control Panel setting. Open NVIDIA Control Panel for options not present in the App.
Overlay and capture ShadowPlay overlay, recording, and screenshots. Redesigned overlay with capture, gallery, screenshots, and statistics. Check hotkeys, storage location, codec, resolution, and game support.
Performance statistics More limited and release-dependent overlay information. Statistics, 1% low FPS reporting, and GPU monitoring are documented in release highlights. Metrics shown by the overlay are monitoring data, not a certified benchmark.
GPU tuning Not the focus of the historical GFE workflow. Supported builds include one-click automatic tuning and monitoring. Automatic tuning is GPU-, driver-, temperature-, and power-limit dependent.
RTX-specific functions Support varied by GFE version and GPU generation. Adds or exposes newer RTX functions where hardware and software support them. Verify the exact GPU, driver, game, and App-version requirement.
Login Account use was commonly associated with GFE services. Login is optional for normal use; it is required when redeeming bundles or rewards. Do not sign in unless you need a reward or account-linked function.

Drivers: installation, details, and rollback

Both applications can put Game Ready Drivers within reach, but the App presents the process in a dedicated Drivers section. There you can read release details before installing and, on supported configurations, roll back to an earlier driver.

  1. Open NVIDIA App and select Drivers.
  2. Review the listed driver release notes and confirm that the package matches your GPU and operating system.
  3. Choose the installation action and allow the installer to complete. Close games and GPU-intensive applications first.
  4. Restart a game or Windows if the installer requests it, then verify the driver version in the Drivers section or Windows device information.
  5. If a new driver causes a reproducible problem and the rollback control is available, return to Drivers, select the prior package, and follow the rollback prompt. If rollback is not offered, install the required earlier driver manually from NVIDIA’s official driver download process.

A rollback is a recovery tool, not a guarantee that every previous driver remains available indefinitely. Record the version that worked before changing it, and test the affected game after installation.

Game optimization and graphics controls

Optimal Playable Settings

The App can recommend settings for supported games through Graphics and Optimal Playable Settings. NVIDIA said its launch article covered more than 1,200 titles at that time; that was a dated vendor count, not a promise about current coverage.

  1. Open Graphics in the App.
  2. Select the detected game from the list.
  3. Review the recommended profile, including resolution, quality, and feature choices.
  4. Apply the profile only after checking whether you prefer higher image quality, lower latency, or a particular frame-rate target.
  5. Launch the game and adjust individual settings in the game if the recommendation does not fit your monitor or play style.

Optimal settings are starting points. They cannot account perfectly for a CPU bottleneck, a heavily modded installation, a laptop’s power mode, thermal throttling, or a personal preference for visual quality over latency.

Per-game and global settings

The App brings selected graphics controls into one place and can distinguish per-game settings from broader defaults. Not every NVIDIA Control Panel option was migrated at launch. When a setting is missing, open NVIDIA Control Panel rather than assuming the App has removed it or that the setting is unsupported.

Changing a global setting can affect every game, while a per-game profile limits the change to one executable. Use a per-game profile for experiments such as a special frame limiter or latency option; reserve global changes for a policy you want across the system.

Overlay, recording, screenshots, and statistics

Using the redesigned overlay

The App’s overlay combines capture, a gallery, and statistics. The exact hotkey and available panels depend on the installed build and your configuration. Open the App’s settings to confirm the overlay shortcut before launching a game, then use the shortcut in-game to verify that the panel appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Recording: start and stop manual capture, or configure supported instant-replay behavior.
  • Screenshots: save still images while the overlay is active.
  • Gallery: review captured files and identify their storage location.
  • Statistics: display performance information such as frame rate and, in documented releases, 1% low FPS.

Save recordings to a drive with sufficient free space. High-resolution HDR video grows quickly, and recording to a nearly full system drive can cause failed captures or interfere with game updates.

Capture ceilings and what they mean

NVIDIA’s current product description lists manual ShadowPlay capture up to 8K HDR at 30 frames per second or 4K HDR at 120 frames per second. Those are feature ceilings for supported configurations, not evidence that the App renders games faster than GFE. Your GPU encoder, game, display mode, storage speed, codec, and driver can reduce the practical options.

NVIDIA describes recording as having “minimal impact to performance.” Treat that as a vendor characterization of capture overhead. It does not establish equal overhead on every GPU or a lower overhead than GFE.

RTX-only and generation-dependent features

Some of the App’s headline functions are not universal GeForce features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Smooth Motion

NVIDIA specifies Smooth Motion for RTX 50-series and RTX 40-series GPUs. A compatible card is necessary but not sufficient: the game, driver, display mode, and App version also have to support the feature. If Smooth Motion is absent, that can be an eligibility issue rather than an installation error.

AV1 recording

AV1 recording is available to RTX 40-series owners according to NVIDIA’s product information. Check the codec choices in the App after selecting your capture settings. An RTX card from an earlier generation should not be assumed to expose AV1 simply because the App is installed.

DLSS model overrides and other additions

Release highlights document DLSS model overrides, G-SYNC and display settings, video controls, GPU monitoring, automatic tuning, and other additions. These features arrive in specific App builds and can change over time. The indexed release-highlights page surfaced App 11.0.9 as a recent version, but the live release page and your installed build are the authority for current availability.

When troubleshooting an RTX feature, check all four dependencies: the GPU generation, the installed graphics driver, the game’s support, and the App version. Updating only the App will not add hardware capabilities that the GPU lacks.

Performance: what is actually established

NVIDIA’s installation and interface claims

In its November 12, 2024 launch announcement, NVIDIA said the App “installs in half the time” compared with GeForce Experience and offers a UI that is “50% more responsive.” Those figures are NVIDIA’s own claims. The announcement does not provide the test system, sample size, timing method, or independent reproduction, so they should not be treated as universal measurements.

They describe installation duration and interface responsiveness, not game rendering performance. A faster setup screen does not imply higher FPS once a game is running.

No controlled App-versus-GFE FPS result

The available evidence does not include a controlled head-to-head test of frame rate, frame-time consistency, CPU use, RAM use, startup load, or background-process overhead between the two applications. Do not choose the App expecting a guaranteed FPS increase, and do not describe GFE as slower in games without a reproducible test on the same hardware and driver.

Game performance is primarily shaped by the GPU, CPU, driver, game version, graphics settings, resolution, thermals, and background software. The companion application can affect capture and overlay overhead, but the size and direction of that effect depend on the configuration.

Usability, login, and account requirements

NVIDIA says App login is optional for ordinary use. You can access the main application without signing in; an account is needed when redeeming a bundle, reward, or similar account-linked offer. This makes the App suitable for users who want driver and graphics controls without adding another mandatory sign-in.

The newer layout is organized by function rather than by the older GFE workflow. Users who only update drivers may spend less time in the App than users who tune games, inspect statistics, or manage captures. If a panel is missing, first confirm that the relevant feature is supported on the GPU and that the App is current.

How to move from GeForce Experience to NVIDIA App

Before installing

  • Write down your GFE capture hotkeys, recording resolution, frame rate, codec, microphone mix, and storage folder.
  • Note any game profiles or global settings that you changed, especially settings you normally manage in Control Panel.
  • Check whether a feature you depend on is tied to a particular GPU generation or GFE release.
  • Make sure Windows has enough free space for the installer and temporary driver files.

Install the App

NVIDIA’s upgrade page says some remaining GFE versions cannot update automatically. In that case, download the App manually from NVIDIA or install it through a current Game Ready Driver package. The exact installer screens can change, so follow the prompts for your Windows build and graphics hardware.

  1. Close games, launchers, capture tools, and GPU-tuning utilities.
  2. Run the NVIDIA App installer or start the installation from a supported Game Ready Driver package.
  3. Allow the installer to complete, then restart Windows if requested.
  4. Open the App and choose whether to sign in. Skip login unless you need a reward or another account-linked function.
  5. Open Drivers and confirm the installed driver; then open Graphics to check that your games and profiles were detected.
  6. Open the overlay in a noncompetitive test game and verify capture, microphone, screenshot, and statistics behavior.

Do not uninstall NVIDIA Control Panel merely because the App is installed. Keep it available for settings that are not yet exposed in the App.

If the automatic upgrade is unavailable

Automatic migration is not guaranteed for every GFE version. Use the manual installer or a Game Ready Driver installation path recommended by NVIDIA. If the App does not detect a game, confirm that the game is installed in a supported location, rescan from the App’s settings if that control is present, and verify that the game executable has not been renamed or replaced by a launcher update.

What NVIDIA’s server warning means

NVIDIA states that it will switch off critical GeForce Experience web servers “in the near future” and asks users to upgrade to the NVIDIA App. The cited guidance does not give a calendar date. Therefore, GFE should be treated as a transition product, but it is inaccurate to claim that every GFE installation has already stopped working.

Server-dependent functions may fail before the local overlay or an installed driver stops launching. If GFE cannot retrieve driver information, game recommendations, or account-linked data, move to the App rather than repeatedly reinstalling the old client.

Which app should you use?

Your situation Best choice Reason
New NVIDIA software setup NVIDIA App It is the current unified application and receives ongoing feature updates.
Existing GFE user with no unusual workflow NVIDIA App The shared driver, optimization, and overlay functions are available in the newer design.
You need RTX 40/50-generation features NVIDIA App, after checking requirements Newer RTX functions and version-specific controls are documented in App releases.
You rely on a legacy GFE behavior Test the App before removing GFE Some settings and workflows may still require Control Panel or may differ by build.
You want higher game FPS Neither app based on this evidence No controlled comparison establishes an App-versus-GFE FPS advantage.
You do not want to sign in NVIDIA App without login Login is optional unless you redeem a reward or use an account-linked function.

Troubleshooting common migration problems

The overlay does not appear

  • Confirm the overlay is enabled in App settings and that its keyboard shortcut is not claimed by another program.
  • Restart the game after changing overlay settings.
  • Test a supported game in windowed, borderless, and exclusive full-screen modes if one mode blocks the overlay.
  • Update the graphics driver and App, then check release notes for overlay fixes.

Recording fails or produces the wrong quality

  • Check free disk space and the selected capture folder.
  • Verify resolution, HDR, frame rate, codec, and microphone settings in the overlay.
  • Use a capture mode your GPU supports; AV1, for example, is documented for RTX 40-series owners.
  • Reduce capture resolution or frame rate if the game becomes unstable or the encoder cannot sustain the selected mode.

A graphics option is missing

Open NVIDIA Control Panel and compare its available options with the App’s Graphics section. NVIDIA did not claim that every Control Panel function had moved into the App. Also check whether the option is restricted by GPU generation, driver branch, game profile, or operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A driver update causes a problem

Reproduce the issue once with overlays and capture disabled, then use the App’s rollback control if it is available for your installation. Record the failing driver version and the working version. If the App cannot offer a rollback, install the known-good driver through NVIDIA’s manual driver process and retest before changing other variables.

Bottom line for most GeForce owners

The NVIDIA App is the sensible default in 2026: it is NVIDIA’s current unified client, carries forward the functions most people used in GeForce Experience, and is the destination NVIDIA identifies as GFE web services are phased out. Install it without expecting a magic FPS increase, keep NVIDIA Control Panel for settings that have not migrated, and verify GPU-, driver-, game-, and version-specific requirements before relying on a particular RTX or capture feature.
