There is no single best NVIDIA App configuration for every GeForce PC. Start with the app’s personalized game recommendations, then tune settings for your GPU, CPU, display, game, and goal—whether that is sharper visuals, steadier frame rates, lower latency, or better recordings. This guide explains where to make those choices and what to check when a feature is unavailable.
What are the best NVIDIA settings for gaming?
Use NVIDIA App’s Optimal Settings as a starting point, not as a universal performance result. NVIDIA says its recommendations are personalized using your system’s GPU, CPU, and display. They can help you get a sensible initial configuration, but they cannot account for every preference, game update, or performance bottleneck.
Start with the driver and the game recommendation
- Open NVIDIA App and check Drivers for an available Game Ready or Studio driver. NVIDIA describes Game Ready drivers as developed with game developers and tested for release-day gaming; that is NVIDIA’s characterization, not an independent comparison of drivers.
- Open Graphics, select the game, and review or apply its recommended settings. Menu labels and available controls can change with app versions.
- Launch the game and check its own graphics options. Adjust toward a specific goal rather than assuming the recommendation is ideal for your setup.
Choose a goal before changing settings
| Priority | What to favor | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Image quality | Higher-quality in-game settings and, where supported, DLSS Quality or DLAA | Whether your GPU can maintain the frame rate you want |
| Higher frame rate | Lower demanding graphics settings and a more performance-oriented DLSS mode where supported | Reduced image detail or softness, and whether the game is limited by the CPU instead |
| Lower latency | Settings and frame rates appropriate to your game and display | Visual smoothness and frame-generation behavior; generated frames do not guarantee lower latency |
| Gameplay capture | Recording resolution, frame rate, and quality suited to your editing or sharing needs | File size, available storage, hardware support, and the current overlay’s options |
Change a small number of settings at a time and evaluate them in the game and scenes you actually play. A game can be limited by the GPU, CPU, or its own engine behavior, so lowering a graphics setting may not help if that setting is not the bottleneck.
Should I use DLSS Quality or Performance?
Choose based on the balance you want between image quality and frame rate, then compare the available modes in the game. Quality-oriented modes generally prioritize a cleaner image; performance-oriented modes prioritize frame rate and can involve a larger image-quality trade-off. The result depends on the game, display resolution, GPU, and implementation. There is no mode that is best for every title.

Use the game’s own DLSS controls first
If a game offers DLSS, begin with its in-game options and check the resulting image and performance. NVIDIA App’s driver-level DLSS overrides are for compatible games; they do not make DLSS available in every title. NVIDIA documents overrides including Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series when in-game Frame Generation is enabled, a frame-generation model upgrade for RTX 50 and 40 Series when Frame Generation is enabled, and transformer-model upgrades for Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA on supported GeForce RTX hardware.
Apply an override globally or per game
In NVIDIA App, open Graphics and review the global settings for options that apply to compatible titles. Use the game’s entry and its program-specific settings when you want control over an individual title. NVIDIA also lists DLAA, Ultra Performance, and custom input-resolution options where supported. Availability depends on the game, GPU, driver, and current app version; a visible control does not establish that every title can use it.

NVIDIA’s August 2026 Gamescom update described DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction options. Its instructions included enabling Early Access through Settings > About, then opening Graphics > [supported game] > Driver Settings > DLSS Override – Model Presets. Because those instructions describe an Early Access route and app menus can change, check the current release notes and the selected game’s available controls rather than assuming this path is present in every release.
When Smooth Motion may be relevant
NVIDIA describes Smooth Motion as a driver-based AI feature that infers an additional frame between rendered frames for supported titles that do not support DLSS Frame Generation. NVIDIA’s August 2026 update notes RTX 40 Series support alongside RTX 50 Series. The documented requirements include a compatible app and driver and a supported DirectX 11, DirectX 12, or Vulkan title. Check the current support information before relying on it, and judge the result in your own game: generated frames are not a guarantee of lower latency or a better experience in every title.

How do I enable G-SYNC?
G-SYNC matches a monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU’s frame rate. It requires a G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible display and appropriate GPU and software support. NVIDIA describes G-SYNC Compatible displays as variable-refresh-rate displays it has validated; a monitor having some form of VRR does not by itself establish that it is in that category.
Use NVIDIA Control Panel as the documented setup route
- Connect the intended display, enable it in Windows, and set it as the primary display if that is the screen you want to configure.
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel and go to Display > Set up G-SYNC.
- Enable G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible for the display.
- Choose fullscreen-only behavior, or windowed and fullscreen behavior if you want G-SYNC to apply to windowed applications as well.
- Select the setting for the intended display, then go to Manage 3D Settings and set Monitor Technology to G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible, as applicable.
NVIDIA App has gained display and G-SYNC controls over time, so the exact app interface can vary. The Control Panel path above is NVIDIA’s documented fallback. If windowed G-SYNC causes problems, NVIDIA identifies fullscreen-only as an appropriate option. Confirm that your display and GPU meet NVIDIA’s current compatibility requirements; published requirements pages can lag product changes.

How do I improve older games with NVIDIA settings?
Older games may expose legacy driver controls for features such as anisotropic filtering, antialiasing, texture filtering, and PhysX. NVIDIA says these options can be useful for some older games, while noting that most modern games do not need them.
Recommended Free Tools
Find the legacy controls
- Open NVIDIA App and select Graphics.
- Select the older game, open its Driver Settings, and scroll to Show Legacy Settings.
- Review the controls available for that game. NVIDIA lists Anisotropic Filtering and Texture Filtering, Background Application Max Frame Rate, FXAA, multisample, supersample and transparency antialiasing, NVIDIA Multi-Frame Sampled Antialiasing, and PhysX GPU settings.
There is no universal value for these settings in the available NVIDIA guidance. Change one per-game option at a time, then check for visual artifacts, performance changes, or compatibility problems. If a change causes trouble, restore the previous value before testing another option.

How do I record gameplay with ShadowPlay?
NVIDIA App includes an overlay with gameplay capture, performance statistics, and Freestyle filters. NVIDIA describes Instant Replay as a way to save the last 30 seconds of gameplay. Use it when you want to preserve an unexpected moment; use manual recording when you want to choose when a recording starts and stops.
Choose a capture mode and quality
Open the NVIDIA overlay and check the capture controls available on your system. Turn on Instant Replay if you want a rolling capture you can save after an event, or start a manual recording for a longer session. The exact controls and options can vary by app version, game, hardware, and configuration.
NVIDIA lists manual capture capabilities of up to 8K HDR at 30 fps or 4K HDR at 120 fps, and AV1 recording for RTX 40 Series GPU owners. These are NVIDIA-published capabilities, not independent performance measurements, and the available choices can depend on hardware, driver, game, and configuration. Higher resolution, frame rate, and quality can require more storage. Check the current overlay and make a short recording to confirm that your chosen settings work for your setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKnow when recording may be restricted
Some DRM-protected content can prevent ShadowPlay video recording. NVIDIA noted this restriction in its 2024 app update. It is a content limitation, not necessarily a problem that a capture-setting change can resolve.
Why is an NVIDIA App setting missing or unavailable?
App settings depend on the installed app and driver, the GPU, the selected game, and feature support. A control may also appear only for compatible hardware or a supported title.
Quick Recap
- Check the installed NVIDIA App and driver versions, then review current release notes for changes to menus or feature eligibility.
- For DLSS, Frame Generation, Smooth Motion, or an override, confirm that the GPU and game support the specific feature.
- For G-SYNC, check the exact display model against NVIDIA’s current compatibility information and verify that it is enabled and connected as intended.
- For capture, review the options shown in the overlay and confirm that the game permits recording and that storage is available.
- For an older game, test legacy settings one at a time and revert any option that causes artifacts or instability.
