At the October 6, 2026 close, a third-party comparison listed NVIDIA at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 19.78 and AMD at 58.48. That is a striking valuation gap, but it does not establish that NVIDIA is “far safer.” A forward P/E uses forecast earnings, and safety can mean different things: less valuation risk, more predictable earnings, lower business risk, or lower share-price volatility. The available figures favor NVIDIA on the first measure only; they do not settle the others.
What the valuation split shows
Stock Analysis figures summarized by MobileStalk showed this market snapshot at the October 6, 2026 close; the comparison was updated October 7. These are third-party market figures and estimates, not company guidance.
| Metric | NVIDIA | AMD |
|---|---|---|
| Share price | $239.24 | $649.42 |
| Market capitalization | $5.78 trillion | $1.06 trillion |
| Trailing P/E | 30.25 | 165.76 |
| Forward P/E | 19.78 | 58.48 |
The forward P/E is the most direct measure behind the valuation split: on that snapshot, investors paid less per dollar of forecast earnings for NVIDIA than for AMD. The share prices themselves do not show which stock is cheaper because each company has a different number of shares outstanding.

A forward P/E divides a share price by forecast earnings, so the result depends on the estimate set, provider and timing; it is not a guarantee of future earnings. The ratio can change when the share price moves or forecasts are revised. A lower multiple alone does not prove NVIDIA was underpriced or AMD overpriced.

How the companies’ reported results compare
The recent quarterly figures show NVIDIA operating at a much larger scale in the periods cited. They also show growth at both companies, but percentages and margins should be read alongside revenue size, fiscal period and accounting basis.
| Reported result | NVIDIA | AMD |
|---|---|---|
| Quarter and announcement date | Fiscal Q2 2027; announced August 26, 2026 | Q2 2026; announced August 4, 2026 |
| Revenue | $96.2 billion; up 106% year over year and 18% sequentially | $11.5 billion |
| Data Center revenue | $89.0 billion; up 117% year over year | CEO said Data Center revenue more than doubled year over year; the cited release summary does not give the segment’s dollar amount |
| GAAP gross margin | 75.0% | 54% |
| GAAP diluted EPS | $2.46 | $1.38 |
NVIDIA’s quarter ended July 26, 2026. Its fiscal 2026 full-year revenue was $215.9 billion, up 65%; that fiscal year ended January 25, 2026. Those results establish a large current earnings and revenue base, but they do not establish that future growth will continue at the same rate. NVIDIA’s fiscal Q2 2027 results report GAAP and non-GAAP figures separately.

AMD also reported non-GAAP Q2 2026 results: gross margin of 56%, operating income of $3.1 billion, net income of $2.8 billion and diluted EPS of $1.66. Those figures are a separate accounting basis and should not be mixed with NVIDIA’s GAAP figures in the table. AMD’s release also reported GAAP operating income of $2.0 billion and net income of $2.3 billion. AMD’s Q2 2026 results provides the company’s reported figures.
What “safer” can—and cannot—mean
Lower valuation-multiple risk
NVIDIA’s lower forward P/E in the dated snapshot means less of its price, relative to the provider’s earnings forecast, rests on a high multiple than AMD’s price does. If investor expectations or earnings estimates fall, a stock valued more richly against forecasts may face greater multiple-compression risk. This is a way to describe one exposure, not a prediction of which share price will fall more.

Business scale and earnings durability
NVIDIA’s cited revenue and Data Center figures are substantially larger than AMD’s reported total revenue. Scale can matter when assessing a company’s ability to fund operations and absorb shocks, but it is not a stand-alone measure of durability. The figures do not provide a matched comparison of customer dependence, contract terms, cash flow, or the sensitivity of each company’s earnings to a downturn.
Execution and demand risk
Both valuations ultimately depend on future results. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang described AI demand this way: “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue.” That is management’s characterization of the market, not independent proof that demand or NVIDIA’s growth will persist. AMD CEO Lisa Su said the company delivered “an excellent quarter, with record revenue and profitability as Data Center revenue more than doubled year-over-year.” That is also management’s statement, not a guarantee about future performance.

AMD’s FY2025 filing identifies risks involving product demand, market growth and competition, customer concentration, international sales, financing, and the legal and regulatory environment for emerging technologies such as AI. The cited material does not provide an equivalent, matched risk ranking for NVIDIA, so these disclosures cannot support a definitive conclusion that one company has lower overall business risk. AMD’s FY2025 filing describes its risk factors; the company’s outlook and product plans are expectations, not achieved results.
How to use the comparison as an investor
- Match the valuation date and estimate source. Forward multiples are not fixed company characteristics. Confirm that both figures use the same date and a comparable estimate provider and forecast period before drawing a current comparison.
- Separate price risk from operating risk. A lower forward P/E may reduce exposure to a high valuation multiple, but it does not establish lower volatility, more dependable demand, or a smaller chance of disappointing results.
- Compare like with like. Use the same fiscal period and accounting basis. Do not compare one company’s GAAP margin with another’s non-GAAP margin, or treat growth percentages as equivalent when revenue scales differ.
- Test the expectations embedded in the price. Consider what earnings growth each valuation assumes and how each business might fare if demand, competition, or customer spending changes. A forecast multiple can rise sharply if expected earnings shrink, even when the share price is unchanged.
- Define your own meaning of safety. An investor concerned most about paying a high multiple may view NVIDIA’s snapshot more favorably. Someone focused on other risks needs a broader, matched analysis than these figures provide; a universal safer-stock verdict is not established.
These market figures are a dated snapshot, not live quotes. Subsequent share-price moves, earnings releases or estimate revisions can materially change the comparison.
