No single power source is best for every AI data center. The most credible plan is time-phased: add renewable generation and storage quickly, retain or contract existing nuclear where it is available, develop new firm clean resources for the 2030s, and use natural gas selectively when interconnection or clean-build schedules cannot meet the load date.

The right choice depends on the site’s required energization date, grid capacity, uptime service level, emissions target, fuel exposure and ability to pay for storage, transmission and backup capacity. A global average cannot answer a site-specific power-procurement decision.

What an AI data center actually needs from its power supply

AI facilities are large, concentrated and unusually sensitive to interruptions. Idaho National Laboratory wrote in 2024 that many data centers require as much as 99.999% uptime to avoid data damage and customer losses. That requirement changes the question from “Which generator has the lowest headline cost?” to “Which portfolio can deliver high-quality power continuously, recover from contingencies and still meet the project’s schedule and emissions commitments?”

Power quality includes voltage and frequency stability, not only annual energy. A site can buy enough renewable electricity over a year and still need firm capacity, storage, grid services or backup generation during a wind lull, nighttime period, transmission outage or extreme-weather event. Conversely, a gas or nuclear plant can provide firm output but remain unusable for a new site if the transmission connection, permitting or construction schedule is too slow.

The scale of the load is changing the decision

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that data centers consumed 415 TWh in 2024, about 1.5% of global electricity. Its 2025 outlook projects global data-center consumption at about 945 TWh in 2030. In the IEA’s base-case supply analysis, generation serving data centers rises from 460 TWh in 2024 to more than 1,000 TWh in 2030 and about 1,300 TWh in 2035. These are scenario projections, not guarantees, but they show why a procurement choice made for one campus can affect regional generation and transmission planning.

Local grid constraints can matter more than the technology label

The IEA estimates that about 20% of planned data-center projects could face delays from grid risks. In advanced economies, new transmission can take four to eight years. A project with a two-year construction schedule therefore cannot assume that a distant wind or nuclear project will be connected when the servers arrive. Interconnection queues, substation equipment, rights-of-way, water access, fuel logistics and local permitting should be screened before selecting a generation technology.

What the current electricity mix tells us

IEA estimates for 2025 describe electricity physically consumed by data centers, including power drawn from the local grid. They are not the same as a company’s contractual renewable-energy claims or certificates.

Source Global share of electricity physically consumed by data centers United States share
Renewables About 27% About 24%
Natural gas About 26% More than 40%
Nuclear About 15% About 20%
Coal About 30% About 15%

The mix is a description of current physical supply, not a recommendation. It also explains why the answer differs by geography: a U.S. site may already be connected to a gas-heavy grid, while another location may have substantial nuclear or renewable output but insufficient transmission capacity.

Renewables and storage: the fastest-build option, not a standalone guarantee of 24/7 supply

Solar and land-based wind can usually be deployed in modular increments, and battery storage can be added alongside them. The U.S. Department of Energy wrote in 2024 that solar, land-based wind, battery storage and energy efficiency are among the most rapidly scalable and cost-competitive ways to meet increased data-center electricity demand. In the IEA’s base case, renewables meet nearly half of additional data-center demand through 2030 and renewable generation serving data centers grows about 22% per year from 2024 to 2030.

The IEA describes half of global data-center demand growth as being met by renewables, supported by storage and the broader electricity grid. That wording matters: the renewable contribution is not assumed to come from an isolated solar-and-battery plant operating without a grid or other firming resource.

Can solar and batteries run a data center 24/7?

They can contribute to a 24/7 portfolio, but “solar plus batteries” is not automatically equivalent to firm power. The answer depends on the site’s weather profile, renewable diversity, storage energy capacity, recharge opportunities, transmission connection and allowed load flexibility. A battery can shift energy and provide fast response; it cannot eliminate a prolonged period of low renewable output unless the project also has enough stored energy, grid imports or firm generation.

  • On-site or contracted solar and wind sized for annual energy and local resource conditions.
  • Storage sized against the site’s ramping, outage and weather-risk requirements, rather than against an arbitrary percentage of annual consumption.
  • A dependable grid connection with sufficient transmission and substation capacity.
  • Demand flexibility where the service-level agreement permits workload shifting, batch scheduling or temporary power reduction.
  • A firm resource, such as existing nuclear or selectively contracted gas, for conditions the first four layers cannot cover.

Renewables’ advantages

  • Deployment speed: Projects can be added in stages, allowing capacity to track campus growth when land, equipment and interconnection are available.
  • Low operating emissions: Wind and solar produce no combustion emissions during generation. Lifecycle emissions still include manufacturing, construction and decommissioning.
  • Fuel-price insulation: The plants do not require a continuing fuel purchase, although financing, curtailment, transmission and replacement costs remain.
  • Portfolio flexibility: Geographic diversity, storage and demand response can reduce dependence on any single weather pattern or grid condition.

Renewables’ limits

  • Output varies with sunlight and wind, so energy production and firm capacity are different products.
  • Storage, transmission upgrades and interconnection can materially increase delivered cost and schedule risk.
  • Large projects may encounter land-use, wildlife, visual, water or local-permitting objections.
  • Corporate renewable contracts do not prove that every electron consumed by a data center was renewable at every hour; the physical grid mix and the contract should be reported separately.

Nuclear: firm, low-operational-emissions power when the schedule works

Nuclear plants provide continuous output independent of daily weather. INL’s 2024 analysis calls nuclear plants’ zero-emission baseload operation well suited to the energy needs of new data centers. “Zero-emission” in this context refers to operational generation; lifecycle accounting includes mining, construction, fuel preparation and decommissioning.

Existing nuclear is different from new nuclear

Preserving an operating nuclear plant, signing a long-term offtake agreement or locating near an existing nuclear station can provide firm electricity without waiting for an entirely new reactor project. The site still needs a deliverable transmission arrangement and must account for outage periods, market rules and the plant’s remaining operating life.

Historical U.S. Energy Information Administration data show nuclear capacity factors of 91.7% to 92.3% in the cited 2014–2017 table. Those figures are historical and should not be presented as current fleet-wide values without checking the latest EIA release.

Why new reactors cannot solve every immediate load

New nuclear projects require site selection, licensing, financing, construction, grid interconnection and specialized equipment. The IEA expects the first small modular reactors (SMRs) around 2030, but that is an outlook, not a guaranteed commercial-service date for a particular data-center project. An SMR should therefore be treated as a possible 2030s resource, not as a substitute for a connection needed in the next one or two years.

Nuclear’s advantages

  • Firm output: A reactor can supply power through nighttime and weather events without relying on renewable production.
  • Low operational carbon: Generation does not combust fuel at the plant, supporting decarbonization goals when lifecycle emissions are included transparently.
  • Small land footprint per unit of continuous output: The site requirements differ from those of a large, geographically dispersed renewable build, although nuclear facilities have stringent exclusion, safety and security requirements.
  • Potential long-term stability: Once operating, the plant is less exposed to daily fuel-price swings than a gas plant.

Nuclear’s limits

  • Licensing and construction schedules can exceed the time available for an AI campus that must energize soon.
  • Capital financing, construction risk, waste management, cooling-water requirements and emergency planning affect delivered economics.
  • Planned and unplanned outages still require replacement power or storage.
  • Local acceptance and regulatory conditions can determine whether a technically suitable site is buildable.

Natural gas: dispatchable insurance with emissions and fuel exposure

Gas turbines can ramp when demand rises or renewable output falls, which is why the IEA expects dispatchable sources led by natural gas to play a crucial role. The IEA projects gas and coal together will meet more than 40% of additional data-center demand through 2030. In the United States, gas already supplies more than 40% of the electricity physically consumed by data centers in the IEA’s estimate.

Why data centers use natural gas

Gas can be attractive when a site needs firm capacity before a major transmission project is complete, when nearby pipeline and generation infrastructure already exist, or when a developer needs a controllable complement to variable renewable contracts. On-site or nearby generation can also reduce dependence on a constrained interconnection, subject to air permits, fuel delivery and environmental rules.

Gas is not a free schedule shortcut

Gas-turbine lead times can still be several years. Turbines, transformers, switchgear, pipelines, substations and permits may all sit on the critical path. A gas plant also needs a dependable fuel supply and may face pipeline constraints during regional cold snaps or other peak events.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gas’s environmental and financial trade-offs

  • Combustion emissions: Burning gas produces carbon dioxide during operation.
  • Methane exposure: Emissions can occur during production, processing and transport, so a lifecycle assessment should not stop at the plant stack.
  • Fuel-price risk: Delivered electricity costs move with gas prices, pipeline capacity and market conditions.
  • Potential carbon lock-in: A plant built as a bridge can operate for decades unless contracts, dispatch limits or later clean replacements are planned from the start.

Gas is most defensible as a targeted reliability resource with a defined role, not as an assumption that every new AI load should be served by fossil generation indefinitely.

Side-by-side comparison for a data-center project

Option Firmness and resilience Time-to-energization considerations Emissions profile Economic and siting issues Flexibility
Renewables plus storage Variable generation; firmness depends on storage, grid support, geographic diversity and load flexibility. Can be staged quickly where land, equipment and interconnection are available; transmission and queues can still dominate. No operational combustion emissions; lifecycle emissions and contractual-versus-physical accounting must be separated. Include storage, transmission, interconnection, financing and curtailment rather than generation cost alone; land and permitting matter. Storage and flexible workloads can respond rapidly; renewable output itself follows weather.
Existing nuclear Firm, continuous output with planned and unplanned outages requiring contingencies. Potentially faster than building a new reactor if an operating plant and deliverable connection are nearby; project-specific. Zero operational emissions; lifecycle accounting remains relevant. Consider offtake terms, remaining plant life, outage costs, transmission and regulatory conditions. Strong for steady load; less suited than batteries or gas to rapid ramping.
New nuclear or SMR Designed for firm output once operating. Licensing, construction and equipment schedules make near-term dates uncertain; the IEA expects first SMRs around 2030. Zero operational emissions; evaluate full lifecycle and waste-management obligations. High capital, financing, cooling, safety, security and permitting requirements. Best aligned with sustained demand; supplemental resources cover outages and ramps.
Natural gas Dispatchable and controllable, subject to fuel, equipment and grid availability. Turbine lead times can still be several years; pipeline, air permits and interconnection may add time. Operational CO2 plus upstream methane exposure. Include fuel-price volatility, pipeline capacity, emissions compliance, water and local air permits. Useful for ramps and backup, but operating profile should be limited if emissions targets are strict.

How to choose a portfolio step by step

  1. Define the load and service level. Separate the campus’s steady computing load, cooling load, peak demand, construction phases and emergency loads. Document the required uptime, acceptable ride-through time and which workloads can be delayed or moved.
  2. Map the physical grid before selecting a generator. Obtain the utility’s available capacity, interconnection study, substation schedule, transmission constraints and outage history. Check whether a four-to-eight-year transmission timeline conflicts with the planned server launch.
  3. Set the project horizon. Treat immediate energization, the 2030 expansion and the 2035 decarbonization target as different procurement problems. A source that is unavailable for the first phase may still be valuable later.
  4. Build a layered supply plan. Use renewable contracts or on-site projects for incremental energy, storage and efficiency for flexibility, existing nuclear where a credible offtake is available, and selective gas or other firm resources for residual reliability needs.
  5. Calculate delivered economics. Include capacity value, storage, transmission, interconnection, fuel, financing, operations, maintenance, curtailment and the cost of replacement power during outages. Do not compare a renewable generation price directly with a firm delivered-power price.
  6. Test weather and outage cases. Model low-wind and low-solar periods, heat waves, cold snaps, fuel interruptions, transmission outages, reactor outages and simultaneous equipment failures. Verify that the remaining portfolio still meets the service level.
  7. Contract for attributes explicitly. State whether the agreement covers physical energy, capacity, hourly matching, renewable certificates, emissions accounting, outage replacement and curtailment risk. Annual renewable claims do not by themselves establish hourly physical supply.
  8. Stage decisions and keep options open. Preserve interconnection rights, land and equipment reservations for later storage, transmission or firm clean resources. Review the plan as load forecasts, SMR schedules, grid rules and technology costs change.

Decision matrix by project horizon

Project horizon Primary problem Most credible emphasis What to avoid
Immediate energization Deliver firm capacity before long transmission or reactor schedules arrive. Use available grid capacity, rapidly deployable renewables and storage, efficiency and demand flexibility; retain existing firm supply or contract selective gas where a documented gap remains. Assuming a new reactor or distant transmission line will be ready on an unverified date.
Expansion toward 2030 Match fast load growth with additional energy and dependable capacity. Scale renewables and storage, diversify locations and contracts, improve transmission, and secure firm offtake from existing nuclear or other dispatchable resources. Counting annual renewable energy as 24/7 capacity without weather and outage modeling.
Decarbonization toward 2035 Replace bridge fuels while preserving reliability. Add firm clean resources, evaluate nuclear and SMR opportunities on their actual licensing and construction status, expand storage and transmission, and reduce gas dispatch as alternatives become available. Locking in gas without an emissions, fuel-price and replacement strategy.

Answers to the questions operators ask most often

Is nuclear power better than natural gas for AI data centers?

Nuclear is generally stronger for firm, low-operational-emissions supply when an existing plant or a realistically scheduled new project can deliver to the site. Gas is generally stronger for dispatchable bridging when the clean alternative cannot meet the required date. Neither wins automatically: nuclear timing and capital risk can be decisive, while gas carries CO2, methane and fuel-price exposure.

What is the cleanest reliable power source for an AI data center?

A portfolio anchored by firm clean generation, renewable energy, storage, transmission and efficiency is cleaner and more reliable than relying on one intermittent source or one fossil plant. Existing nuclear can provide firm low-operational-emissions output; renewables reduce incremental emissions; storage and grid resources cover variability. The appropriate mix depends on the site’s physical connection and accounting boundary.

Why are data centers using natural gas?

Gas is dispatchable and can fill a capacity gap while transmission, renewable projects or new nuclear are being developed. Its use is a scheduling and reliability decision, not proof that gas has the lowest total cost or lowest emissions. The project should quantify how often gas will run, how fuel will be delivered and what replaces it if emissions limits tighten.

Will small modular reactors be ready in time for AI power demand?

The IEA expects first SMRs around 2030, but that expectation does not establish a guaranteed commercial date for a particular campus. Developers with near-term load should procure interim capacity and treat an SMR as a later option until licensing, financing, construction, fuel and interconnection milestones are contractually credible.

Bottom line

For most AI data-center programs, the best answer is a portfolio rather than a winner-take-all technology. Build renewable energy, storage, efficiency and transmission as quickly as the site allows; preserve or contract existing nuclear for firm low-emissions supply; plan new firm clean resources for the 2030s; and use natural gas only where its dispatchability closes a documented near-term reliability or schedule gap. Revisit that balance as the load, grid and project timelines become clearer.
