There is no universal winner. Renewables are expected to supply nearly half of additional global data-center electricity through 2030, natural gas remains the largest near-term source in the United States, and nuclear becomes more important later in the decade and beyond. The right choice for a particular campus depends on local grid and transmission capacity, how quickly new power is needed, the amount of firm 24/7 capacity required, emissions goals, financing, and whether “clean” electricity is physically delivered or represented through contracts.

Why the power choice has become a data-center design issue

Artificial-intelligence training, inference, cloud services and conventional enterprise workloads are driving rapid growth in electricity demand. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that data centers consumed about 415 TWh, or 1.5% of global electricity, in 2024. In the IEA’s Energy and AI Base Case, generation supplying data centers is modeled at 460 TWh in 2024, more than 1,000 TWh in 2030 and 1,300 TWh in 2035.

Those two 2024 figures describe different things. The 415 TWh number is an estimate of electricity consumed by data centers. The 460 TWh number is generation required to supply them in the IEA model, which accounts for the electricity system serving the load. They should not be treated as interchangeable measurements or as evidence that one technology supplies a fixed percentage at every facility.

At this scale, an operator is not choosing only a fuel. It is choosing a physical supply arrangement, a grid connection, transmission upgrades, backup strategy, contracting method and timetable. A technically attractive source can be unusable if a site cannot obtain an interconnection, while a fast-to-build source can conflict with emissions or permitting requirements.

What the current evidence says about the supply mix

Global physical electricity mix

In the IEA’s 2025 estimate of electricity physically consumed by data centers worldwide, coal supplies about 30%, renewables 27%, natural gas 26% and nuclear 15%. The accounting includes onsite generation and the local grid mix. It is therefore a physical-system estimate, not the contractual mix an operator may report through power-purchase agreements or renewable certificates.

The percentages are global averages. A facility connected to a hydro-rich grid, a gas-heavy regional system or a constrained industrial network can have a materially different physical mix even if its owner signs the same type of annual clean-energy contract as another operator.

United States supply is more gas-heavy

For the United States, the IEA models natural gas at more than 40% of electricity serving data centers, renewables (mostly solar photovoltaic and wind) at 24%, nuclear at about 20% and coal at about 15%. These are modeled physical supply shares in the report’s analysis, not a permanent national average or a guarantee for any individual site.

The IEA expects gas to be the largest source of additional U.S. data-center supply through 2030. The U.S. Department of Energy, citing an Electric Power Research Institute estimate, says data centers could consume up to 9% of U.S. electricity generation annually by 2030, compared with 4% of total load in 2023. The 9% figure is EPRI’s estimate; DOE is the agency that cites it.

Emissions outlook

In the IEA Base Case, emissions from electricity generation for data centers peak at roughly 320 million metric tons of CO2 in 2030, then decline shallowly to about 300 million tons in 2035. This is a scenario result, not an observed future outcome. It reflects the modeled growth of demand and the changing generation mix, and it should not be presented as a guaranteed emissions trajectory.

How to compare nuclear, gas and renewables without misleading yourself

A useful comparison starts by defining the boundary. “Powering a data center” can mean electricity physically delivered through the local grid, power generated onsite, capacity contracted from a specific project, or an annual accounting claim. Those are different products.

Decision factor Nuclear Natural gas Renewables
Role supported by current evidence Existing nuclear is a material source in some grids; the IEA expects its importance to grow toward the end of this decade and beyond. Already a major source, especially in the United States; expected to meet substantial near-term growth. Fastest-growing source in the IEA outlook; wind and solar are projected to meet nearly half of additional global demand through 2030.
Firmness at the point of use Can provide continuous generation when an operating plant and grid connection are available. Dispatchable generation can follow load when fuel supply and equipment are available. Output varies with weather and time; firm service generally requires storage, overbuilding, firm contracts or grid support.
Typical delivery question Is an existing plant nearby, or is a new reactor actually licensed, financed and under construction? Can an existing plant, new turbine or pipeline serve the site within the interconnection and permitting schedule? Can new projects and transmission be completed, and what covers hours with low wind or sunlight?
Emissions comparison No like-for-like lifecycle number across all three technologies is established. No like-for-like lifecycle number across all three technologies is established. No like-for-like lifecycle number across all three technologies is established.
Cost and schedule comparison No comparable project-level cost or commissioning timeline is established for all options. No comparable project-level cost or commissioning timeline is established for all options. No comparable project-level cost or commissioning timeline is established for all options.

The absence of a common number matters. A claim that one source is cheapest, quickest or most reliable is incomplete unless it specifies the location, plant design, financing, fuel and transmission assumptions, construction date, operating profile and whether backup capacity is included.

Nuclear power: firm low-carbon supply with a long development horizon

Where nuclear helps

Nuclear plants can deliver large amounts of steady generation without the combustion emissions associated with gas or coal. For a data-center campus that needs a high load factor, an operating reactor connected to a capable grid can reduce exposure to short-term weather variability. Existing nuclear capacity can also provide a physical supply source that is distinct from an annual accounting claim.

The IEA expects nuclear to play an increasingly important role toward the end of this decade and beyond. Its modeled global mix includes small modular reactors (SMRs) only after 2030. That timing means SMRs should be discussed as a longer-term possibility, not as capacity already available at commercial scale for near-term projects.

What a nuclear plan must prove

  • Operating status: distinguish an operating reactor from a proposal, site announcement or early-stage development.
  • Grid deliverability: confirm transmission capability, interconnection rights and the ability to serve the data-center load during maintenance or outages.
  • Licensing and schedule: a reactor project must clear regulatory, financing, construction and commissioning milestones; no universal schedule is established.
  • Capacity allocation: determine whether the campus receives physical power, a contract for output, or only an attribute such as zero-emissions certificates.
  • Contingency supply: plan for refueling outages, grid disturbances and any gap between the data-center opening and reactor availability.

Nuclear can therefore be a strong fit for long-lived campuses with access to existing nuclear generation or a credible long-term project. It is a poor assumption for a facility whose first load must be energized before a proposed reactor could plausibly operate.

Natural gas: dispatchable capacity for near-term growth

Why gas is expanding now

Gas-fired generation is already a large source of data-center electricity, particularly in the United States. The IEA expects gas to provide the largest share of additional U.S. supply through 2030. Existing plants can sometimes serve new demand faster than a completely new generation and transmission build, and dispatchable turbines can respond when data-center load is high or renewable output is low.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That advantage is conditional. A site still needs fuel transportation, interconnection capacity, emissions permits and a reliable operating plan. New gas plants may face local air-quality rules, pipeline constraints or community opposition, while existing plants may not have spare capacity during regional peaks.

Questions that prevent an unrealistic gas plan

  • Is the proposed supply an operating plant, an expansion, or a new facility that still needs permits and financing?
  • Does the gas network have firm transportation rights, storage and redundancy for extreme-weather conditions?
  • Will the data center count direct onsite combustion, grid purchases and backup generators in the same emissions inventory?
  • What happens if a pipeline, compressor station, turbine or transmission line is unavailable?
  • Is the arrangement intended as a bridge to lower-carbon supply or as the campus’s full-life power strategy?

The available evidence does not support a single lifecycle-emissions ranking for gas against nuclear and renewables. Gas can lower dependence on coal in some systems, but that observation is not a substitute for a project-specific assessment of combustion, fuel production, methane leakage, construction and backup requirements.

Renewables: fastest growth, with an hourly-delivery challenge

What the IEA outlook projects

The IEA projects renewables to grow at an average annual rate of 22% from 2024 through 2030 and to meet nearly 50% of additional global data-center electricity demand over that period. Wind and solar account for most of the growth in the outlook. Some capacity is financed through corporate power-purchase agreements, while some is directly co-located with data centers.

This projection describes additions to power systems and generation, not a promise that every site can obtain renewable electricity in every hour. A wind or solar project may produce more or less than the campus load at a given moment, and transmission can separate the project from the facility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Physical supply versus contractual matching

An annual power-purchase agreement can match a data center’s yearly consumption with an equivalent amount of renewable generation without matching production and consumption hour by hour. During a windless night or a cloudy period, the facility may still draw from the local grid or from firm backup. The physical electricity then reflects the grid mix, even though the operator may report an annual renewable match.

For a credible claim, publish the accounting boundary and time basis: onsite generation, a physically delivered project, grid supply, hourly matching, annual matching or certificates. Do not present an annual contract as continuous physical delivery.

What makes a renewable-heavy design workable

  • Resource diversity: combine projects in different regions or with different production patterns where transmission allows.
  • Storage and firming: size batteries or other firming resources against the required duration, not just the instantaneous peak.
  • Grid capacity: verify that transmission and distribution upgrades can move power when projects produce it.
  • Load flexibility: schedule suitable computing jobs for periods of high renewable output where workload and service-level agreements permit.
  • Residual supply: identify the generation that serves remaining hours and include it in emissions reporting.

Grid capacity and timing often decide before fuel choice

A data center cannot consume generation that cannot reach its switchgear. Interconnection studies, substations, transmission construction, transformer availability and queue position can dominate the schedule. A nearby gas plant, reactor or renewable project is not automatically deliverable to the campus.

Use a staged capacity plan rather than a single nameplate number:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the load shape. Record initial IT load, cooling load, power-usage effectiveness assumptions, ramp rates and the expected expansion schedule.
  2. Map the physical network. Identify substations, transmission constraints, feeder limits, fault-duty requirements and the utility’s interconnection milestones.
  3. Separate energization dates. Set the date for the first usable megawatt apart from the date for full build-out; they may require different resources.
  4. Test firm capacity. Model low-renewable periods, generator outages, transmission outages, fuel interruptions and maintenance windows.
  5. Assign each megawatt a source and contract. Label it as grid, onsite, physically delivered, contracted or backup supply.
  6. Recheck the plan at each expansion gate. A campus that doubles load can invalidate the original interconnection and procurement assumptions.

This process prevents a common error: selecting a generation technology first and discovering later that the local network cannot deliver the required capacity on the required date.

A practical decision framework for operators

Choose a gas-led bridge when near-term firm capacity is the binding constraint

A gas-led strategy may fit a site that must energize quickly, has an existing gas and transmission network, and can meet its emissions obligations while longer-term projects are built. The plan should state how much capacity is temporary, what replaces or supplements it, and how fuel and outage risks are managed.

Choose a renewable-led portfolio when growth and emissions goals dominate

A renewable-led portfolio can fit a campus with access to multiple projects, adequate transmission, storage or other firming resources, and workloads that tolerate some flexibility. The operator should report the residual grid supply rather than treating annual matching as hourly physical delivery.

Choose nuclear exposure when long-term firmness is valuable and timing is credible

Nuclear may fit a large, durable load near an operating plant or a project with an established regulatory and construction pathway. It should not be the sole near-term plan when the reactor is only proposed or when the campus opening precedes the expected commissioning window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a portfolio when no single source meets every requirement

Many campuses will combine grid purchases, renewables, storage, dispatchable generation and long-term contracts. A portfolio can reduce dependence on any one weather pattern, fuel network or construction schedule, but it must still identify who supplies power during each hour and how outages are covered.

How to report emissions and clean-energy claims accurately

Publish at least three separate figures:

  • Physical electricity consumed: the power that actually reaches the facility from onsite generation and the local grid.
  • Contracted or attributed electricity: volumes covered by power-purchase agreements, certificates or other instruments.
  • Residual supply and emissions: the grid or generation serving hours not covered by the physical project, plus the accounting method and boundary.

Keep generation and consumption units clear. The IEA’s 415 TWh global consumption estimate for 2024 is not the same metric as its 460 TWh generation figure for supply. Likewise, the modeled 320 million tons of CO2 in 2030 is not a measured emissions total for an individual operator.

When comparing technologies, use the same lifecycle boundary and time period for all of them. The evidence summarized here does not provide comparable lifecycle-emissions, project-cost, commissioning-time or reliability figures across nuclear, gas and renewables, so a precise ranking would overstate what is known.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Calling a contract the physical power mix

Mistake: claiming a campus runs on 100% renewable electricity because annual purchases equal annual consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: disclose hourly physical supply, grid dependence and the contract’s matching period.

Treating a forecast as a commitment

Mistake: presenting the IEA’s 2030 or 2035 scenario as a guaranteed market outcome.

Correction: label it as a Base Case projection and explain that policy, construction, demand and grid conditions can change.

Assuming a nearby plant can serve the campus

Mistake: equating geographic proximity with deliverable capacity.

Correction: distinguish operating reactors, projects under construction and proposals, then maintain an independent near-term supply plan.

What the outlook means through 2035

The IEA’s base case points to a mixed transition rather than a sudden replacement of one technology. Renewables grow fastest and meet nearly half of additional global demand through 2030. Gas and coal together still meet more than 40% of additional demand in that period. Nuclear’s contribution grows later, with SMRs entering the modeled global mix after 2030.

For developers, the practical implication is sequencing. Secure enough firm capacity to open the campus, build renewable and storage resources as transmission and projects become available, and evaluate nuclear opportunities on a schedule that reflects licensing and construction reality. For buyers and regulators, require claims to distinguish physical delivery, grid mix and contractual attributes.

Bottom line: match the source to the site, schedule and claim

Renewables are the fastest-growing source in the current outlook, gas is the dominant near-term growth source in the United States, and nuclear is increasingly important for the longer term. None is automatically best for every data center. The defensible choice is the one that can deliver the required megawatts through the available grid on the required date, withstand low-output and outage conditions, satisfy the site’s emissions objective, and describe its physical and contractual electricity honestly.
