The nuclear medicine equipment market is on a growth path through 2035, but the size depends on what each analyst includes. Future Market Insights puts the equipment market at USD 2.6 billion in 2025 and USD 3.9 billion in 2035, a 4.1% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). GE HealthCare cites a much broader nuclear-medicine projection of approximately $7.8 billion in 2024 to more than $30.7 billion by 2034. Those figures are not interchangeable: the publishers use different definitions of nuclear medicine and equipment.

The common direction is clear. Theranostics, wider radiopharmaceutical access, hybrid PET/CT and SPECT/CT, quantitative software, and standardized workflows are moving nuclear medicine from specialized imaging toward an integrated precision-care service.

Estimate Starting point Forecast What it covers
Future Market Insights (2025) USD 2.6 billion in 2025 USD 3.9 billion in 2035; 4.1% CAGR Nuclear-medicine equipment market as defined by the report
GE HealthCare (2026) Approximately $7.8 billion in 2024 More than $30.7 billion in 2034 A broader nuclear-medicine market projection; scope differs from the equipment-only estimate
International Atomic Energy Agency (publication accessed 2026) $1.41 billion SPECT/SPECT-CT market estimate in 2018 Approximately $1.934 billion in 2025; about 4.64% CAGR SPECT and SPECT/CT segment

The figures should therefore be read as directional evidence rather than a single market total. The narrower equipment forecast still implies sustained replacement and expansion demand, while the broader projection includes more of the clinical and infrastructure ecosystem.

What is driving nuclear medicine equipment market growth?

Theranostics connects diagnosis with treatment

Theranostics uses a molecular target first to identify disease and then, where appropriate, to deliver a therapeutic radionuclide against the same or a related target. This model requires more than a scanner. Providers need reliable radiopharmaceutical supply, quantitative image analysis, dosimetry, treatment-planning workflows, radiation-safety procedures, and coordination among nuclear medicine, oncology, physics, pharmacy, and referring teams.

GE HealthCare describes the field as moving “from early innovation to large-scale clinical implementation.” The practical implication is that hospitals evaluating equipment increasingly assess the entire workflow rather than detector performance alone. Software for lesion segmentation, kinetic analysis, treatment response, and longitudinal comparison becomes part of the clinical platform.

Hybrid imaging improves localization and decision-making

SPECT/CT and PET/CT combine functional or molecular information with anatomical localization. That combination supports staging, prognosis, treatment planning, and response monitoring while helping clinicians distinguish abnormal tracer uptake from nearby normal structures. The IAEA describes hybrid imaging as a way to tailor interventions to an individual patient, consistent with personalized medicine.

Hybrid systems also make established radionuclide procedures more useful. SPECT remains a large installed and revenue segment, while CT or PET localization can reduce ambiguity that would remain with a standalone functional study.

Radiopharmaceutical access is expanding

More available tracers and targeted radiotherapies increase the number of clinical programs that can justify nuclear-medicine infrastructure. Onsite or regional production can reduce dependence on shipping and help manage short shelf lives, although it adds cyclotron, radiochemistry, shielding, quality-control, and regulatory requirements.

Quantification and workflow automation are becoming core features

AI-assisted reconstruction and analytics are being used to support lesion segmentation, kinetic modeling, standardized uptake or activity measurements, dosimetry, and follow-up comparisons. Automation can improve consistency and throughput, but implementation still depends on validated protocols, trained staff, interoperable data systems, and oversight by qualified clinicians and physicists.

Are SPECT/CT and PET/CT the future of nuclear medicine?

They are the central modality trend, but they serve different clinical and operational needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Platform Primary strength Typical use in the growth story Key planning issue
Standalone SPECT Functional imaging with comparatively simpler infrastructure Existing installed base, cardiac and bone studies, and cost-sensitive expansion Less anatomical localization than a hybrid system
SPECT/CT Tracer distribution plus CT localization and attenuation correction Oncology, cardiology, theranostic imaging, and quantitative follow-up CT dose, room requirements, and protocol integration
PET/CT High-sensitivity molecular imaging with rapid anatomical correlation Oncology staging, response assessment, and PET-based theranostics Tracer logistics, radiochemistry access, and high capital and facility demands
PET/MRI Molecular imaging combined with high soft-tissue contrast Selected oncology, neurology, and research applications Higher complexity, longer examinations, and specialized staffing

Hybrid imaging is not a replacement decision in isolation. A hospital must match the platform to its tracer supply, referral volume, reimbursement environment, room shielding, technologist coverage, radiologist and nuclear-medicine expertise, and expected service life.

Which clinical segments are creating demand?

Oncology leads the cited application forecast

Future Market Insights estimates oncology at 38.4% of 2025 nuclear-medicine equipment application revenue. Imaging is used for detection, staging, treatment selection, response assessment, and surveillance. Theranostics adds a requirement to quantify disease burden and document whether a target is present before treatment.

Cardiology and neurology remain important

Cardiac perfusion and viability studies continue to support SPECT demand, while PET and SPECT applications in neurology address conditions such as dementia, movement disorders, epilepsy, and brain-tumor evaluation. Their relative contribution varies by local referral patterns, tracer availability, and reimbursement.

Hospitals anchor purchasing

Hospitals account for an estimated 47.6% of 2025 end-user revenue in the Future Market Insights forecast. That reflects the need to combine imaging with pharmacy, oncology, inpatient care, emergency support, and multidisciplinary treatment decisions. At the same time, mobile and community-access models can extend PET capacity to sites that cannot support a permanent scanner or radiopharmacy.

What does the installed base say about future demand?

Technetium-99m (Tc-99m) is used in about 85% of nuclear-medicine diagnostic procedures worldwide, with more than 30 million patients examined annually, according to the IAEA. That scale supports continuing demand for SPECT capacity, service contracts, quality assurance, and replacement parts even as PET and theranostic applications expand.

An INIS 2026 Form 10-K states that, as of September 2025, at least 131 countries had more than 29,000 installed SPECT/PET cameras. The installed base creates a recurring market beyond new scanner sales: calibration sources, reference standards, shielding, software updates, detector servicing, and replacement equipment.

What equipment and software does a theranostics program need?

  1. Imaging hardware: SPECT/CT or PET/CT with quantitative acquisition and reconstruction capabilities appropriate to the intended tracers.
  2. Quantification software: Tools for segmentation, activity measurement, kinetic analysis, dosimetry, and longitudinal response assessment.
  3. Radiopharmaceutical infrastructure: Reliable tracer procurement, validated receiving and storage, and—where justified—onsite cyclotron or radiometal production.
  4. Radiation protection and facilities: Shielded rooms, controlled access, contamination monitoring, waste handling, and workflows that meet local regulations.
  5. People and governance: Nuclear-medicine physicians, technologists, medical physicists, radiopharmacists, oncology partners, and documented protocols for patient selection and treatment follow-up.
  6. Interoperability: DICOM and clinical-system integration so images, quantitative results, reports, and treatment records can be reviewed together.

GE HealthCare’s cited portfolio illustrates this stack with StarGuide digital SPECT/CT, MIM LesionID Pro and MIM KineticID software, and MINItrace Magni for onsite PET-tracer or radiometal production. These products demonstrate a direction of travel, not an independent measure of total market share.

How should a provider compare nuclear medicine platforms?

Decision area Questions to ask
Clinical fit Which oncology, cardiac, neurologic, and theranostic procedures will be performed, and at what weekly volume?
Quantification Are segmentation, kinetic modeling, dosimetry, and longitudinal measurements validated for the intended tracers?
Throughput What are the acquisition, reconstruction, reporting, and room-turnaround times under the site’s staffing model?
Radiopharmaceutical ecosystem Can the site obtain required tracers reliably, or does it need onsite production and radiochemistry capability?
Facilities Will shielding, electrical capacity, HVAC, CT requirements, patient flow, and waste handling fit the proposed room?
Serviceability What calibration schedule, uptime commitment, parts availability, software support, and regulatory assistance are included?
Economics What are the capital cost, staffing burden, reimbursement assumptions, consumables, maintenance, and total cost of ownership?

What calibration equipment is needed for SPECT and PET?

Routine quality assurance uses calibration sources and reference standards to check camera uniformity, energy windows, sensitivity, spatial performance, dose calibrators, and related radiopharmacy equipment. Shielding and handling accessories are also part of a compliant setup. The exact test set depends on the camera, radionuclide, local regulations, and the manufacturer’s acceptance and constancy protocols.

INIS/RadQual supplies calibration and reference products for SPECT/PET cameras and radiopharmacy equipment, along with shielding and accessories. Its 2026 filing notes that most radioactive calibration products are replaced after approximately 18 months to two years. That replacement cycle is a recurring operating requirement, not a one-time scanner purchase.

What could slow the market?

  • Forecast scope: Published totals cannot be added together because market boundaries differ.
  • Tracer supply: Short half-lives, production interruptions, transport constraints, and limited regional availability can restrict utilization.
  • Workforce: Theranostics needs specialized physicians, technologists, physicists, pharmacists, and radiation-safety expertise.
  • Capital and facilities: Hybrid scanners, shielding, cyclotrons, and controlled workflows require substantial construction and compliance work.
  • Evidence and reimbursement: New tracers and software need clinical validation, regulatory clearance where applicable, and payment pathways.
  • Interoperability: Disconnected imaging, pharmacy, dosimetry, and oncology systems can erase the efficiency gains promised by automation.

The market outlook is therefore positive but operationally demanding. Growth will favor providers that can connect hardware, radiopharmaceutical logistics, quantitative software, quality assurance, and multidisciplinary care into one dependable service.
