NTFS means New Technology File System. It is the file system Windows uses to organize files, folders, and metadata on a storage volume—not a drive or a separate consumer product. Its permissions and storage-management features make it suited to Windows systems, while compatibility and size requirements help determine when another format is a better fit.

What is NTFS?

A file system defines how an operating system stores and retrieves information on a storage device, including how files are arranged into directories and volumes. Microsoft identifies NTFS as the default file system for modern Windows-based operating systems. Microsoft’s NTFS overview describes its role and supported Windows versions; its local file systems documentation explains the broader concept.

Formatting a volume with NTFS creates the structures Windows uses to manage its contents. The format itself does not make a physical drive, nor does choosing NTFS automatically encrypt everything stored on it.

How NTFS organizes files

The Master File Table

At the center of an NTFS volume is the Master File Table (MFT). Microsoft says the volume has an MFT entry for every file, including the MFT itself. Entries hold file information such as size, timestamps, and permissions, or describe where the file’s content is stored. As files are added, the MFT can grow. Deleted entries may be reused, but space allocated to the MFT does not automatically shrink. See Microsoft’s Master File Table documentation.

Management and protection features

NTFS supports access-control lists (ACLs) for files and folders, encryption-related features, disk quotas, compression, and rich metadata. It also journals metadata and maintains a file-change log, capabilities Microsoft contrasts with other file systems in its file system functionality comparison.

These are file-system capabilities, not guarantees that data is secure or recoverable in every circumstance. For example, BitLocker is a separately configured drive-encryption feature that works with NTFS; formatting a drive as NTFS alone does not encrypt it.

What are NTFS size limits?

There is no single practical NTFS maximum that applies to every Windows system. Limits vary by Windows version and allocation-unit (cluster) size, and applications or services can impose lower limits than the file system itself.

Microsoft’s NTFS overview, updated June 18, 2025, says volumes can be up to 8 petabytes (PB) on Windows 10 version 1709 and later and Windows Server 2019 and later, subject to cluster size and other constraints. It gives 256 terabytes (TB) as the volume limit for earlier Windows versions. The same overview’s cluster-size table ranges from 16 TB with 4 KB clusters to 8 PB with 2048 KB clusters. Certain Previous Versions or Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) configurations without a SAN or RAID enclosure can have a lower limit, such as 64 TB.

A separate Microsoft comparison, updated March 26, 2023, lists an NTFS maximum file size of 264−1 bytes and volume limits of 16 TB with 4 KB clusters or 256 TB with 64 KB clusters. These figures come from a different comparison context than the newer, Windows-version-specific overview. A file-size ceiling and a volume-size ceiling are different measures, and neither should be treated as a universal practical capacity. Check the applicable Windows version, cluster size, application, and storage configuration.

How NTFS compares with other Windows file systems

The right format depends on where a volume will be used and which features it needs. Microsoft’s comparison covers NTFS, exFAT, UDF, and FAT32; its ReFS overview describes additional differences between ReFS and NTFS. These formats are options with different capabilities, not a universal ranking.

  • NTFS: A natural choice for Windows volumes that need features such as ACL permissions, quotas, compression, and journaling.
  • exFAT: Consider it when portability across devices is important, then check support on the actual operating systems and devices involved.
  • FAT32: Microsoft lists a maximum file size of 4 GiB in its comparison, which can rule it out when individual files exceed that limit.
  • ReFS: Microsoft documents features shared with NTFS as well as capabilities unique to each. In its comparison, NTFS supports disk quotas, bootability, removable media, and shrinking, which ReFS does not. Some ReFS capabilities depend on specific Windows Server versions or storage configurations.

How to choose a file system

Before formatting a volume, consider the full use case rather than the format name alone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which operating systems, devices, or removable-media readers must access it?
  • Do you need Windows permissions, encryption features, compression, quotas, or journaling?
  • How large can an individual file be, and how large must the entire volume be? Verify both limits for the Windows version and cluster size in use.
  • Does the volume need to boot Windows, support a server-storage configuration, or move among different devices?

For a Windows volume that needs Windows management and security features, NTFS is typically the relevant starting point. For portability or specialized server storage, verify that the alternative supports the required devices, features, and configuration before formatting. Microsoft’s ReFS overview is relevant when evaluating ReFS support.
