Choose Nova Launcher if you want to design a conventional Android home screen with adjustable pages, an app drawer, dock, folders, icons, gestures and saved layouts. Choose Niagara Launcher if you prefer a quiet, list-based home screen with alphabetical app access and notifications you can handle without opening each app. Neither is a universal speed or usability winner; the right choice depends on how you want to find and interact with apps.
The short answer
Nova and Niagara solve the same problem in opposite ways. Nova keeps the familiar Android desktop model and gives you extensive control over its layout. Niagara removes most of the desktop furniture and turns the home screen into a focused app list.
- Pick Nova for multiple home-screen pages, custom icon placement, docks, folders, icon themes, gestures, notification badges, drawer folders and backup/restore.
- Pick Niagara for a minimalist screen, fast alphabetical navigation, notification interaction from the home screen and fewer visible decisions.
- Check compatibility first if the phone runs Android 7 or older. Niagara’s support policy has dated cutoffs for those versions, while the reviewed Nova FAQ does not publish a complete current minimum-version matrix.
Both launchers can be installed without paying. Their paid tiers matter when you need advanced customization: Nova Prime removes advertising and adds features such as gestures, badges and app-drawer folders, while Niagara Pro adds most of its visual personalization and widget options.
How the two launchers are designed
Nova: build the home screen you have in mind
Nova describes itself as a replacement for the Android home screen. Its model is familiar: place shortcuts and widgets on one or more desktop pages, keep frequently used apps in a dock, group related apps in folders and open the full app drawer when something is not on the desktop. You can adjust the arrangement, icon appearance and other visual details, then save and restore a layout.

This approach suits people who enjoy tuning a phone over time. You can create a work page, a travel page and a personal page, or keep a single dense page with a carefully arranged dock. The trade-off is that Nova gives you many decisions to make. A highly customized layout can be efficient once it is finished, but it can also take longer to build and maintain.
Niagara: find an app from a list instead of a grid
Niagara presents a clean home screen centered on an alphabetical app list. Its design reduces the number of icons, pages and folders you see at once. An alphabet rail provides a direct route to an app, and Niagara’s home-screen notification features let you interact with supported notifications without first opening the corresponding app.
The vendor describes its philosophy as making every feature simple and free of unnecessary complexity. That is product positioning rather than an independent usability test, but it accurately explains the design choice: Niagara asks you to remember an app’s name or first letter instead of remembering where you placed an icon.

Is Nova more customizable than Niagara?
Nova offers broader control over a traditional launcher layout. You can decide where icons, folders and widgets sit, how many desktop pages exist, what appears in the dock and how the app drawer is organized. Prime adds gestures, notification badges and app-drawer folders to that model.
Niagara is customizable in a different direction. Its free tier intentionally exposes fewer controls, while Pro unlocks community and curated themes, icon packs, font and clock changes, widgets and pop-up folders. Those options can change Niagara’s appearance substantially, but they do not turn it into a page-and-grid launcher.

Therefore, a blanket claim that one is “more customizable” is misleading. Choose Nova when customization means constructing the layout itself. Choose Niagara when customization means styling a restrained list-based screen without rebuilding the entire desktop.
Nova Launcher: strengths, limits and best users
What Nova does well
- Traditional organization: pages, dock, folders and an app drawer work like the layout many Android users already know.
- Fine-grained placement: you control the position and density of shortcuts and widgets rather than accepting a fixed list.
- Power-user controls: Prime includes gestures, notification badges and app-drawer folders.
- Recoverable layouts: Nova highlights backup and restore, useful when changing phones or experimenting with a new design.
- Theme support: the official site highlights icon themes and other visual adjustments.
Where Nova may frustrate you
- The number of settings can make initial setup time-consuming.
- The free edition contains ads according to Nova’s official FAQ.
- Some of the features that make Nova especially useful are reserved for Prime.
- The reviewed FAQ does not give readers a complete, current Android minimum-version matrix, so compatibility should be checked on the phone rather than assumed.
Who should choose Nova
Nova is the better starting point for users who already think in terms of home-screen pages, folders and widgets, or who want to reproduce a carefully arranged layout across devices. It is also the natural choice for anyone who wants gesture shortcuts, drawer folders or extensive control over icon placement.

What Niagara does well
- Low visual clutter: the home screen emphasizes a short list instead of a field of icons.
- Alphabetical access: the alphabet rail gives you a predictable route to any installed app.
- Notification interaction: supported notifications can be handled from the launcher itself.
- Ad-free free tier: Niagara’s official homepage lists the free version as ad-free.
- Optional personalization: Pro adds themes, icons, fonts, clock styling, widgets and pop-up folders without abandoning the list-first model.
Where Niagara may frustrate you
- People who rely on several pages of spatially arranged shortcuts may find the list model restrictive.
- The free tier has limited customization, so the look you want may require Pro.
- Alphabetical navigation favors users who know an app’s name; it is less useful if you prefer grouping apps by position or visual category.
- Older Android phones have a defined support sunset, described below.
Who should choose Niagara
Niagara fits users who want the home screen to disappear into the background, who open apps by name or first letter, and who value notification actions without repeatedly entering apps. It is also a good fit for a phone that feels overloaded by pages, folders and duplicate shortcuts.
Nova Prime and Niagara Pro: what you pay for
Both launchers have a usable free entry point, but the paid tiers are not equivalent products.

Storefront, country and tax differences can change what you see at checkout. Treat the Niagara amounts as the official homepage’s listed prices, not a guaranteed regional total. Nova’s current price should be verified in the purchase screen because the reviewed official pages confirm the purchase models but not a dollar amount.

Privacy disclosures: what the published policies say
Neither launcher should be described as having passed an independent security or telemetry audit. The available information consists of each vendor’s own policy and FAQ disclosures.
Nova’s disclosures
Nova’s privacy policy, effective April 20, 2026, identifies Instabridge Sweden AB as the operator and data controller for the services it describes. The policy lists potential categories such as identifiers, device and installed-app information, approximate location, purchases and diagnostics, and names service providers that may process data. Nova’s FAQ separately says that crash reports and analytics are collected.
Those statements do not establish that Nova sells personal data, nor do they establish that no information leaves the device. They describe categories and processing relationships; readers who need a precise answer for a managed or privacy-sensitive phone should read the full policy and check the permissions and diagnostics choices presented in the current app.
Niagara’s disclosures
Niagara’s privacy summary, last updated April 16, 2026, says Firebase interaction reports concern interaction with Niagara itself and do not include app names or how often other apps are opened. It says broader usage reports, such as app sessions and unlocks, are not collected by default and are shared only when a user opts into the Digital Wellbeing research initiative.
The same summary says the optional weather widget sends an approximated location to a weather provider. If you do not use that widget, that specific feature is not part of your launcher routine. For binding details, consult Niagara’s full privacy policy rather than relying only on the summary.

Android compatibility and support dates
Niagara’s published support boundary
Niagara states that Android 8 and newer remain fully supported. Its support notice says Pro purchases on Android 5, 6 and 7 stopped being available on June 11, 2026; updates for those versions ended July 1, 2026; and Niagara Pro and other internet-dependent features on those systems are scheduled to stop working January 1, 2027. The notice identifies version 1.16.14 as the final legacy-compatible release.
If the phone runs Android 5–7, do not treat a currently installed copy as a long-term solution. Check the operating-system version and plan for the stated service cutoff before moving your daily workflow to Niagara.
Nova’s published information
The reviewed Nova FAQ explains requirements for a particular Google Discover companion but does not provide a complete current minimum-version matrix for the launcher itself. On a phone with an unusual Android build, an old security patch level or a manufacturer-specific skin, verify installation and default-launcher behavior directly before committing to a migration.

On January 20, 2026, Instabridge announced that it had acquired Nova. The update said “Nova is not shutting down,” stated an intention to maintain compatibility and stability, and described plans to explore sustainable business options. It also said the company intended to honor existing Prime purchases.

Those are statements of intent and status from the dated company announcement, not a promise of a particular release schedule or future feature list. Niagara’s current pages provide active product, Pro-feature, privacy and support documentation, but documentation alone is not a controlled measure of future quality. Use these facts to understand stewardship, not to predict which launcher will receive more updates.

Choose by the way you use your phone
You want a desktop that behaves like a workspace
Choose Nova. A page-based layout lets you put a calendar, task list and communication apps where you expect them, then keep less-used apps in folders or the drawer. This is the closest match to a traditional Android workflow.
You want the fewest visible elements
Choose Niagara. The list-first screen removes the need to curate several pages and keeps the alphabet as the main navigation system.
You frequently change phones or layouts
Nova’s documented backup and restore capability is a meaningful advantage if preserving a designed layout matters. With either launcher, still confirm that widgets, icon packs and manufacturer-specific shortcuts restore as expected; a launcher backup cannot guarantee that every third-party widget recreates itself.

Niagara’s home-screen notification interaction is central to its appeal. Nova’s Prime feature list includes notification badges, but a badge is not the same interaction model as Niagara’s notification handling.
You want extensive gestures and drawer organization
Nova Prime is the more direct fit because gestures and app-drawer folders are explicitly listed among its paid features.
You are deciding mainly on speed or battery life
The available official pages do not provide a controlled head-to-head measurement of speed, battery use or usability. Do not choose based on an unsupported claim that one is universally faster or lighter. Test both on your own phone if those factors dominate your decision.
How to switch launchers safely
Android labels vary by manufacturer, but the process is similar. Keep your existing launcher available until the new one is configured.

- Install Nova Launcher or Niagara Launcher from the Google Play Store and open it once.
- When Android asks which home app to use, select the launcher and choose the option to make it the default. If no prompt appears, open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app; the exact wording can differ on Samsung, Pixel and other phones.
- Complete the launcher’s first-run choices. Grant only permissions that match features you intend to use, such as notification access for notification-related functions.
- Recreate or import your layout. In Nova, make a backup after arranging the desktop, dock and folders. In Niagara, add the apps and notification or widget features you actually use before investing in visual customization.
- Test calls, messaging, alarms, widgets, work-profile apps and gesture navigation. Some phone manufacturers limit background behavior or replace navigation gestures when a third-party home app is selected.
- Keep the previous launcher selected as an emergency fallback until you know that the new one works with your phone’s navigation, widgets and notification rules.
Common decision mistakes
- Comparing screenshots instead of interaction models: a themed Niagara screen may look highly customized, but it remains list-led; a sparse Nova screen is still based on a desktop and drawer.
- Assuming free means feature-complete: Nova’s free tier includes ads, and Niagara’s free tier limits customization. Read the paid-feature lists before switching.
- Ignoring Android version: Niagara’s Android 5–7 dates are explicit, and older phones can outlive support even when the launcher still opens.
- Treating privacy summaries as audits: the published policies are vendor disclosures, not independent network-traffic tests.
- Paying before testing navigation: install the free tier, set it as default temporarily and use it through a normal day. Buy a paid tier only after confirming that the core interaction suits you.
- Expecting a backup to restore everything: launcher layouts do not necessarily restore widget data, app permissions, icon-pack availability or manufacturer-specific shortcuts.
A practical decision checklist
Answer these questions before selecting a default:
- Do you want to place icons and widgets on pages, or select apps from an alphabetical list?
- Do you need folders and a dock, or would those elements add clutter?
- Are gestures, notification badges and drawer folders worth paying for?
- Would themes, fonts, widgets and pop-up folders justify Niagara Pro?
- Is an ad-free experience important on the free tier, or are you willing to purchase an upgrade?
- Does the phone run Android 8 or newer, and will its manufacturer allow the navigation and notification behavior you expect?
- Have you read the current privacy policy and checked whether optional features such as weather or research reporting fit your preferences?
Bottom line
Nova is the stronger match for a configurable, conventional Android home screen and for users who enjoy arranging the phone themselves. Niagara is the stronger match for a minimalist, alphabetical launcher that keeps app access and notification actions close at hand. Start with the free versions, decide whether you prefer layout-building or list navigation, then pay only for the tier whose specific features solve a problem you actually have.
