notionctl lets you inspect and change Notion databases from terminal commands and scripts: retrieve schemas, query rows, create databases, and update database titles or schemas. The PyPI package is named notionctl, but its installed command is notion. It is a code-driven CLI workflow—not a documented declarative system with automatic drift detection or migration planning.

What notionctl does—and what it does not

The project describes itself as a Notion CLI built for coding agents, emphasizing compact JSON output, structured errors, and meaningful exit codes. Its database commands provide a practical interface for inspecting and changing database structures and records through terminal workflows. PyPI’s notionctl listing and the project README document those capabilities.

“As code” here means you can invoke database operations from commands, scripts, or coding-agent workflows. The available documentation does not establish automatic comparison of a desired schema with a live database, drift detection, or migration planning. Treat changes as API operations you choose and run, not as a managed schema deployment system.

Install the package and confirm the command

PyPI documents these installation options:

  • pip install notionctl installs the package in the active Python environment.
  • uv tool install notionctl installs it as a tool through uv.
  • uvx notionctl runs it without a permanent tool installation.

The package listing reports Python 3.12 or later as a requirement. Its listed release is version 0.3.1, dated March 18, 2026; versions and runtime requirements can change, so check the current PyPI page when installing.

#1 Best Overall

Although the package is called notionctl, the documented executable is notion. Do not confuse it with Notion’s separately named official CLI, ntn.

Authenticate for interactive use or automation

Interactive use: browser OAuth

The project recommends browser-based OAuth for interactive work. During authorization, grant access to the pages the CLI needs to work with; authorization alone does not make every workspace page available.

CI and headless environments: API key

For CI or other headless use, the documentation supports setting NOTION_API_KEY or passing a token to an individual command with --token. Keep the real secret in your environment or secret manager; do not put it in a shared script, log, or committed configuration file. The project notes that credentials persist locally across uvx runs.

Inspect schemas, query rows, and make changes

The documented database commands cover the core lifecycle:

Task Command What it does
Inspect a database notion db get <id> Retrieves the database schema.
Fetch rows notion db query <id> Queries database rows, with human-friendly or JSON filters documented.
Create a database notion db create Creates a database.
Change a title or schema notion db update <id> Updates a database title or schema.

For editing a row’s contents, the project also documents updating page properties. It provides raw API passthrough for endpoints that do not have a dedicated command. Database IDs can be supplied as Notion URLs or UUIDs. Consult the README examples for the current argument and payload syntax before building a script around a particular operation.

Build safer scripts with JSON, NDJSON, and dry runs

The documented scripting controls are useful when a person or coding agent needs predictable command-line behavior:

  • Compact JSON output: makes command results easier to consume in scripts or agent workflows.
  • NDJSON input: supports batch operations by reading newline-delimited JSON from standard input.
  • --dry-run: is available on mutating commands so you can inspect a proposed operation before applying it.
  • Differentiated exit codes: distinguish outcomes such as not found, permission denied, and rate limited, enabling scripts to handle failures deliberately.

These controls improve observability and workflow integration, but they are not evidence of transaction guarantees, automatic rollback, or idempotency. A dry run is not a substitute for checking permissions and reviewing a change; plan for partial failure when batching mutations.

How notionctl differs from Notion’s official CLI

Notion’s help page describes its official CLI as ntn, available for Mac, Linux, and Windows. Notion says the official CLI is optional and intended for developer workflows; some features, including Worker management, depend on plan eligibility or workspace enablement. Those platform details apply to ntn, not to the third-party notionctl package. See Notion’s CLI help page.

Question notionctl Notion official CLI
Package or command name PyPI package notionctl; documented executable notion. Command ntn.
Installation ecosystem Python package tools: pip, uv, or uvx. Not stated in the cited official help page.
Authentication Browser OAuth for interactive use; API key via NOTION_API_KEY or --token for headless use. Not stated in the cited official help page.
Documented database schema operations Get, create, and update database title or schema; query rows. Not stated in the cited official help page.
Scripting and batch support Compact JSON, NDJSON stdin, dry-run for mutations, and differentiated exit codes are documented. Not stated in the cited official help page.
Worker management Not established by the cited notionctl documentation. Some Worker features depend on plan eligibility or workspace enablement.

Choose based on the task and the documentation available: notionctl explicitly documents database schema and row workflows, while Notion’s official CLI is the relevant choice to investigate if you need its platform-specific developer features, such as Worker management. The sources do not support a feature-by-feature performance comparison.

When this workflow fits

  • Use notionctl when you want to inspect database structures, query rows, or script documented database changes from a terminal.
  • It is especially relevant when a workflow needs machine-readable output, batch input, or explicit handling of common errors.
  • Do not assume it will keep a database synchronized with a schema file, generate migrations, or undo a failed multi-step change; those capabilities are not established in the package documentation.
