There is no verified, root-preserving OTA procedure that applies to every rooted Nothing Phone. Nothing documents the standard update path, but root-related steps depend on the exact model, firmware and root setup. Use Nothing’s normal Settings update flow only if you are prepared for root to change or be lost; do not flash an image or follow a root-update recipe unless it explicitly matches your device and build.
How to check for a Nothing Phone OTA update
- Connect your phone to Wi-Fi and charge it to at least 50%. Nothing Support recommends both for its general software-update process.
- Open Settings > System > System updates.
- Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available. Let the upgrade finish without pressing the power button or taking other actions, as Nothing advises.
These are Nothing’s instructions for its ordinary update flow, not a guarantee that an update will preserve root.
What changes when the phone is rooted?
Root procedures depend on the device type and boot-image details. Magisk’s official documentation distinguishes among device types, and Nothing’s public OTA instructions do not confirm one sequence that keeps root on every Nothing Phone. The available guidance therefore does not support a universal “restore stock, update, then patch” procedure.
Before following any root-specific instructions, identify the exact phone model, current and target firmware build, root method, and partition or update setup. Make a backup before modifying boot images. Use instructions only when they explicitly cover those details; never flash an image from another model or build. If you cannot verify a matching procedure, avoid experimenting and seek guidance for your exact setup.

Why an Android A/B update does not guarantee root will survive
On Android devices that use A/B updates, the updater writes the unused slot while the phone is running from the active one, then selects the updated slot for a later boot. The Android Open Source Project describes the design as keeping a workable booting system available during an OTA; if the updated slot cannot boot successfully, the prior bootable slot can provide a fallback.
This is a general explanation of A/B behavior, not confirmation that every Nothing model uses the same setup or that root will survive its update. Root commonly involves changes to boot-related images, so the outcome depends on the device and update implementation. Slot behavior alone is not a root-retention method.
What to do if the OTA fails
Nothing’s separate troubleshooting guidance for an OTA that will not work gives a different battery threshold from its general update instructions: it says the battery must be at least 40%. For this failure case, check the following:

- Check that the network signal is stable.
- Check that enough storage is available.
