The Samsung Galaxy A36 5G is the clearer choice if long-term software support and a stated water-resistance rating matter most: Samsung promises six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades, six years of security updates, and an IP67 rating. The Nothing Phone (3a) has a slightly larger screen on the specifications available here, but those figures alone do not establish a better buy. There is no verified current, like-for-like price comparison, independent performance test, camera comparison, or battery-runtime test to name a universal winner.
How to choose between the Nothing Phone (3a) and Galaxy A36 5G
Start with the differences that are documented, then check local listings for the exact memory and storage configuration you plan to buy. Prices, configurations, network bands, charger inclusion and features can vary by country and seller. The Nothing specifications cited below come from its India product page; Samsung’s launch price and update-policy statement are from its US announcement, while Samsung’s product information may differ by region.

- Prioritize support and ingress protection: the Galaxy A36 5G has Samsung’s stated six-generation OS/One UI upgrade and six-year security-update policy, plus an IP67 rating.
- Prioritize screen size: Nothing lists the Phone (3a) at 6.77 inches, compared with Samsung’s 6.7-inch display. That small size difference does not establish overall screen quality.
- Prioritize value: compare current local prices for the same RAM and storage configuration. The available official price is only Samsung’s historical US launch starting price, not a current offer or a direct price gap.

Display: a small size difference, not a proven quality winner
Nothing lists a 6.77-inch FHD+ flexible AMOLED panel with adaptive refresh up to 120 Hz and HDR10+. Samsung lists a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Both manufacturers therefore describe large, high-refresh-rate AMOLED displays, with Nothing’s listed diagonal 0.07 inches larger.

The brightness figures are not a controlled comparison: Nothing advertises up to 3,000 nits peak brightness, while Samsung lists up to 1,200 nits HBM. “Peak” and “HBM” refer to different manufacturer-stated measurement contexts; without matched test conditions, the numbers do not show which screen is brighter in typical use. Consider hands-on viewing in the lighting conditions where you use a phone rather than choosing on the peak figure alone.
Speed and gaming: no independent winner established
Samsung identifies the Galaxy A36 5G’s processor as Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. The official Nothing page content available for this comparison did not establish a processor specification, and no independent benchmark or gaming test was established for either phone. A processor name alone cannot support a claim that one phone feels faster, handles demanding games better, or stays cooler. If those are deciding factors, look for testing of the exact regional models and memory configurations you are considering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cameras: compare photos, not megapixel totals
Samsung specifies a 50 MP main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), an 8 MP ultra-wide camera, a 5 MP macro camera and a 12 MP front camera. The retrieved Nothing product-page content did not provide a complete camera specification, and there are no comparable sample results here. The Samsung hardware list is useful for understanding its camera options, but megapixel counts do not establish image quality. Compare photos from both phones in daylight, indoor light and night scenes—especially from the focal lengths you use most—before making a camera-led decision.

Software support
Samsung’s US launch announcement says the Galaxy A36 5G receives six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and six years of security updates. That is Samsung’s manufacturer policy statement; it should not be read as a promise that every regional model will receive each update on an identical schedule. A comparable duration commitment for the Phone (3a) was not established by the official material reviewed.
Water and dust protection
Samsung rates the Galaxy A36 5G IP67. Samsung’s stated test conditions are immersion in up to one metre of fresh water for up to 30 minutes, and the company advises against beach or pool use. The official Nothing material reviewed did not establish a comparable Phone (3a) rating, so do not assume the two have equivalent protection.
Price difference: check current local prices, not the launch figure
Samsung’s US announcement listed the Galaxy A36 5G at a starting price of $399.99 when it launched in 2025. This is a historical US launch price, not a current sale price. The Nothing India product page reviewed did not provide a usable price for this comparison, so the available information cannot establish a current price difference or which phone is better value.
For a fair comparison, check listings in your country for the same RAM and storage capacity, and verify whether the seller includes a charger and offers the regional model you need. Samsung UK’s product page, for example, describes an 8 GB/256 GB configuration; that example should not be generalized to every market. Current stock and regional features should be confirmed with the seller.

Quick Recap
Which phone should you buy?
- Choose the Galaxy A36 5G if Samsung’s stated six-generation OS/One UI upgrade and six-year security-update commitment, or its IP67 rating, is more important to you than an unverified price advantage.
- Consider the Phone (3a) if its local price and exact configuration suit your budget, and you have checked the camera results, regional support and protection details that matter to you. Its listed 6.77-inch screen is slightly larger, but size alone is not a reason to assume it is the better phone.
- Wait to decide if your choice depends on speed, camera quality, battery life or a price gap. The evidence here does not provide matched independent tests or current like-for-like prices for those judgments.
