If your Nothing Phone (3) is losing charge unusually quickly, start with Settings > Battery > Battery Usage. Identify the app or service at the top before changing several settings at once. A recent system update, 5G coverage, cold temperatures, high screen brightness, navigation, streaming, hotspot use, or a hot phone can all increase consumption. The steps below help you separate those causes, apply reversible fixes, and recognize when the phone needs service.
Start with Battery Usage, not a factory reset
Nothing’s support instructions use Settings > Battery > Battery Usage to show which apps or programs consumed power. Menu names can vary with Nothing OS versions, so use the closest Battery or Power screen your phone displays. Record the top entries and their percentages before making changes; a single snapshot is a clue, not proof that an app or system service is defective.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery Usage.
- Check the period covered and note the largest consumers, including screen, mobile network, and system entries.
- Tap an unusually high app to review the controls offered by your software version. Restrict background activity or reduce use only when the app’s behavior matches your symptoms.
- Use the phone normally for another cycle and compare the list. A change that persists across comparable periods is more meaningful than one spike.
Nothing documents this diagnostic path in its battery-drop and power-consumption guidance. Google also recommends restricting apps with high battery use and enabling Adaptive Battery where the option is available in your Android build.

Match the pattern to a likely cause
| What you see | What it may indicate | First action |
|---|---|---|
| One newly installed or updated app dominates Battery Usage | Foreground activity, background sync, location access, or a bug in that app | Review its battery and background controls, update it, and compare usage after normal use |
| Screen is the largest consumer | High brightness, long timeout, always-on display activity, or heavy viewing | Lower brightness, shorten timeout, and use dark theme where practical |
| Mobile network is unusually high | Weak coverage, 5G operation, or frequent switching between network conditions | Test a 4G/LTE preference if your carrier and software expose that option |
| Drain began immediately after an OS update | Temporary post-update indexing, optimization, or software behavior | Restart, charge overnight, and observe for two to three days of ordinary use |
| Charge falls while the phone is idle and warm | Heat, a stuck process, poor ventilation, or a hardware problem | Remove heat sources, restart, and seek service if unexplained heating continues |
Do not infer a failing battery from the name of a single system process. Confirm the pattern over time and correlate it with what the phone was doing.

If one app is responsible
Review background behavior
Open the high-use app’s entry from Battery Usage and inspect whichever controls your build provides. Restrict background activity for an app that does not need continuous syncing, or leave it unrestricted when delayed notifications and updates are unacceptable. Android’s battery guidance recommends limiting high-use apps and using Adaptive Battery when offered.
Check recently changed apps
Ask whether the drain started after installing or updating an app. Temporarily stop using that app, install any available update, and compare Battery Usage over a similar period. A navigation, video, social, cloud-sync, or game app can legitimately consume a large share while active; the important distinction is whether it continues using power when you are not using it.
Do not disable essential system components casually
System entries can represent networking, synchronization, security, or the display rather than a single faulty component. Avoid force-stopping or uninstalling a system package solely because it appears in the list. Use the usage screen to form a testable hypothesis, then change one reversible setting at a time.

After a system update
Nothing says power use can rise temporarily while the phone integrates and optimizes new software. Its support guidance says consumption may recover after two to three days of normal use; that is manufacturer guidance, not a guaranteed deadline for every device. After the screen has been off, restart the phone and charge it overnight, then monitor it through ordinary use.
To check for another release, open Settings > System > System updates. If an update you expect is unavailable or installation repeatedly fails, Nothing directs users to its Support Centre.

5G and weak coverage
Nothing identifies 5G as a possible reason for higher consumption because the phone can keep 4G active as well. To test the network effect, open Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Preferred Network Type and select a 4G/LTE option if your device and carrier show one. Labels and available choices differ by software version and carrier. Compare battery use in the same locations before deciding whether the change is worthwhile; 4G may reduce power demand but can affect peak speeds or 5G availability.
Cold conditions
Nothing lists cold temperatures among circumstances that can increase consumption. A temporary drop in percentage or shorter endurance in cold weather does not by itself prove permanent battery damage. Keep the phone within its recommended operating range and compare behavior again at normal room temperature.
Apply display and everyday-use reductions
Google recommends reducing the demands that keep the screen, processor, radios, and location hardware active. These changes are reversible and are most useful when Battery Usage shows display or intensive apps near the top.
- Lower brightness: use automatic brightness or a lower manual level, especially indoors.
- Shorten screen timeout: choose the shortest delay that still suits how you read and work.
- Use dark theme: enable it where you prefer; it can reduce display demand in some situations and may be easier on your eyes at night.
- Reduce sustained streaming and gaming: video, music, graphics-heavy games, and long camera sessions keep several components busy at once.
- Limit navigation and GPS: turn-by-turn navigation and location tracking can remain active while the screen is on or in the background.
- Avoid prolonged hotspot use: tethering keeps the cellular radio and Wi-Fi transmitter active for connected devices.
- Prefer Wi-Fi when practical: Google notes that Wi-Fi may use less battery than mobile data in some conditions, although the result depends on signal quality and activity.
- Turn off Bluetooth or Location only when unnecessary: do this when no connected accessory or app needs the function, rather than as a blanket rule.
These steps extend a charge; they do not identify or repair a particular defective app. Recheck Battery Usage after each meaningful change so you know which adjustment helped.
Use Battery Saver for a low-charge situation
Battery Saver is a temporary way to reduce background work when you need the remaining charge to last. Google warns that it can delay some apps, features, and network activity. Notifications, synchronization, and location-dependent functions may therefore arrive later or behave differently until you turn it off.

- Open Quick Settings by swiping down from the top of the display.
- Tap the Battery Saver tile if it is present. If it is not visible, edit the Quick Settings tiles or look under Settings > Battery; the exact path depends on your software version.
- Use it when the phone is low or during a period when background activity is less important, then disable it when you need normal syncing and performance.
A third-party-hosted copy of the Nothing Phone (3) guide says the Battery Saver tile is available in Quick Settings and that a low-power notification appears below 20 percent. Treat those menu details as model-specific guide information, not as a promise that every current OS build uses the same wording. The guide identifies the Phone (3)’s battery as 5500mAh and says it should last a whole day of medium to heavy use; capacity and that statement are specifications or guidance, not a guaranteed runtime for your apps, signal, temperature, or software. The guide copy is available as a Nothing Phone (3) User Guide PDF.
Keep the phone within a safe temperature range
The Phone (3) guide identifies 0°C to 35°C as the ideal usage temperature and warns that extreme temperatures can affect performance and battery wear. Google states that a battery drains much faster when it is hot, even when the phone is not in use. A warm phone during intensive gaming or charging can therefore lose charge faster than an idle phone at room temperature.
- Move the phone out of direct sun, a hot car, or an enclosed case that traps heat.
- Stop demanding games, recording, navigation, or hotspot use if the device becomes unusually hot.
- Charge on a hard, ventilated surface rather than under bedding or clothing.
- Avoid using demanding apps while charging. Nothing notes that charging itself creates heat and that fast charging can increase it.
Nothing’s Power & Charging guidance recommends its charger and cable and avoiding hot, poorly ventilated charging conditions. That advice addresses safe and reliable charging; it does not establish a replacement charger as a cure for ordinary battery discharge.

Nothing’s live Nothing OS 5.0 page lists a Phone (3) rollout beginning October 12 and says timing is indicative and may be phased by region or carrier. It lists stable build Metroid-V4.1-260814-1733 as a required build for beta entry. Those page details can change, so rely on the build actually offered under Settings > System > System updates rather than assuming your phone has the same release.
The same page warns: “Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta is pre-release software and may contain bugs or affect device stability, battery life and performance.” Do not install a beta solely to solve battery drain. Pre-release software can introduce a different problem and makes diagnosis harder. If you are already running a beta, note that status when contacting support and consider the stable update offered to your device.

A historical Android Central report described reduced heating and battery drain in certain scenarios after a Nothing OS 3.5 update. That report does not show that your current drain has the same cause or that installing a later version will resolve it.
Run a controlled one-day comparison
When the cause is unclear, avoid changing everything at once. A simple comparison makes the Battery Usage screen more useful:
- Record the battery percentage, top Battery Usage entries, network mode, and whether the phone is cool or warm.
- Keep your normal work and commute for one period. Do not compare a gaming day with a standby day.
- For the next comparable period, change one factor: for example, use 4G instead of 5G, restrict one high-use app, or lower brightness.
- Record screen time, calls, streaming, navigation, hotspot use, and charging interruptions.
- Compare the top entries and the percentage change. Restore the setting if it causes an unacceptable loss of convenience or breaks a feature you need.
This method cannot produce a universal screen-on-time promise. It tells you whether a change affects your own signal, apps, and habits under similar conditions.
When heating or drain needs professional help
Turn the phone off for a while and restart it if it becomes inexplicably hot, as Nothing advises. Remove it from heat and stop demanding activity first. If the phone continues heating when it is idle, repeatedly shuts down, swells, smells unusual, or loses charge rapidly despite ordinary use, stop troubleshooting with settings and contact Nothing customer service or a designated repair center. Persistent heat is a safety and hardware concern, not merely an inconvenience.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before contacting support, capture the software version, update status, Battery Usage list, approximate temperature and network mode, and the time the behavior began. Mention any recent drop, liquid exposure, beta software, or charging incident. Do not open the phone or attempt a battery replacement yourself.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Factory-resetting before diagnosis: a reset erases data but will not fix weak coverage, heat, or a legitimate high-use workload. Back up and reserve it for a support-directed step after simpler tests.
- Installing a “battery booster” app: another continuously running app can add background work and obscure the original cause.
- Disabling every background process: this can break notifications, synchronization, security checks, or location features without addressing the drain.
- Judging the battery from one percentage drop: temperature, signal changes, and a burst of screen activity can distort a short observation.
- Changing charger hardware to solve discharge: use compatible, recommended charging equipment for charging problems, but do not treat a new charger as a proven remedy for a phone that simply loses charge during use.
- Installing beta software as a fix: Nothing explicitly warns that beta software can affect stability, battery life, and performance.
A practical decision checklist
- One app is high: review its background controls, update it, and compare another normal-use period.
- The screen is high: lower brightness, shorten timeout, reduce prolonged viewing, and consider dark theme.
- Mobile network is high: test 4G/LTE where available, especially in weak 5G coverage.
- The problem started after an update: restart, charge overnight, and allow two to three days of normal use before judging the result.
- The phone is hot: stop intensive use, ventilate it, and escalate persistent unexplained heating.
- No clear cause appears: document Battery Usage and software details and contact Nothing support rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
The most reliable first move remains the same: inspect Settings > Battery > Battery Usage, connect the top consumer to something that changed, and test one reversible adjustment at a time. The Phone (3)’s 5500mAh specification does not guarantee identical endurance for every owner’s software, signal, temperature, and workload.
