If your Nothing Phone loses charge faster just after installing Nothing OS 5.0, do not assume the battery has failed. Nothing describes OS 5.0 as an open beta/pre-release and warns that it can affect stability, battery life and performance. The company also says a phone may temporarily become warmer and consume more power after the update. Its practical recovery advice is to restart, charge with the screen off for a whole night, and use the phone normally for 2–3 days. That period is guidance, not a guarantee.
While those days pass, use Settings > Battery > Battery usage to find the actual source of the drain. The largest entry usually points you toward the right fix: display use calls for brightness and timeout changes; mobile-network use calls for a 4G/LTE test; one app calls for background restrictions or removal; and unexplained Android-system use, heat or charging faults may require Nothing support.
Why Nothing OS 5.0 can drain the battery temporarily
Nothing’s official Nothing OS 5.0 information identifies the software as an open beta/pre-release. In that channel, the company warns that the build may contain bugs or affect device stability, battery life and performance. It also states that the phone may temporarily become warmer and consume more power after updating, with consumption expected to return to normal shortly after installation.

Nothing’s battery guidance gives a more useful routine than simply waiting: restart the phone, leave the screen off while it charges for a whole night, then allow 2–3 days of normal use for power consumption to recover. Nothing does not present this as a guaranteed deadline, and it has not published a battery-drain percentage or laboratory runtime for OS 5.0. If the phone is still losing charge unusually quickly after that period, treat the problem as something to diagnose rather than as normal post-update behavior.

Keep the distinction between a short-lived post-update change and a persistent fault. A temporary increase immediately after installation can settle during the stated window. Drain that remains severe, is accompanied by heat when the phone is idle, or occurs with charging interruptions deserves the checks below.
Find the biggest battery consumer before changing settings
Battery-saving changes work best when they target the component actually using energy. Start with the built-in report instead of switching off several features at once.
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Look at the largest percentage or time entry and note whether it is the screen, mobile network, a named app, or Android system.
- Record the period covered by the report and whether the phone was used actively or left idle. This gives you a before-and-after reference when you test one change.
- Apply one relevant intervention, use the phone normally, and check the same screen again. Changing everything at once makes it difficult to identify the cause and may disable features you still need.
When the screen is the largest entry
A high screen figure means display time, brightness or both are prominent in the measured period. Reduce brightness, enable adaptive brightness, shorten screen timeout, and consider Dark theme. These changes reduce display demand without disabling mobile data or notifications. Exact setting names and locations can vary by Nothing model and Android version, so use the Settings search field if a label is not in the expected place.
When mobile network is the largest entry
Test the radio connection before blaming an app. Nothing says 5G can keep 4G active at the same time and increase consumption. A weak Wi‑Fi or SIM signal can also make the phone transmit harder. Move to a location with stronger coverage, compare Wi‑Fi and cellular use, and run the reversible 4G/LTE test described below.
When one app dominates
Think about when the app was installed or updated and whether it was used during the period shown. Restrict its background activity, remove it if it is not essential, and then check the report again. A restriction can delay synchronization or notifications, so test important messaging, work and security apps after changing it.

When Android system dominates
First complete the restart, overnight charge and 2–3-day normal-use window. Install the latest Nothing OS build available for your phone and update Play Store apps; Google notes that updates can fix battery bugs. If Android system remains the largest unexplained consumer and the phone is hot or charging abnormally, move to the escalation steps rather than repeatedly toggling settings.
Give the update a fair 2–3-day optimization window
Use this sequence immediately after OS 5.0 installation or a restart prompted by troubleshooting:

- Charge overnight with the screen off. Use a suitable charger and cable, keep ventilation clear, and do not play games or watch video while charging.
- Use the phone normally for 2–3 days. Do not run an artificial battery test or repeatedly reboot; ordinary calls, messaging, browsing and your usual apps provide a more useful comparison.
- Check Battery usage again. Compare the leading category with the note you made before the overnight charge.
- Continue only if the pattern remains abnormal. Choose the fix that matches the leading consumer instead of assuming the update itself is still optimizing.
The 2–3-day figure comes from Nothing’s battery guidance and is not a promise that every phone will return to its previous behavior on the same day. Network conditions, workload, temperature and an individual app can keep consumption high even after the software has settled.
Test 4G/LTE when 5G or a weak signal is involved
High mobile-network usage is a reason to compare 5G with 4G/LTE, not proof that 5G is defective. Nothing says 5G may keep 4G active simultaneously, increasing consumption. In areas with marginal coverage, the phone may also spend more energy maintaining a connection.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Preferred network type.
- Select the available 4G/LTE option for the affected SIM. The exact wording can differ by model, carrier and Android version.
- Use the phone in the same places and for similar tasks you used before. Compare the mobile-network entry in Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Keep 4G/LTE selected only if the lower consumption is worth giving up 5G speed or coverage in your area. You can switch back at any time.
This is a reversible diagnostic, not a universal recommendation. If 4G/LTE makes little difference, investigate signal quality, background apps, screen time and workload. Turn off hotspot, Bluetooth, NFC or location when you are not using them; each radio or location service is another potential source of activity, especially in areas with poor reception.

Control background activity without breaking essential notifications
Background work can continue while the screen is off. A newly added or heavily used app is the most actionable suspect when it appears near the top of Battery usage.
- Restrict background activity for the app identified in the report, using the app’s battery setting or the app-management controls available on your model.
- Uninstall a recently added app if you do not need it, then observe the battery report during comparable use.
- Leave essential communication, authentication and safety apps unrestricted if delayed messages or alerts would be a problem.
- Turn off synchronization, hotspot, Bluetooth, NFC or location only when you do not need the associated feature.
- Use Battery Saver for periods when endurance matters more than instant background work. Nothing and Android describe Battery Saver as limiting background activity and location while the screen is off, so delayed updates are an expected trade-off.
Do not repeatedly force-stop every app. That can make normal use less convenient without identifying the process responsible. Battery usage data and a one-change-at-a-time comparison provide a cleaner diagnosis.
Reduce display demand with reversible settings
The display is often a large consumer because it combines active screen time with brightness. Start with changes that preserve the phone’s basic functions:
- Lower brightness manually when the environment allows it.
- Enable Adaptive brightness so the phone can adjust output to ambient light.
- Shorten Screen timeout so an unattended display turns off sooner.
- Enable Dark theme if you prefer it; it can reduce display demand in suitable interfaces while also making the screen more comfortable in low light.
- Enable Battery Saver when you need longer runtime and can accept reduced background work.
Labels and menu locations vary across Nothing models and Android versions. Use Settings search for “brightness,” “screen timeout,” “dark theme” and “Battery Saver” if the path differs. Recheck Battery usage after ordinary use; the goal is to confirm that screen consumption falls without creating an unacceptable usability or notification problem.
Account for demanding workloads and heat
Games, long video playback, navigation, camera sessions and streaming keep several components active at once: the display, processor, radios and speakers. A rapid percentage change during one of these workloads does not establish a software fault. Compare a normal-use period with a period dominated by one demanding task, and note whether the phone cools when that task ends.

Heat itself accelerates battery drain and can indicate that the phone is working harder than expected. Nothing says its phones are generally suitable for ambient use between 0–35°C and recommends charging between 15–35°C. Those are operating guidance ranges, not a promise of identical battery behavior at every temperature.
- Remove a thick case temporarily if the phone is hot.
- Keep vents and the charging area clear; do not cover the phone with bedding or other insulating material.
- Avoid gaming or watching video while charging.
- Move the phone to a cooler, shaded place and let it return toward normal temperature before continuing a demanding task.
- Check whether heat appears only during a known workload or also while the phone is idle with the screen off.
If the phone becomes hot without an obvious workload, remains unusually warm after the diagnostic steps, or repeatedly stops charging, treat that as an escalation signal rather than something to solve by lowering brightness alone.
Check the charger, cable and charging conditions
Use the official charger and cable supplied for your phone, or a qualified compatible charger and cable. Inspect both for damage, loose connectors or contamination and ensure the plug is firmly seated. A replacement USB‑C PD charger and cable is a sensible accessory purchase only when the existing equipment is missing, damaged or incompatible; it is not a guaranteed software fix for Nothing OS 5.0 drain.
Charge within Nothing’s recommended 15–35°C charging range, keep ventilation clear, and avoid intensive use while charging. Note whether charging stops repeatedly, proceeds unusually slowly, or works only when the cable is held at a particular angle. Those observations help support staff distinguish a software-use pattern from a charging accessory or hardware problem.

Use a simple decision path for persistent drain
- Still inside the 2–3-day window? Complete the restart, overnight charge and normal-use period unless the phone is dangerously hot or cannot charge normally.
- Battery usage names a clear consumer? Apply the matching screen, network, app or workload fix and reassess.
- Mobile network dominates? Test 4G/LTE, improve signal conditions where possible, and disable radios you are not using.
- An app dominates? Restrict its background activity or uninstall it if appropriate, then verify notifications and synchronization.
- Screen dominates? Lower brightness, enable adaptive brightness, shorten timeout and consider Dark theme.
- Android system remains high? Update Nothing OS and Play Store apps, restart, and check again during normal use.
- Heat or charging is abnormal? Stop intensive use while charging, check temperature and accessories, back up data, and contact Nothing or a designated repair center.
This path separates reversible tests from destructive actions. Do not erase the phone merely because the first battery report looks unusual.
When to back up and contact Nothing
Back up your photos, messages, contacts and other important data before any destructive troubleshooting. Contact Nothing customer support or a designated repair center if the phone remains abnormally hot without an obvious workload, repeatedly stops charging, or continues to drain unusually after the diagnostic sequence and the 2–3-day post-update period.
A factory reset is a last software step because it erases data. Google’s guidance is to back up first. If you choose to reset, do it only after recording the evidence from Battery usage and confirming that charger, cable, temperature, network and app checks have not explained the behavior. A reset cannot repair a damaged battery, charging port or other hardware fault, and persistent symptoms after a clean setup warrant professional assessment.
What a successful fix should look like
Success is not a specific battery percentage because no official OS 5.0 runtime or drain benchmark has been published. Instead, the leading Battery usage category should make sense for what you did, the phone should cool when demanding work ends, and charging should proceed consistently with suitable equipment. Keep the setting change only when its endurance improvement is worth the feature trade-off, such as 4G in place of 5G or slower background synchronization.
