Choose the pair whose ear hook and stabilizer fit your ears first. Nothing Ear (open) and the original Shokz OpenFit (model T910) are both open-ear true wireless earbuds, so neither is an in-ear, sealed design. The main differences are the physical support structure, control method, advertised battery figures, charging-case water treatment, and how each handles two connected devices.
Nothing Ear (open) is the better fit for someone who prefers pinch controls, wants a case that Nothing rates IP54, or values the longer advertised battery allowance. The original OpenFit is the more suitable choice if its flexible hook feels better on your ear, you prefer touch controls, or you specifically want Shokz’s app-based MultiPoint Pairing. Neither is an automatic winner: there is no independent head-to-head comfort, sound, call, leakage, durability, or battery test establishing that one performs better for every listener.
Quick answer: which one should you buy?
Use this order of priorities when deciding:
- Fit: Try the triangular Nothing support structure and the original OpenFit hook if possible. Their stated weights are close, but shape and pressure distribution determine comfort more than a two-tenths-of-a-gram difference.
- Controls: Nothing uses pinch gestures on the earbud structure. Original OpenFit uses touchpads with double-tap and press-and-hold actions.
- Battery: Nothing publishes the higher vendor figures, although the companies use different test descriptions and the numbers are not a controlled comparison.
- Water exposure: Both earbuds are rated IP54. Nothing also lists IP54 for its case; Shokz’s T910 specification sheet says the original OpenFit case is not waterproof.
- Two-device use: Nothing calls its feature Dual Connection, while Shokz calls its feature MultiPoint Pairing. In both cases, setup and switching can depend on the phone, computer, operating system, and companion app.
- Price: No verified, same-country current price comparison is available here. Check the exact model, local warranty, retailer, and stock immediately before buying.
If the two products cost about the same where you live, make the decision on fit and controls rather than treating the advertised battery difference as proof of longer real-world use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMake sure you are comparing the right Shokz model
This comparison is specifically between Nothing Ear (open) and the original Shokz OpenFit, model T910. It is not a comparison with OpenFit 2, OpenFit 2+, or another later Shokz product. Regional Shokz pages can promote or redirect to newer generations, so confirm the product title, photographs, and model number before placing an order.

The distinction matters because later models can change controls, battery ratings, water protection, case design, and app behavior. A listing that simply says “OpenFit” without identifying T910 may not be the product described in this article.

The table combines manufacturer specifications and support information. It does not establish which earbuds sound better, leak less audio, stay in place during exercise, or last longer in everyday use.
Fit and wearing design: the decision that matters most
How Nothing Ear (open) stays in place
Nothing uses a triangular stabilizing structure together with a flexible ear hook made with nickel-titanium wire. The design supports the earbud without inserting a sealed tip into the ear canal. The company lists 8.1 g for each bud.
That triangular support may suit someone who likes a defined brace against the outer ear. It can also feel different from a simple hook because more of the structure contacts the ear. Whether that contact is reassuring or distracting depends on the shape of your concha and the position of your glasses.
How the original OpenFit stays in place
The original OpenFit uses a flexible ear hook and separates the earbud from the battery portion. Shokz lists 8.3 g per earbud and describes the hook as ergonomic and flexible. Its published design research used scans of ear data, but that manufacturer claim cannot guarantee a comfortable fit for an individual listener.
A flexible hook can distribute pressure over the outer ear instead of relying on an in-ear seal. The trade-off is that the hook may interact with eyeglass arms, helmet straps, masks, earrings, or thick hair. The same accessory that feels stable while walking may shift when you lie down or turn your head quickly.
How to choose when you cannot try both
- Choose Nothing’s style if you prefer a triangular stabilizer and the idea of pinch gestures appeals to you.
- Choose the original OpenFit style if a slim, flexible hook and separated battery section better match your ear.
- If you wear glasses, test both with the frames you actually use; neither manufacturer promises universal compatibility.
- For exercise, prioritize whether the hook remains stable during your movements rather than relying on the near-identical stated weights.
- Buy from a seller with a clear return policy when possible, because comfort cannot be inferred reliably from specifications.
Battery life and charging: useful figures with important limits
Nothing publishes up to 8 hours of continuous AAC music from the earbuds and up to 30 hours when the case is included. Its support information describes fully charged devices, 50 percent volume, a 25°C environment, default features, and laboratory playback. Under those stated conditions, a 10-minute charge can provide up to 2 hours of earbud use.

The original OpenFit T910 specification sheet lists up to 7 hours on a charge and up to 28 hours with the charging case. Shokz’s regional product page says a 5-minute charge can provide up to 1 hour of listening. The sheet does not provide an equivalent temperature, volume, codec, or feature configuration for those headline figures.
Do not treat the one-hour difference in earbud claims or the two-hour difference in case totals as a measured advantage. Battery life changes with listening volume, phone calls, Bluetooth interference, voice assistants, multipoint activity, and the age of the battery. A laptop connection, frequent switching, or call-heavy day can produce a different result from a continuous music test.
Which battery setup suits your routine?
- Long single-day listening: Nothing has the higher stated maximum, subject to its test conditions.
- Short charging breaks: Both manufacturers advertise a rapid top-up, but their time-to-listening claims use different intervals and are not directly comparable.
- Frequent case charging: The case totals are vendor estimates; compare how often you can practically recharge at work, in a bag, or overnight.
- Calls and mixed use: Expect less than a continuous music claim because calls and microphones consume power.
Water resistance: the earbuds and cases are not treated the same
Both products list IP54 protection for the earbuds. That rating addresses limited dust ingress and water splashes under standardized conditions; it is not an invitation to swim, shower, bathe, or submerge the hardware.
Nothing states that both the earbuds and case are IP54 under IEC 60529. It also warns against wearing Ear (open) while showering, bathing, or swimming, and advises drying the earbuds fully before use or placing them in the case after rain or sweat. Nothing notes that resistance can decline through normal wear.

For the original OpenFit, the T910 specification sheet lists IP54 for the earbuds but explicitly says the charging case is not waterproof. Keep the case protected even if the earbuds have encountered light splashes. A wet earbud should be dried before it is returned to any case, regardless of the case’s published rating.
Controls: pinch gestures versus touchpads
Nothing Ear (open)
Nothing describes pinch controls and customizable actions. A pinch-style interface is intended to reduce accidental taps from hair, hats, or brushing against the outer ear because the gesture requires pressure between designated parts of the structure. The exact actions available depend on the current firmware and companion software, so verify them in the device’s control settings after pairing.
Original Shokz OpenFit
The original OpenFit uses touchpads. Shokz documents double-tap and press-and-hold gestures, with customization through the Shokz app. Touch controls can be convenient when you cannot squeeze the hook, but accidental activation is possible if you repeatedly touch the earbud while adjusting it.

Two-device connection and app features
Nothing Dual Connection
Nothing Ear (open) supports Dual Connection and can remember up to eight devices, according to Nothing’s product and support information. The practical benefit is the ability to keep a phone and computer available without repeatedly deleting and re-pairing them.
Nothing cautions that behavior can differ between devices and use cases. Some laptops may switch more slowly. A connection that works smoothly between two modern phones may therefore behave differently with an older computer, a work-managed laptop, or a device with aggressive Bluetooth power management.
Shokz MultiPoint Pairing
Shokz advertises MultiPoint Pairing through the Shokz app. The app also provides EQ modes and customizable controls. MultiPoint is useful when you alternate between a phone and a computer, but the app requirement means setup is part of the ownership experience rather than an entirely device-independent feature.
A safe setup sequence for either pair
- Charge the earbuds and case before pairing.
- On the first device, open the operating system’s Bluetooth settings and select the exact product name shown for your model.
- Complete the initial connection, then install or open the applicable companion app if you want control customization, EQ, or two-device features.
- Enable Dual Connection or MultiPoint Pairing in the app where the option is provided; follow the app’s prompts for adding the second device.
- Play audio from each device separately and test pausing, answering a call, and returning to music before relying on the setup for work.
- If switching is slow, disconnect other nearby Bluetooth accessories temporarily and test each device alone. Some laptop switching behavior is device-dependent.
Because menus and firmware change, use the current on-screen instructions for the exact model rather than following a pairing sequence written for a newer generation.

Open-ear earbuds leave the ear canal unsealed, allowing awareness of some surrounding sound while you listen. That can be useful for walking, office work, or situations where you need to hear a conversation without removing an earbud. It also means the listening experience differs from sealed in-ear headphones: outside noise can compete with music, and people nearby may hear some of your playback depending on volume, fit, and surroundings.
The original OpenFit uses an air-conduction transducer, according to the T910 specification sheet. Nothing’s supplied product details identify its open-ear structure but do not provide an independent comparative measurement of frequency response, maximum output, sound leakage, call quality, or noise handling. No published evidence here proves that either model sounds clearer, louder, or leaks less than the other.

Price, warranty, and value: how to compare fairly
A current, like-for-like local price has not been verified for either product. Do not use an old launch price or a foreign-market listing as a current value verdict. Currency, taxes, retailer warranty, availability, and generation can change the result.
At checkout, compare these items side by side:
- Exact product name and model number, especially T910 for the original OpenFit.
- Country-specific price including tax and delivery.
- Warranty length, seller reputation, and return window for fit-related dissatisfaction.
- Whether the box includes the charging case and cable; Shokz states that a charging cable is included with the original OpenFit.
- Replacement or support availability in your region.
- Whether the listing is new, refurbished, or an imported regional version.
If the price gap is small, buy based on the hook design and controls you are most likely to tolerate for several hours. If one model is substantially discounted, confirm that the discount is not for OpenFit 2, a different regional package, or an older listing with unclear battery condition.
Which model fits common buying situations?
For office workers switching between a phone and laptop
Both products have a two-device workflow. Nothing’s Dual Connection remembers up to eight devices, while Shokz’s MultiPoint Pairing is configured through its app. Choose the one whose app and switching behavior you can test with your actual work computer. If your laptop is known to switch slowly, allow extra time and keep a wired or built-in fallback for important calls.
For people who dislike in-ear pressure
Both are open-ear designs and avoid a sealed ear-tip fit. The decisive question is whether Nothing’s triangular brace or Shokz’s flexible hook creates less pressure on your outer ear. Neither stated weight nor a manufacturer’s ergonomic description can answer that for your anatomy.
For light outdoor use
Both earbuds carry IP54 ratings, but neither should be treated as swimming or shower equipment. Nothing’s explicit drying guidance and its listed IP54 case may be reassuring if you often encounter rain or sweat; the original OpenFit case should be kept dry because Shokz says it is not waterproof.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For listeners who frequently adjust their earbuds
Nothing’s pinch interaction may be preferable if touching the earbud tends to trigger controls accidentally. Shokz’s double-tap and press-and-hold touchpad actions may be preferable if you want to avoid squeezing the support structure. Try each gesture with the earbud positioned as you would wear it.
Care and troubleshooting
After rain or exercise
- Remove the earbuds and wipe away visible moisture.
- Let them dry completely before putting them into a charging case.
- Keep the Shokz case away from water; do not interpret the earbud IP54 rating as case protection.
- Inspect charging contacts if charging does not begin after the earbuds are dry.
One earbud will not connect
- Confirm both earbuds and the case have charge.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on at the source device.
- Remove an old or duplicate entry for the same model, then pair again using the current model name.
- Temporarily disconnect the second device while establishing the first connection.
- Use the companion app to check for available firmware or reset instructions specific to your generation.
Two-device switching is unreliable
- Test each device individually to identify whether the problem is limited to a phone, tablet, or laptop.
- Close media apps that continue playing in the background.
- Keep the devices within normal Bluetooth range and reduce nearby wireless interference.
- Re-enable Dual Connection or MultiPoint Pairing after a fresh first-device pairing.
- If a laptop still switches slowly, use manual device selection for calls rather than assuming the earbuds have failed.
Controls trigger accidentally
Reposition the earbuds without touching the control area, then reduce or remap gestures in the applicable app. With Nothing, check the pinch-control assignments; with original OpenFit, check double-tap and press-and-hold assignments. Firmware or app updates can change available options, so record your preferred mapping after an update.
Bottom line
Nothing Ear (open) is the stronger specification-led choice if you want the higher advertised battery figures, pinch controls, and a case that Nothing lists as IP54. The original Shokz OpenFit is the better match if its flexible hook fits you more securely, you prefer touchpad gestures, or Shokz’s app-based MultiPoint Pairing suits your devices. Since comfort and current price are not established by the published specifications, verify the exact generation, local warranty, and return policy before buying.
