Choose Nothing Ear (open) if you want music while keeping your ears physically open to nearby conversation, traffic, colleagues, or announcements. Choose Nothing Ear if you want an in-ear seal, active noise cancellation (ANC), and a more isolated listening experience. Neither is an evidence-backed universal winner for sound quality or comfort: the available specifications establish how each product is designed, not how every listener will perceive its fit or audio.

The practical decision is therefore about listening context first, then battery behavior, features, durability, and regional availability.

The short answer

These are not two versions of the same earbud design. Nothing Ear (open) places a speaker near the ear rather than sealing the ear canal. Its silicone hook holds the earbud in position while the open construction is intended to preserve awareness of the background. Nothing Ear is a conventional in-ear model. Its eartips create a seal, and its feature set centers on ANC, transparency mode, in-ear detection, and higher-end codec and equalizer support.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Pick Nothing Ear (open) for commuting on foot or by bicycle where local rules permit, office listening where you must hear colleagues, and casual listening at home without blocking household sounds.
  • Pick Nothing Ear for flights, trains, noisy offices, focused work, and music sessions where reducing outside sound matters more than hearing every nearby event.
  • Do not use either model as a substitute for situational judgment. An open design can make environmental sounds easier to hear, but it does not guarantee that you will notice every hazard. Noise cancellation can reduce awareness of alarms, announcements, vehicles, and people trying to get your attention.

Comfort and sound quality remain personal variables. The manufacturer pages provide product design and laboratory specifications; they do not establish an independent winner for ear fatigue, bass response, call quality, or real-world runtime.

The battery figures are manufacturer claims with stated test conditions, not a controlled comparison between the two products. The modes are also not equivalent: Nothing Ear (open) is given one headline figure, while Nothing Ear has separate results with ANC and transparency enabled or disabled.

Wearing design: open hook versus in-ear seal

How Nothing Ear (open) sits

The open model uses a lightweight form and a silicone hook. The speaker sits by the ear rather than plugging the ear canal. This arrangement is intended for situations in which the background matters as much as the music: you can continue a conversation, hear a doorbell, or remain aware of ordinary activity without removing an earbud.

An open earbud does not create passive isolation. Nearby sound reaches your ear directly, and loud surroundings can compete with music. Raising the volume to overcome that competition can reduce the practical benefit of an open design, so use a level that leaves you able to respond to what is happening around you.

How Nothing Ear fits

Nothing Ear uses an in-ear fit. The eartip seal supports isolation and gives ANC a physical foundation. Nothing also lists in-ear detection, so playback behavior can respond when an earbud is removed. Transparency mode provides a way to bring outside sound back into the listening experience without abandoning the in-ear form.

A sealed fit can feel more secure for some people and intrusive for others. Ear-canal shape, eartip size, glasses, jaw movement, and sensitivity to pressure all affect the result. The published specifications do not establish that one model is more comfortable for everyone.

Noise control and awareness

When the open design is the advantage

Choose the open model when hearing your surroundings is part of the task rather than an interruption. Examples include working in a shared office, walking through a neighborhood, waiting for announcements, and listening at home while monitoring children or appliances. You still need to look around and follow local safety rules; open construction is not a safety certification.

When ANC is the advantage

Choose Nothing Ear when the goal is to reduce a steady background such as aircraft cabin noise, rail travel, air-conditioning, or office chatter. Nothing lists smart/adaptive ANC with a maximum reduction claim of up to 45 dB. That number is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee that every sound will be reduced by 45 dB in your ears. Fit, frequency, seal, and the selected mode affect the result.

ANC is not the same as silence. Sudden voices, high-frequency sounds, and nearby hazards can remain audible, and transparency mode intentionally allows outside sound through. If you need to hear announcements or traffic, pause playback or use an appropriate awareness mode rather than assuming ANC will handle it.

Audio hardware and listening features

On paper, Nothing Ear has the broader audio feature set. Its listed hardware includes an 11 mm ceramic driver. It supports LDAC and LHDC 5.0 codecs, an advanced equalizer, and a personal sound profile. These features can matter if your phone and listening service support the relevant codecs or if you want to tune the sound to your hearing preferences.

Codec support does not automatically produce better sound. The phone, operating system, source quality, wireless conditions, equalizer settings, and the earbud seal all influence what you hear. A personal profile is also a customization tool, not an independent measurement of fidelity.

Nothing Ear (open) is specified primarily by its open sound technology and physical design. The available material does not provide a like-for-like driver, codec, or listening test that would justify declaring it inferior or superior in sound quality. Open playback will naturally interact more with the room and surrounding noise, so the same recording can seem different from a sealed in-ear presentation even when the source is unchanged.

Battery life: read the conditions, not just the headline

Nothing reports both products at 25°C, fully charged, using AAC at 50% volume with default features. Actual runtime changes with volume, codec, calls, temperature, wireless conditions, and feature use. Treat every figure below as an “up to” laboratory result.

Mode Nothing Ear (open) Nothing Ear
Earbuds only Up to 8 hours of music Up to 8.5 hours with ANC off; up to 5.2 hours with ANC on or transparency mode
Including charging case Up to 30 hours Up to 40.5 hours with ANC off; up to 24 hours with ANC on or transparency mode

The figures suggest two different planning questions. If you routinely leave ANC off, Nothing Ear has the longer stated total. If you use ANC or transparency continuously, its stated total is lower than the ANC-off figure. Nothing Ear (open) does not have an ANC-mode comparison in the cited specification, so its headline cannot be treated as a directly matched test against either Nothing Ear mode.

What this means for a typical day

  • For short listening sessions with frequent access to a case, both products provide a substantial single-charge claim under the laboratory setup.
  • For long travel, check whether you intend to use ANC continuously; the relevant Nothing Ear estimate is its ANC/transparency result, not the ANC-off headline.
  • Use the case as part of your charging routine and expect less runtime at higher volume or in very cold or hot conditions.

Which model fits common situations?

Shared offices and hybrid work

Nothing Ear (open) is the more natural match when colleagues may speak to you without warning. You can keep a soundtrack running while retaining direct access to room sound. Nothing Ear is preferable when you have a defined focus block and want ANC to reduce continuous office noise; use transparency or remove an earbud when you need to participate.

Walking, cycling, and outdoor errands

The open model is designed around background awareness, which can be useful outdoors. It does not remove the need for visual checks, attention at crossings, or compliance with local rules about headphone use while cycling or driving. In-ear ANC can be useful in a controlled, non-traffic setting, but it is a poor default when you must hear vehicles, warnings, or other people.

Flights and trains

Nothing Ear’s sealed fit and ANC address the constant low-frequency noise common in transport. Battery planning should use the ANC-on or transparency figure if that is how you will listen. Nothing Ear (open) leaves the transport noise in the room, so it is better suited to travelers who need to monitor announcements or prefer not to seal their ears.

Home listening

Choose based on whether you want shared awareness. The open model lets you hear household activity without pausing. Nothing Ear provides a more private, isolated session when you are reading, exercising indoors, or concentrating.

Exercise

Neither specification establishes a universal winner for stability or comfort during exercise. The silicone hook may appeal to listeners who dislike an in-ear seal, while the sealed model may feel more isolated or secure to others. Try the fit with the movements you actually make, and keep the IP limits in mind.

Water and dust resistance: IP54 is not waterproof

Both earbuds are rated IP54 under IEC 60529. That rating describes protection against limited dust ingress and water splashes under defined test conditions; it does not make either product suitable for submersion. Nothing warns that resistance can decline with age and use, and advises against showering, bathing, or swimming with the earbuds.

Dry the earbuds completely before using them again or putting them in a charging case. Moisture trapped in the contacts or case can create charging and corrosion problems even when the original exposure was minor. The cited EU page lists the Nothing Ear case at IP55; the cited US Ear (open) page does not state a case rating, so do not assume the cases have identical protection.

Price and availability are regional snapshots

Nothing’s US page for Ear (open) displayed a $99 price and Sold out status when accessed. Nothing’s EU page for Ear displayed €129. Those observations come from different regions, currencies, pages, and availability states, so they are not a like-for-like price comparison. Taxes, promotions, inventory, and regional configurations can change.

Before buying, verify the product page for your country, confirm that the exact model is in stock, and check the return policy. A lower displayed price is not useful if the page cannot ship to you or if the available configuration is different from the one whose specifications you read.

A practical decision process

  1. Identify your non-negotiable. If you must hear the room while listening, start with Nothing Ear (open). If reducing outside sound is the priority, start with Nothing Ear.
  2. Decide whether you will use a seal. People who dislike ear-canal pressure should treat the open hook as the first option; people who need passive isolation should treat the in-ear model as the first option.
  3. Match the battery mode. For Nothing Ear, decide whether ANC or transparency will be on most of the time and use the corresponding laboratory estimate. Do not compare its ANC-off total with the open model as though both were measured in identical modes.
  4. Check device support. LDAC and LHDC 5.0 only matter when your phone and software support them. Otherwise, the codec advantage may not be available in your setup.
  5. Check your environment. Frequent travel and steady noise favor ANC. Frequent conversations, announcements, and outdoor awareness favor open playback.
  6. Confirm regional stock and price. Use the local Nothing page, because the observed US and EU listings cannot establish what you will pay or whether either model is available.
  7. Plan for moisture. Keep either model away from showers, baths, and swimming, and dry the earbuds before charging.

What the specifications cannot tell you

The available product information does not include independent measurements comparing frequency response, maximum safe listening level, microphone performance, call quality, comfort over several hours, seal consistency, or real-world battery drain. It also does not establish whether one design stays in place better during a particular sport or head shape.

That is why a specification-based choice should remain conditional. The open model’s design clearly serves awareness; the in-ear model’s design clearly serves isolation and feature control. Your ears, phone, surroundings, and listening habits determine whether those design goals feel successful in practice.

Bottom line

Buy Nothing Ear (open) when staying connected to your surroundings is the defining requirement. Buy Nothing Ear when you want an in-ear seal, ANC, and the richer set of listed audio customization features for focused or noisy environments. Compare the battery mode you will actually use, treat IP54 as splash resistance rather than waterproofing, and verify local price and stock before ordering. The evidence supports that context-based choice; it does not support calling one model universally better for sound or comfort.
