Short answer: Nothing Ear earbuds are water- and dust-resistant, not waterproof; their IP54 earbud rating is unsuitable for showers or swimming. The 2024 Nothing Ear supports two-device multipoint under the name Dual Connection, its case accepts wireless charging up to 2.5 W, and it supports AAC, SBC, LDAC and (according to Nothing’s comparison table) LHDC 5.0. LDAC works only with compatible Android phones and is not available on iPhone, which uses AAC.
What the IP54 rating actually protects against
Nothing’s current support documentation rates the Nothing Ear earbuds IP54 under IEC 60529. In that code, the first digit indicates protection from solid particles and the second indicates protection from water. A rating of 5 for solids means dust is not completely excluded, but enough protection is provided for normal use. A rating of 4 for water means resistance to splashing from any direction under the standard’s test conditions. It does not certify immersion, jets of water or continuous exposure.
That is why “water-resistant” is accurate while “waterproof” is not. IP54 is intended to reduce risk from situations such as sweat, light rain or an accidental splash. It is not a permission slip for bathing, showering, pool use or open-water swimming.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan you shower, bathe or swim with Nothing Ear?
No. Nothing specifically advises against showering, bathing and swimming with the earbuds. A shower combines running water, pressure, heat and soap; swimming adds prolonged immersion and often chlorinated or salt water. Those conditions exceed what an IP54 splash-resistance rating is designed to cover.

- Powerful 11 mm driver: We've made our driver even more compact. With double the power than Ear (2), Ear (a) delivers an even deeper bass performance. The extra space gives sound waves more room to vibrate. With two new vents, airflow is improved inside the bud. For less distortion and richer overall clarity
- Smart Active Noise Cancellation: Up to 45 dB,Nothing Ear (a) automatically checks for noise leakage between the earbud and your ear canal, then applies more noise cancellation to make up for it. So you receive the best possible noise cancellation. Happens every time you put them in. So you can go from quiet rooms to busy streets without hearing a thing (other than what's playing)
- Clear Voice Technology: Clear as day. Ear (a) isolates your voice from everyday distractions so calls on-the-go feel like face-to-face conversations. With a new talk mic and extra airway on the stem for wind to pass through, we’ve reduced interference by 60% compared to Ear (2)
- Long Playtime, Fast Charging: For speedy power-ups, Ear (a) can Fast Charge for 10 minutes and deliver 10 hours of music playback (with ANC turned off). Compared to Ear (2), Ear (a) can deliver 40.5% more non-stop play time on a single charge. Or pop your earbuds back in the case and stretch listening time to over 42.5 hours (with ANC turned off)
- More Performance: Low Lag mode,Reduced audio lag for better gaming. Stay connected to two devices at the same time. Play music on your laptop then seamlessly switch to answer a call on your phone. Effortless. Adaptive ANC,Next-level escapism. Switch between 3 levels of noise cancellation. Or let Ear (a) take control. By selecting 'Adaptive' in the Nothing X app, Ear (a) automatically applies the right level of noise cancellation according to your surroundings in real time.
Do not deliberately rinse the earbuds, wear them in a sauna, or leave them in wet clothing. If rain or sweat reaches them, wipe the earbuds with a dry, lint-free cloth. Do not put them in the charging case until every contact, microphone opening and exterior surface is completely dry. Charging wet contacts can cause corrosion or an electrical fault.
Does the protection last forever?
No. Nothing warns that protection can decrease with wear. Repeated drops, scratches, opening the housing, blocked seals, exposure to chemicals and ordinary aging can all reduce resistance. Liquid damage is not covered by Nothing’s warranty, so an IP rating should be treated as a risk-reduction specification rather than insurance against water accidents.
What about the charging case?
The 2024 Nothing Ear case is listed as IP55, while the earbuds are IP54. The higher case splash rating still does not make the case suitable for immersion or shower use. Keep the case closed and dry, and never store wet earbuds inside it. The more affordable Ear (a) has an IPX2 case, which indicates only limited dripping-water protection and no stated solid-particle rating. Ear (2) has an IP55 case and IP54 earbuds.
Does Nothing Ear have multipoint?
Yes. Nothing calls its multipoint-style function Dual Connection. The 2024 Ear can remain connected to two devices, such as a laptop and a phone. Nothing describes the intended use as listening on the laptop and then switching to answer a call on the phone.

Dual Connection is two-device standby, not simultaneous playback. The earbuds and their companion software decide which source is active. Music, video, calls and system sounds can compete for focus, so a phone notification or call may interrupt laptop audio. Bluetooth behavior also varies by operating system and by how each device handles media priority.
How to set up Dual Connection
- Pair Nothing Ear with the first device using the normal Bluetooth pairing process.
- Install or open the Nothing X app and select the connected earbuds.
- Open the earbuds’ connection or device settings and enable Dual Connection. The exact placement can change with the app version.
- Pair the second phone, tablet or computer when Nothing X prompts you, or use the second-device pairing control shown in the app.
- Test a call and media session on each device. If switching is unreliable, pause media on the first device before starting playback on the second.
Two devices can stay connected, but the feature does not guarantee instant switching in every application. Video calls, proprietary media players and operating-system audio policies can hold the Bluetooth connection until their session is paused or ended.
When should you turn Dual Connection off?
Turn it off when you need the highest possible Bluetooth bitrate or the most predictable connection to one source. Nothing’s LDAC guidance recommends disabling Dual Connection when a higher bitrate needs additional bandwidth. Single-device mode can also reduce unwanted interruptions during gaming, calls or high-resolution music playback.

“Up to 2.5 W” is a maximum input figure, not a promise that every pad will deliver that rate. Coil alignment, the pad’s output, temperature and the case’s charge level affect actual charging speed. Wired USB-C charging remains the fallback when a wireless pad is unavailable or when you need the most consistent result.
Which Nothing earbud models support wireless charging?
| Model | Case charging | Earbud/case ingress rating | Two-device connection | Codec information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nothing Ear (2024) | Wireless charging up to 2.5 W; USB-C; reverse charging from compatible devices such as Phone (2) | IP54 earbuds / IP55 case | Dual Connection | AAC, SBC, LDAC; Nothing’s comparison table also lists LHDC 5.0 |
| Nothing Ear (a) | Wired USB-C only; no wireless charging | IP54 earbuds / IPX2 case | Dual Connection | AAC, SBC and LDAC |
| Nothing Ear (2) | Qi-certified wireless charging up to 2.5 W; USB-C | IP54 earbuds / IP55 case | Dual Connection | LHDC 5.0 support is documented in its product materials |
The wireless-charging specification applies to the case, not to the individual earbuds. Earbuds charge through the case’s internal contacts and cannot be placed directly on a pad.
What codecs does Nothing Ear use?
A Bluetooth codec determines how audio is encoded before transmission to the earbuds. Nothing lists AAC, SBC and LDAC for Nothing Ear, and its comparison material also lists LHDC 5.0. Ear (a) is listed with AAC, SBC and LDAC. The codec a listener actually gets depends on the source device, operating system, Bluetooth profile and the codec selected in software.
| Codec | What it means in practice | Platform qualification |
|---|---|---|
| SBC | Baseline Bluetooth codec with broad compatibility. | Normally available on Bluetooth audio sources that support standard A2DP. |
| AAC | Higher-quality option commonly used by phones and tablets, with efficiency that depends on the device implementation. | Nothing states iOS devices support AAC as their Bluetooth high-quality codec. |
| LDAC | High-bitrate codec with selectable quality; Nothing documents 24-bit depth, 96 kHz sampling and up to 990 kbps. | Requires compatible phone hardware, operating-system support and activation in phone settings and Nothing X. Not supported on iPhone. |
| LHDC 5.0 | Listed by Nothing for Ear and documented for Ear (2) in product materials. | Availability depends on the transmitting phone and its software; a supported earbud alone cannot enable it. |
Codec names are capability claims, not guarantees of a particular streaming service’s quality. A service may deliver a compressed source, and a phone may fall back to SBC or AAC when signal conditions, bandwidth or compatibility prevent the selected high-quality codec.

Does Nothing Ear support LDAC on iPhone?
No. Nothing’s support guidance says iOS devices support the AAC Bluetooth high-quality codec and are temporarily unable to use LDAC or other high-quality Bluetooth codecs. Pairing Nothing Ear with an iPhone still works for calls and music, but the Bluetooth link uses AAC rather than LDAC.
This limitation is imposed by the source device’s operating system, not by a setting on the earbuds. Installing Nothing X on an iPhone cannot add LDAC transmission that iOS does not provide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to enable LDAC on a compatible Android phone
LDAC is available only when both the Android phone and Nothing Ear support it. Nothing documents up to 24-bit/96 kHz and up to 990 kbps, but those are the codec’s supported maximums; the phone may choose a lower rate to maintain stability.
- Pair Nothing Ear with the Android phone and open the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Open the connected Nothing Ear entry and choose the HD-audio or codec option if the phone exposes one. On many Android versions, additional codec controls are in Developer options.
- In Developer options, select LDAC as the Bluetooth audio codec when the option is available. Menu names and locations vary by manufacturer.
- Open Nothing X, select the earbuds and turn on High-quality audio.
- Choose Adaptive playback quality when offered. This lets the connection reduce bitrate if radio conditions deteriorate.
- For the highest bitrate, turn off Dual Connection and keep the phone close to the earbuds. Start playback, then verify that the phone still reports LDAC rather than a fallback codec.
If LDAC disappears from the menu, the phone may not support it, the earbuds may not be connected through Nothing X, or another Bluetooth setting may have forced a fallback. Reconnect both earbuds, update the phone and Nothing X, and check the codec again. Do not assume that a “high-quality audio” toggle proves LDAC is active; confirm the codec shown by the phone.

Choosing among Ear, Ear (a) and Ear (2)
Choose Nothing Ear (2024) when wireless charging and codec flexibility matter
Nothing Ear is the model to choose if you want a 2.5 W wireless-charging case, reverse charging from a compatible phone, Dual Connection and the broadest codec list in Nothing’s comparison material: AAC, SBC, LDAC and LHDC 5.0. Its IP54 earbuds and IP55 case still require the same dry-use precautions as the other models.
Choose Ear (a) when wired charging is acceptable
Ear (a) retains IP54 earbuds, Dual Connection and AAC, SBC and LDAC support, but its case charges through USB-C rather than wirelessly and is rated IPX2. It suits a buyer who does not need a charging pad and is willing to accept the lower case ingress rating.
Choose Ear (2) for its documented Qi case support
Ear (2) has IP54 earbuds, an IP55 case and Qi-certified wireless charging up to 2.5 W. Its product materials document Dual Connection and LHDC 5.0 support. Confirm availability, firmware and retailer specifications because older stock can differ from current listings.

The earbuds were exposed to rain or sweat
- Remove both earbuds from your ears and wipe them with a dry, lint-free cloth.
- Leave the earbuds outside the case until they are completely dry.
- Do not use heat, compressed air or sharp objects to clear the openings.
- If charging, pairing or audio problems remain after drying, stop using the earbuds and contact Nothing support; liquid damage is not covered by warranty.
Dual Connection keeps switching unexpectedly
- Pause media on the inactive device before starting playback on the other.
- Close an unused call or video-conference session that may be holding Bluetooth audio focus.
- Disable Dual Connection temporarily if you need a single, uninterrupted source.
- Forget and re-pair one device if the earbuds remain attached to an old laptop or tablet.
LDAC is unavailable or keeps reverting
- Verify that the phone, Android version and Nothing Ear all support LDAC.
- Enable LDAC in the phone’s Bluetooth or Developer options and enable High-quality audio in Nothing X.
- Turn off Dual Connection and use Adaptive playback quality if the link is unstable.
- Move closer to the phone and reduce nearby wireless obstructions; LDAC’s highest rate needs more bandwidth than SBC or AAC.
The wireless case is not charging
- Center the case on the charging pad’s active coil and remove thick or magnetic cases from the pad.
- Check that the pad is powered and that the case’s indicator responds.
- Clean and dry the case, then try USB-C charging to separate a pad-alignment problem from a case fault.
- For reverse charging, confirm that the phone supports reverse wireless charging and place the case correctly on the phone’s charging area.
Bottom line for buyers
Nothing Ear is splash-resistant, not swim- or shower-safe. Its practical advantages are Dual Connection for two-device use, a 2.5 W wireless case and support for AAC, SBC, LDAC and listed LHDC 5.0, while codec choice remains dependent on the source platform. Android users with LDAC-capable phones can enable the higher-bitrate mode through phone settings and Nothing X; iPhone users should expect AAC. If wireless charging is essential, select Ear or Ear (2), not Ear (a).
