Short answer: Nothing Ear is worth considering when you want distinctive design, Smart ANC, LHDC 5.0 and a well-equipped companion app at a competitive live regional price. It is a less convincing choice if your priority is the longest possible noise-cancelling runtime or proven class-leading isolation. This guide covers the flagship Nothing Ear sold through Nothing’s storefront—not Ear (a), Ear (2), Ear (3) or Ear (open).
The deciding factors are fit, your usual noise environment, phone compatibility and the price available in your country. Nothing’s feature list is strong, but the published battery result is a controlled laboratory figure and the available evidence does not establish category-leading ANC.
What Nothing Ear is, and what this guide evaluates
Nothing Ear is a flagship true-wireless in-ear model. The official product page highlights a Smart ANC algorithm and LHDC 5.0 codec support. Those features matter only when they solve a problem you actually have: ANC must reduce the sounds around you, and LHDC must be supported by your phone and listening service to provide a benefit.
This buying guide evaluates the areas that determine whether the earbuds are a good purchase: noise cancellation in different environments, battery life with ANC enabled, sound and codec compatibility, fit and comfort, calls, controls, charging, durability, warranty and the live price in your region. The evidence confirms the advertised features, but it does not provide an independent isolation ranking, a long-term battery-degradation rate or a failure-rate statistic.

Key specifications and claims
| Item | What is established | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Product covered | Flagship Nothing Ear on Nothing’s storefront | Do not assume specifications from Ear (a), Ear (2), Ear (3) or Ear (open) apply. |
| Noise control | Smart ANC algorithm listed by Nothing | Effectiveness depends on ear-tip seal, the frequency of the noise, wind and firmware; ANC does not promise silence. |
| Codec support | LHDC 5.0 listed by Nothing | Useful primarily with compatible Android phones and services. Check your phone’s exact LHDC support before paying more for the feature. |
| ANC-on endurance | 4 hours for the earbuds; 18 hours including the case | These are Nothing’s laboratory figures, not a guaranteed result at every volume, codec or feature setting. |
| Battery test setup | Fully charged earbuds and case, AAC playback at 50% volume, 25°C and default settings | Higher volume, LHDC, calls, multipoint or other active features can reduce practical runtime. |
| Regional price | Varies by market and changes over time | Use the current price and stock shown for your country at the time you order; there is no reliable universal dollar or pound figure. |

Is the price fair?
There is no single worldwide price to use as a permanent value benchmark. Taxes, currency, promotions and retailer stock change by country, so judge the live regional price rather than an old launch figure or a price quoted for another market.
At the price shown when you shop, compare the complete package rather than one headline specification:

A lower street price can make the compromises reasonable. At a higher price, competing earbuds may offer longer ANC endurance, a more secure fit or stronger measured isolation. Check the return policy before opening the box if your ears are difficult to fit; seal quality affects both bass and noise reduction.
Features that matter in daily use
Smart ANC
Nothing lists Smart ANC for Ear. In practice, an adaptive noise-cancelling system listens to outside sound through microphones and adjusts its cancellation signal. The result varies with the seal around your ear canal, the shape of the earbud, the frequency of the noise and the firmware version.
Expect the greatest potential benefit against steady low-frequency sounds such as engine or rail rumble. Irregular voices, sudden clatter and high-frequency sounds are harder for any in-ear ANC system to remove completely. A loose tip can let sound leak around the earbud, reducing passive isolation and giving the ANC system less to work with.

Microsoft Swift Pair, LED charging status, Pinch controls, Find My Earbuds, Water resistance IP54 buds / IP55 case, Google Fast Pair, Ear Tip Fit Test supported.
LHDC 5.0
LHDC 5.0 is a higher-bandwidth Bluetooth codec. It can preserve more audio data than the basic codec path when the phone, operating system and listening app all support it. Compatibility is not universal: many iPhones do not offer LHDC, and Android support depends on the handset and its software.
Before treating LHDC as a reason to buy, open your phone manufacturer’s specification page or Bluetooth developer settings and confirm that LHDC is available. You also need music mastered well enough for the additional data to matter. With ordinary compressed streams, a stable connection and a good seal generally make a larger audible difference than the codec label.
App controls and equalization
Use the companion app to check firmware, choose noise-control modes and inspect the controls available for your phone. Look for adjustable ANC or transparency behavior, remappable touch controls and an equalizer. Exact menus can change with app and firmware releases, so verify the current options after pairing rather than relying on an older screenshot.
How good is the ANC?
The available documentation confirms Smart ANC but does not support calling it the best in its class. Judge it against your own sound environment using the following checks.
Low-frequency transport noise
On a train, bus or aircraft, enable ANC while seated and listen for the continuous engine or wheel rumble. Effective cancellation should make that steady low-frequency layer less prominent, although it will not remove vibration transmitted through your body or seat. Compare the same track with ANC off at a safe volume; raising the volume to mask noise is not a substitute for cancellation.

Voices and office sounds
Speech contains changing midrange frequencies that are more difficult to cancel than a constant hum. ANC may lower the level of nearby conversations without making them disappear. If voices remain distracting, a better ear-tip seal may help as much as a different ANC setting.

Wind and outdoor use
Wind striking the microphones can create turbulence or rumble. Test the earbuds while walking rather than assuming an indoor result will carry outdoors. If wind noise becomes worse with ANC enabled, try the transparency or normal mode and check whether the app offers a wind-related setting.
Transparency naturalness
Transparency Mode feeds outside sound through the microphones so you can hear announcements or speak without removing the earbuds. Listen for a hollow or amplified quality, abrupt switching and a noticeable delay. Natural transparency is particularly important if you plan to wear the earbuds around traffic or at work.
Battery life with ANC enabled
Nothing Support states: “ANC ON/Transparency Mode: 4 hours buds only, 18 hours buds + case.” Those figures come from Nothing’s support documentation: battery-life article.
Nothing tested fully charged earbuds and case at 25°C, using AAC playback at 50% volume with other features at their default settings. That is a controlled manufacturer result. Your runtime can be lower at a higher volume, with LHDC active, during calls, in very hot or cold conditions, or when other power-consuming features are enabled. Bluetooth connection quality and repeated reconnection attempts can also affect consumption.
Planning around the claim
- For a long journey, carry the case and top up whenever you are not listening; do not plan on the laboratory maximum if ANC will run continuously at high volume.
- If you use Transparency Mode instead of ANC, treat the same published endurance category as the relevant reference because Nothing groups those modes together.
- Track your own first few charge cycles. Note volume, codec, ANC mode and call time so you can distinguish normal variation from a charging problem.
- If one earbud drains much faster, clean the charging contacts, reseat both buds in the case and confirm that both are charging before contacting support.
Fit, comfort and the seal
Ear-tip fit is not a cosmetic detail. A complete seal provides passive isolation, improves bass response and gives ANC a stable acoustic environment. A tip that is too small leaks sound; one that is too large can create pressure and fatigue.
- Start with the pre-installed tips and play a bass-rich track at a low, safe volume.
- Try each included size on both ears; left and right canals often need different sizes.
- Choose the smallest tip that remains sealed when you speak, chew and turn your head.
- Walk for at least 10 minutes with ANC on and off. Check for pressure, slipping and a blocked-ear sensation.
- Use the retailer’s return window if you cannot obtain a stable seal. Do not judge ANC or sound from a poor fit.
Comfort is personal and cannot be inferred from the product name or a specification sheet. If you wear earbuds for many hours, a slightly weaker ANC mode with a comfortable seal may be preferable to maximum cancellation that causes fatigue.

Sound and codec decisions
Nothing’s LHDC support gives compatible Android listeners an option beyond the basic Bluetooth codec path. It does not automatically make the earbuds sound better. Tuning, fit, source quality and equalizer settings determine what you hear.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the same recordings when comparing codecs. Disable loudness normalization, keep the volume matched and listen for vocal clarity, bass control and treble fatigue. If you cannot reliably identify a difference, prioritize connection stability and battery life over a high-bandwidth mode.
When LHDC is unavailable, the earbuds can still play through the standard codec supported by your phone. Confirm that the app does not silently switch modes when you move out of range; a stable connection is more useful than a mode that repeatedly drops.
Calls, controls, charging and protection: verify before buying
The supplied product evidence does not establish a universal call-quality score, charging specification, water-resistance rating or warranty term for every region. Retail listings and regional warranty pages can differ. Confirm these items on the page that will fulfill your order.
| Check | How to test or verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Call quality | Read the microphone and call claims for your region, then test a call outdoors and in a quiet room during the return period. | Wind and traffic can affect microphone pickup even when music sounds clear. |
| Touch or stem controls | Review the current app control map and test play, pause, track, volume and ANC switching. | Controls you cannot trigger reliably become a daily annoyance. |
| Wireless or fast charging | Check the exact regional specification and whether a charger or cable is included. | Do not assume a charging feature from another model in the range. |
| Water resistance | Read the official rating and exclusions; verify whether the case has a different rating. | Sweat, rain and submersion have different risks. |
| Warranty and returns | Confirm coverage length, country restrictions and the seller’s return deadline before purchase. | Fit problems and battery faults are easier to resolve inside the stated return window. |
A practical setup and test procedure
- Charge the case and both earbuds fully. Confirm that each bud shows a charging indication when placed in its slot.
- Install the current Nothing companion app from your phone’s official app store and allow Bluetooth permissions.
- Pair the earbuds from the phone’s Bluetooth menu, then complete any firmware update offered by the app.
- Fit the tips using the seal procedure above before judging sound or ANC.
- Test Normal, ANC and Transparency Mode in a quiet room, then repeat on your usual commute or walk.
- If your Android phone supports LHDC, enable it in the app or Bluetooth settings and watch for connection stability.
- Make a short call in a quiet room and outdoors. Ask the other person whether your voice remains clear.
- Record the battery percentage after a known listening period. Repeat at your normal volume instead of relying only on the laboratory claim.
- Save the receipt, warranty details and return deadline until you are satisfied with fit, calls and endurance.

A newer model in the same family should not be used as a substitute for measurements of this Ear. For example, TechRadar’s review of Nothing Ear (3) discusses Bluetooth 5.4, LDAC and solid ANC while also criticizing its battery life; those observations do not establish the specifications or endurance of the 2024 Nothing Ear. Who should buy Nothing Ear?
- Design-conscious listeners: You value Nothing’s distinctive hardware and software approach and are comfortable checking regional support details.
- Android users with LHDC: Your phone and preferred services support LHDC 5.0, so the codec is available rather than merely advertised.
- Commuters with realistic ANC expectations: You mainly want to reduce steady low-frequency transport noise and will test the fit.
- Value shoppers: The live regional price is competitive against alternatives offering similar ANC, app controls and codec support.
Who should look elsewhere?
- Maximum-endurance travelers: You need the longest possible continuous ANC session and cannot recharge during the day.
- Buyers seeking proven class-leading isolation: The available evidence confirms Smart ANC but does not establish a category-leading result.
- Phones without LHDC: You would be paying for a codec your device cannot use.
- People who cannot obtain a seal: Persistent looseness, pressure or discomfort will undermine sound and ANC regardless of the feature list.
Troubleshooting common problems
ANC seems weak
Try another tip size, clean the earbud microphones and run the test against steady low-frequency noise. Check that ANC—not Normal or Transparency Mode—is selected in the app. Update firmware before deciding that the hardware is defective.
Battery is below expectations
Compare your volume, codec, call time and temperature with Nothing’s test conditions. Confirm that the case and both buds reach full charge, clean the contacts and disable features you do not need. A single short session is not enough to diagnose degradation.
LHDC will not appear
Confirm that your phone model and operating system support LHDC, that the earbuds are updated and that the feature is enabled in the Bluetooth or companion-app settings. If the option remains unavailable, use the standard codec; do not install unofficial firmware.
One earbud will not charge or connect
Remove debris from the contact points, reseat the bud until its charging indicator appears, then forget and re-pair the device. If the imbalance persists after a full charge and reset, use the seller’s warranty or return process.
Final verdict
Nothing Ear is a sensible purchase when its live regional price, distinctive design, Smart ANC and LHDC 5.0 match your priorities. The battery claim is useful but should be read as a controlled manufacturer result: ANC or Transparency Mode is rated for 4 hours in the earbuds and 18 hours with the case under specified AAC, 50%-volume, 25°C conditions. Test the seal, your commute, calls and phone compatibility during the return period. If those checks pass and you do not need class-leading isolation or maximum ANC endurance, the feature set can justify the price.
