The Nothing Ear (3a) is a sensible $99-list-price buy if you like punchy bass or are willing to reduce it in the Nothing X app. Its default tuning is conspicuously bass-heavy: SoundGuys, RTINGS and Tom’s Guide each found the low end could overwhelm the balance, though reviewers differed on how much that mattered. The key question is whether that energetic sound is what you want—or something you’ll immediately try to undo.
How do the Nothing Ear (3a) sound?
Out of the box, expect prominent bass rather than a neutral presentation. RTINGS describes the default tuning as very bass-heavy, while Tom’s Guide found the low end over-amplified for its reviewer’s taste. Tom’s Guide also noted clear treble and upper mids, but said busy tracks could lose midrange separation beneath the bass emphasis.
Nothing says its 12 mm driver is larger than the one in the Ear (a), making bass “up to 5 dB louder.” That is Nothing’s comparative claim, not an independent measurement. If you enjoy a weighty, energetic low end, it may be a selling point; if you want balanced sound, plan to adjust the EQ.

Can you reduce the bass?
Yes. The Nothing X app provides EQ controls. Tom’s Guide says reducing the bass with the app’s 8-band parametric EQ made the sound more balanced. RTINGS also praises the Ear (3a)’s detailed parametric EQ, and SoundGuys found its Balanced and More Treble presets scored above 4.6/5 in its MDAQS model. That score is a prediction for a simulated group of about 200 people, not a direct listener-panel result. EQ gives you room to tune the sound, but it cannot guarantee that the result will suit every ear or preference.
#1 Best Overall
- Powerful 11 mm driver: We've made our driver even more compact. With double the power than Ear (2), Ear (a) delivers an even deeper bass performance. The extra space gives sound waves more room to vibrate. With two new vents, airflow is improved inside the bud. For less distortion and richer overall clarity
- Smart Active Noise Cancellation: Up to 45 dB,Nothing Ear (a) automatically checks for noise leakage between the earbud and your ear canal, then applies more noise cancellation to make up for it. So you receive the best possible noise cancellation. Happens every time you put them in. So you can go from quiet rooms to busy streets without hearing a thing (other than what's playing)
- Clear Voice Technology: Clear as day. Ear (a) isolates your voice from everyday distractions so calls on-the-go feel like face-to-face conversations. With a new talk mic and extra airway on the stem for wind to pass through, we’ve reduced interference by 60% compared to Ear (2)
- Long Playtime, Fast Charging: For speedy power-ups, Ear (a) can Fast Charge for 10 minutes and deliver 10 hours of music playback (with ANC turned off). Compared to Ear (2), Ear (a) can deliver 40.5% more non-stop play time on a single charge. Or pop your earbuds back in the case and stretch listening time to over 42.5 hours (with ANC turned off)
- More Performance: Low Lag mode,Reduced audio lag for better gaming. Stay connected to two devices at the same time. Play music on your laptop then seamlessly switch to answer a call on your phone. Effortless. Adaptive ANC,Next-level escapism. Switch between 3 levels of noise cancellation. Or let Ear (a) take control. By selecting 'Adaptive' in the Nothing X app, Ear (a) automatically applies the right level of noise cancellation according to your surroundings in real time.
How well do the Ear (3a) cancel noise?
Nothing advertises up to 45 dB of wideband active noise cancellation (ANC). That manufacturer figure is not directly comparable to SoundGuys’ test result: SoundGuys measured an average 80.9% reduction in perceived loudness across its test samples. It tested the earbuds over four days, using a company-provided review unit and a separately purchased unit.
RTINGS’ comparisons suggest the Ear (3a) blocks more noise than the Nothing Ear (a), but the Anker Soundcore Space A40 has stronger ANC than the Ear (3a). So the Nothing model’s advertised ANC is a useful feature, not a reason to assume it leads every alternative.
Rank #2

What do you get for $99?
At its $99 US list-price framing, the Ear (3a) combines 12 mm drivers with ANC, Bluetooth 6.0, LDAC, multipoint connections, static spatial audio and Nothing’s call and media capture features. Nothing also lists Hi-Res Audio support. The US product page snapshot available for this review showed $79 against a $99 price; the UK page showed £89 against £99. Those are changeable market-specific page prices, not a guarantee of today’s checkout price.
Multipoint lets the earbuds connect to two devices. Tom’s Guide reports using it between a phone and laptop, with feature controls handled through the Nothing X app. This is useful if you regularly switch between those devices without manually disconnecting and reconnecting.

Battery life depends on ANC
Nothing advertises up to 10 hours of earbud playback with ANC off and up to 6 hours with ANC on; with the case included, its respective claims are up to 42 and 25 hours. SoundGuys recorded about 10 hours in repeated ANC-off testing, broadly consistent with Nothing’s earbud-only claim. That result should not be read as a test of playback with ANC enabled or of total use including the case.
Recording features call for judgment
Nothing describes call and media capture as part of the feature set. Tom’s Guide raised privacy concerns about recording. Consider what you intend to capture and whether people nearby would reasonably expect to be recorded before using those features. The available evidence does not establish jurisdiction-specific recording rules.

Which earbuds should you choose?
| Option | Best reason to consider it | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing Ear (3a) | 12 mm driver, adjustable parametric EQ, ANC, multipoint and recording features at a $99 US list-price framing. | Its default bass can overwhelm the mids for some listeners; the US page snapshot showed a discount to $79, so check the current price. |
| Nothing Ear (a) | RTINGS says its default tuning is more balanced without EQ adjustments. | In RTINGS’ comparison, the Ear (3a) offers more extensive parametric EQ and stronger noise blocking. |
| Anker Soundcore Space A40 | RTINGS cites stronger ANC, longer battery life, auto-off and wireless charging. | RTINGS says the Ear (3a) sits more stably in the ear and has more detailed parametric EQ. |
| CMF Buds Pro 2 | RTINGS describes a broadly comparable bass-heavy tuning and battery profile. | RTINGS favors the Ear (3a) for comfort, pinch controls and EQ detail; the CMF has a case dial and more natural speech recording in quiet conditions. |
| Nothing Ear (3) | RTINGS cites improved microphones and wireless charging. | It costs more; RTINGS says the Ear (3a) offers longer continuous battery life and comparable ANC. |
These are comparisons reported by RTINGS, not a new head-to-head test. SoundGuys considers the Ear (3a) a sensible $99 purchase after EQ adjustment. RTINGS puts more emphasis on the Space A40 for shoppers prioritizing ANC and battery life, while Tom’s Guide flags the recording feature as a concern. The right choice depends on which tradeoff matters most to you.
