The Nothing Ear (3a) is a capable, feature-rich budget wireless earbud, but it is not a no-compromise pick. Its standout strengths are adjustable sound, improved noise cancellation over the Ear (a), and call and media capture features. The default sound is very bass-forward, and independent tests report shorter battery life than Nothing’s headline 42-hour total suggests.

What the Nothing Ear (3a) offers

Nothing’s US product page lists a 12 mm driver, active noise cancellation (ANC), and call and media capture. It also advertises up to 42 hours of battery life with the case. That last figure is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent playback result. Nothing’s US product page displayed $79 with $99 crossed out when accessed; TechRadar identifies $99 / £99 as the US and UK launch price and AU$179 in Australia. Treat those prices as time- and region-sensitive rather than a guarantee of today’s offer. TechRadar’s review

How the Ear (3a) sounds

Out of the box, the tuning leans heavily toward bass. RTINGS describes the stock sound as very bass-heavy, and TechRadar likewise finds it overly bassy. WIRED, by contrast, highlights good detail, solid bass extension, and an energetic presentation, while noting that listeners may want to adjust the balance. RTINGS’ review WIRED’s review

Use the equalizer to tailor the default profile

The companion app provides an eight-band equalizer, giving you a way to reduce the bass emphasis or shape the sound to your preference. That flexibility is a meaningful strength: the default tuning may not suit everyone, but you are not locked into it. The available review evidence establishes the EQ controls, not a single best setting, so treat adjustment as personal rather than a required preset.

How effective is the noise cancellation?

The Ear (3a)’s ANC is a meaningful improvement over the earlier Ear (a), though it does not block everything. In SoundGuys’ 2026 test, the Ear (3a) achieved nearly 81% average noise reduction, compared with about 57% for the Ear (a). Those are results from SoundGuys’ testing, not a promise for every listener, fit, environment, or setting. SoundGuys also notes that higher-frequency chatter can still get through. SoundGuys’ Ear (3a) and Ear (a) comparison

For a counterpoint, RTINGS says the Anker Soundcore Space A40 provides stronger ANC. The Ear (3a)’s generational improvement is useful, but it does not make it the strongest noise-cancelling option in every comparison.

How long does the battery last with ANC on?

Independent figures vary enough that no single runtime should be treated as guaranteed. WIRED reports six hours of playback on the earbuds with ANC on and 25 hours total with the case. TechRadar reports 4.5 hours with ANC on and 18 hours total with the case, and says its ANC-on result was disappointing at its tested volume. WIRED’s review TechRadar’s review

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With ANC off, the same publications report different totals too: WIRED gives 10 hours on the earbuds and 42 hours with the case, while TechRadar gives six hours and 25 hours, respectively. Differences in test conditions and methods matter; your volume and use will also affect playback. Nothing’s advertised 42-hour case total should therefore be read as a manufacturer claim, not as a result that independent reviewers consistently measured.

What do call recording and Audio Snapshot do?

Nothing promotes the Ear (3a)’s ability to capture calls and media. WIRED describes Audio Snapshot as fun and call recording as practically useful, noting that recordings can be exported. These are distinctive extras for earbuds in this price tier, though their usefulness depends on whether you want to record and manage audio from your phone.

TechRadar cautions that the other participant may receive only a brief beep as an indication that a call is being recorded. If you use the feature, make sure everyone involved understands and agrees to the recording. The cited reviews do not establish the law in any particular jurisdiction, so check the rules that apply where you are rather than treating a beep as a substitute for consent.

How does it compare with other options?

RTINGS’ comparison with the Anker Soundcore Space A40 gives a practical trade-off: it says the Space A40 has stronger ANC, longer battery life, an auto-off timer, and wireless charging, while the Ear (3a) fits more stably in the ear and offers more detailed parametric EQ. Those are RTINGS’ comparative findings, not a universal ranking for every listener. RTINGS’ review

RTINGS also suggests considering Nothing’s flagship Ear (3) for improved microphones and wireless charging; in its comparison, the Ear (3a) has longer continuous battery life. The right alternative depends on what matters most to you:

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Choose the Ear (3a) if customizable sound, a stable fit, and its capture features appeal to you, and you are comfortable with bass-heavy stock tuning and variable battery results.
  • Consider the Space A40 if stronger ANC, longer battery life, or wireless charging is a higher priority, based on RTINGS’ comparison.
  • Consider the Ear (3) if improved microphones or wireless charging are more important than the Ear (3a)’s longer continuous battery life in RTINGS’ comparison.

TechRadar also names Apple AirPods 4 and Cambridge Audio Melomania A100 as alternatives, but the cited material does not provide a controlled comparison across those models and the Ear (3a). For open or clip-style designs, it points to Huawei FreeArc and SoundPEATS Clip1; those use a different fit approach rather than serving as direct in-ear equivalents. TechRadar’s review

Is the Nothing Ear (3a) worth buying?

It is worth considering if you want feature-rich wireless earbuds with adjustable EQ, improved ANC over the Ear (a), and built-in call and media capture. Its value is less convincing if you expect balanced sound without adjustment, class-leading ANC, or a dependable long runtime with ANC enabled. Check the current local price before buying: Nothing’s US page showed a temporary $79 listing against a crossed-out $99 when accessed, while the reviewed launch prices were $99 / £99 in the US and UK and AU$179 in Australia.
