If Windows says there isn’t enough storage to install an update, check the free space on your Windows drive, then use Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations to remove only files you’re comfortable deleting. There is no single space target for every update: Microsoft says feature updates typically need 6–11 GB or more, while quality updates typically need 2–3 GB or more. If cleanup is not enough, Windows may offer a temporary update workflow using an external drive, but it can still require free space on the PC.
Check how much space is available
- Open File Explorer, select This PC, and check the free space on the drive where Windows is installed, usually C:.
- For the storage breakdown in Windows, open Settings > System > Storage.
Microsoft’s typical figures are not guarantees for a particular computer. The space needed can vary with the update path and optional content installed on the PC. Windows may also need temporary space to support rolling back an update; Microsoft says this rollback support typically requires space for 10 days. Microsoft’s Windows update storage guidance explains why the download size alone may not reflect the total space needed.
| Update or operation | Microsoft’s stated space guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Feature update | Typically 6 GB–11 GB or more | A typical range, not a guarantee for an individual device. |
| Quality update | Typically 2 GB–3 GB or more | A typical range; actual needs vary. |
| OS upgrade | At least 16 GB free for a 32-bit OS or 20 GB for a 64-bit OS | These figures apply to an OS upgrade, not every routine update. |
The update figures come from Microsoft Support, which does not state a publication year for this guidance. Microsoft’s OS-upgrade storage guidance gives the separate minimum figures for an upgrade.
Free space with Windows’ built-in tools
- Open Settings > System > Storage, then select Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations, depending on what appears in your version of Windows.
- Review the categories and suggested files before removing anything. Choose only items you recognize and no longer need.
- Run the cleanup, then check the available space again. Microsoft advises working through cleanup steps one at a time and checking whether each has freed enough space before moving on.
For a file you are unsure about, leave it in place until you know what it is or have made a backup. The available categories and suggestions can vary by PC. See Microsoft’s general storage cleanup guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Can an external drive help install the update?
Yes. If Windows Update shows Fix issues because the PC lacks space, Microsoft documents a workflow that uses an external storage device with at least 10 GB free. Connect the drive and follow the on-screen instructions. Back up important files on the external device first; Microsoft’s process may use it temporarily, and its instructions permit removing it after installation is complete.
An external drive does not guarantee that the PC’s internal storage is sufficient. Microsoft warns that Windows may still prompt you to free more space on the internal drive. The 10 GB figure is Microsoft’s threshold for this documented temporary workflow, not a universal update requirement. See Microsoft’s instructions for using external storage during an update.

Choose cleanup or external storage
| Option | Use it when | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in cleanup | You can identify files or categories that are safe to remove. | Review suggested items first, then check free space after each cleanup step. |
| Temporary external storage | Windows offers Fix issues and you have an external device with at least 10 GB free. | Back up its important files. The PC may still need additional internal free space. |
If the update still will not install
- Note the exact message or error code Windows displays. A low-storage warning and an unrelated update failure can require different fixes.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter using Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting instructions.
- If the error is 0x800f0922, Microsoft lists insufficient disk space as one possible cause and recommends freeing space. Its troubleshooting guidance also includes temporarily disabling a VPN as a step to try; do this only if appropriate for your network and security needs.
Freeing storage addresses only storage-related causes. Follow the instructions for the specific error if the update continues to fail.

Windows 10 support status
Storage cleanup can help with the update process, but it does not change Windows’ support status. Microsoft states that standard support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Under its standard support terms, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
