NordSpace is expanding its Atlantic Spaceport Complex (ASX) in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland and Labrador, backed by a $10 million investment package announced on August 27, 2026. The project is intended to become Canada’s first commercial orbital spaceport, but government releases and NordSpace’s public material do not define what “Phase 2” formally includes.
What was announced on August 27, 2026
The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) announced federal support for continued ASX development. The package combines government contributions with NordSpace capital and is meant to advance a sovereign Canadian commercial launch capability, construction activity and aerospace supply-chain growth.
| Contributor | Amount | Structure or condition | Stated purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Government of Canada through ACOA | $1 million | Contribution announced August 27, 2026 | Spaceport development and sovereign launch capability |
| Government of Newfoundland and Labrador | $4 million | $1 million term loan plus $3 million forgivable loan; the forgivable portion is tied to 100 new permanent full-time positions by 2033 | Expansion of the spaceport project and regional economic development |
| NordSpace | $5 million | Company capital in the announced package | Continued construction and development of ASX |
A separate provincial Order in Council dated August 26, 2026 authorized a Crown-land grant of approximately 50 hectares to NordSpace Atlantic Corporation for the spaceport complex. The federal grants database records a $1 million contribution agreement dated June 16, 2026, running through December 31, 2027, for spaceport development.
What the Atlantic Spaceport Complex is designed to do
Orbital launch infrastructure
NordSpace describes ASX as a planned operational orbital spaceport with two launch pads. The company says the pads will support NordSpace vehicles as well as partner launch vehicles, with nominal launch inclinations from approximately 44° to 105°. Inclination describes the angle of an orbit relative to Earth’s equator and affects which satellite missions can be served.
#1 Best Overall
- Replica of the tile structure
- Detailed cockpit
- Cockpit canopy optionally removable
- 2 crew figures
- Opening cargo bay doors
NordSpace also says the site is more than 5 kilometres from the nearest town and is planned for up to 20 launches per year. Those distance and launch-cadence figures are company-stated design claims, not independently audited operating results.
Potential users
- NordSpace, for launches of its own vehicles and payloads.
- Partner launch-vehicle companies using the pads and associated infrastructure.
- Satellite operators seeking orbital access from a Canadian site.
- Aerospace, transportation, construction and advanced-manufacturing suppliers supporting the facility.
Vehicle and system targets
NordSpace’s corporate materials present ASX as part of an integrated system that includes the following development targets. None of these descriptions establishes that a vehicle is flight-ready or has completed an orbital launch.

What “Phase 2 construction” means
The phrase in the headline is not defined in the primary announcements reviewed. NordSpace’s information and media pages document geotechnical work, plans to commence construction and imagery or video associated with SLC-02 construction, but they do not publish a formal Phase 2 scope, dated milestone list or independently audited percentage complete.

Accordingly, “Phase 2” should be read as a description of an expansion or subsequent construction period rather than a government-defined project stage. It does not, by itself, establish that either launch pad is complete, that a launch date has been set or that the site is authorized for orbital operations.

Jobs and regional economic commitments
| Source and date | Employment figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, August 27, 2026 | 100 new permanent full-time positions by 2033 | Condition attached to the $3 million forgivable-loan component of the provincial package |
| ACOA release, August 27, 2026 | 30 high-skilled jobs by 2028 | NordSpace project goal cited by the federal government |
| ACOA release, August 27, 2026 | Potentially more than 200 jobs by 2035 | Longer-term potential cited in the federal release, not a guaranteed headcount |
The federal announcement also points to construction, transportation, professional-services and advanced-manufacturing opportunities. The provincial loan structure makes the 2033 employment target financially significant: part of the public support is forgivable only under the stated job condition.

Canada has satellite and space-manufacturing capabilities, but ASX is being positioned as domestic infrastructure for launching orbital vehicles. A Canadian site could give local operators an alternative to relying entirely on foreign launch ranges, subject to environmental, safety, range and other regulatory approvals.

NordSpace founder and CEO Rahul Goel said the company’s goal is to launch satellites “on Canada’s own terms” for uses including agricultural monitoring, wildfire prediction, connectivity for remote communities and wildlife observation. Those are proposed applications, not evidence that ASX is already providing those services.
What is still unknown
- The formal scope and milestones of Phase 2.
- A dated completion schedule for the site or either launch pad.
- Launch authorizations, operating permits and a first orbital launch date.
- Independent confirmation of vehicle performance, readiness or customer manifests.
- Whether the stated 20-launch annual capacity will be achieved in operations.
These details can change as construction, licensing and vehicle development proceed. The August 2026 announcements establish financing, land access and stated project goals; they do not establish an operational launch site yet.
What to watch next
- Publication of a formal Phase 2 scope or construction milestone schedule.
- Further site-work and launch-pad construction updates, including dated progress information.
- Regulatory, environmental and range-safety approvals required for launches.
- Evidence of vehicle testing and readiness for orbital missions.
- Customer or partner announcements identifying the first missions to use ASX.
For now, NordSpace’s Newfoundland project is a funded, expanding spaceport development effort with an authorized land grant and explicit employment conditions—not yet a completed or operating orbital launch facility.
