Choose NordPass if you want a genuine free starting tier or a family arrangement built around six separate encrypted vaults. Choose 1Password if you need watchOS support, Travel Mode, specialized records such as passports and bank accounts, or sharing with people who do not use the same manager. Neither product can be named the overall security or usability winner from vendor material alone. Your best choice depends on family size, devices, sharing needs, and whether you are buying for an individual, household, or organization.
This comparison uses plan and feature information published by the two companies and current to October 13, 2026. Prices, limits, and supported devices can change, so verify the live page for your country and billing term before paying.

What NordPass is best at
NordPass has the clearest low-commitment entry point in this comparison. The company describes its Free plan as including password storage, synchronization, autosave, and autofill. That is enough to begin replacing reused passwords without immediately starting a subscription. If you later need broader sharing, easier switching between devices, Password Health checks, or a Data Breach Scanner, those features are described as Premium additions.
The Family plan is another practical differentiator. NordPass describes six separate encrypted vaults, which can suit a household that wants individual spaces rather than one communal list. “Separate” matters: each person can keep personal credentials distinct while the family evaluates the sharing controls it actually needs. Confirm how many people the current checkout permits and which vaults can be shared, because the company can change plan entitlements.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
NordPass also describes business controls such as single sign-on, user provisioning, breach monitoring, and security-key multifactor authentication on tier-specific plans. A company that only needs conventional credential storage may not need the developer-oriented features listed by 1Password, but it should still map each requirement to a specific NordPass tier before buying.
What 1Password is best at
1Password’s strongest case is breadth beyond ordinary website passwords. Its feature pages describe Travel Mode, Watchtower alerts, and dedicated item categories for passports, bank accounts, reward programs, and other records. Those categories can make a difference for a frequent traveler or anyone who wants one structured place for identity and financial information instead of keeping scans and notes in unrelated apps.
1Password also lists watchOS support, while the company’s comparison says NordPass does not support watchOS. If you expect to retrieve or approve credentials from an Apple Watch, verify support for your exact watch, operating-system version, and account type. Platform lists are product claims, not a substitute for testing the workflow you use most often.

Sharing is another 1Password advantage for mixed groups. Official materials say a user can share with someone who does not use 1Password, and they list temporary sharing options. That can help when a contractor, relative, or house sitter needs one credential without joining the same subscription. Review expiration, permissions, and whether the item can be revoked before using it for sensitive access.
Free plans and personal cost
NordPass is the straightforward candidate for someone who insists on a free starting tier. Its Free description covers storage, sync, autosave, and autofill, but the practical limits are still worth checking: look for the current device, sharing, and account-recovery rules on the live plan matrix. Premium is where NordPass places sharing, device switching without logging in again, Password Health, and Data Breach Scanner.
1Password lists Individual and Families products, but a like-for-like current personal price comparison is not established here. Do not infer a personal price from the company’s business page. Business pages show annual-billing examples for organizational plans, and those figures are not consumer prices.
NordPass says monthly billing renews automatically. It also says annual or two-year terms can have a lower average monthly cost and that displayed prices exclude VAT. The amount you see can therefore depend on country, tax, promotion, and billing term. Before entering payment details, record the renewal date, total term cost, tax treatment, cancellation process, and whether a promotional rate changes at renewal.

Family choice: six vaults versus five members
NordPass describes Family as six separate encrypted vaults. 1Password says its Families plan supports up to five family members. Those labels are not necessarily identical: one product may count vaults while another counts people, and sharing permissions can differ inside each account. Treat the numbers as current vendor specifications rather than permanent guarantees.
Ask four questions before choosing a family plan:
- How many distinct people need their own sign-in?
- Which credentials must be shared, and can sharing be limited to one item or one vault?
- Can a departing member lose access immediately without disrupting everyone else?
- What happens to a person’s private vault if the family subscription ends?
A family with six users may favor NordPass on the stated capacity, while a smaller household that routinely shares with non-subscribers may value 1Password’s external-sharing workflow more. Do not assume that a larger numerical limit automatically means more useful sharing.
Security architecture in plain language
NordPass says its vaults use XChaCha20 encryption and that it encrypts user data before it leaves the device. 1Password describes end-to-end AES-256-bit encryption and a two-secret design that combines the account password with a Secret Key. The Secret Key is an additional account-protection value; it is not the same thing as your memorized password.
These descriptions explain design choices, not a head-to-head security result. They do not measure resistance to phishing, malware on an unlocked device, recovery mistakes, browser-extension exposure, or how reliably a person uses multifactor authentication. Neither vendor feature page, by itself, establishes that one service is categorically safer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Whichever service you select, create a long, unique account password, enable every supported multifactor option that fits your threat model, and protect recovery information. A FIDO2 security key can be relevant for phishing-resistant multifactor authentication in a business setting; NordPass specifically names YubiKey and FIDO2-certified keys for business-account MFA. Confirm exact key compatibility and account support before purchasing a model. A hardware key does not replace a strong account password or safe device practices.
Devices, browsers, and Apple Watch
The official comparison lists macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android for both products. It lists watchOS for 1Password and says NordPass does not support it. That makes 1Password the logical first test for an Apple Watch household, but check the current app version and the exact feature you need rather than relying on a platform logo.
List every device you will use before subscribing: work computer, personal laptop, phone, tablet, and any shared family machine. Test browser autofill, synchronization timing, and the sign-in flow on each operating system during the trial or refund window. If you use a locked-down work browser, verify that extensions are permitted. A manager that supports your operating system but cannot run in your managed browser may not solve the problem.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more

Sharing with people outside your account
1Password’s materials say users can share with people who do not use 1Password and can use temporary sharing. This is useful for a one-time handoff, a guest Wi-Fi credential, or a contractor who needs access for a defined period. Confirm whether the recipient must create an account, how long a link remains valid, whether access can be revoked, and whether the item is copied or viewed through a controlled page.
The vendor comparison says NordPass sharing is restricted to NordPass users and that some vault-sharing restrictions apply. That may be perfectly adequate when every participant is already in the same NordPass family or team, but it is a friction point for external collaborators. Test a real scenario before migrating a large shared vault: invite a second account, share one noncritical credential, remove access, and confirm what each person can still see.
Travel Mode and sensitive records
Travel Mode is a named 1Password feature. The company also lists categories for passports, bank accounts, reward programs, and other non-password records. For travelers, the appeal is the ability to prepare a travel-safe view rather than carrying every stored item across a border. Determine exactly what is hidden, how you restore it, and what happens if you lose access while traveling.
NordPass’s compared feature set emphasizes password storage and security features rather than a matching Travel Mode or the same dedicated categories. That does not make it unsuitable for travel; it means the cited materials do not establish an equivalent workflow. If your needs are limited to logins and payment credentials, the additional record categories may not justify a switch.
Business, administration, and developer requirements
Do not choose a business product by reading only the consumer comparison. NordPass lists business and enterprise capabilities including administration controls, SSO, user provisioning, breach monitoring, and security-key MFA. Map those claims to your identity provider, employee lifecycle, reporting, and compliance processes, then confirm the exact tier and user minimum.
1Password’s business materials describe reporting, permissions, identity integrations, SIEM support, and developer tooling such as a command-line interface, software-development kits, SSH workflows, and Git commit signing. Those capabilities can matter to engineering teams that need credentials in automation or want to reduce secrets in source-control workflows. Ask whether the feature is included, an add-on, or limited to a higher tier; also check log-retention periods, export controls, and administrator visibility.
For either service, create a short requirements sheet before requesting quotes:

How to decide: a practical sequence
- Count users and devices. Include relatives, contractors, watches, Linux machines, and managed workstations.
- Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. Examples include a free tier, watchOS, external sharing, Travel Mode, or developer tooling.
- Choose the right plan level. Free, personal, family, business, and enterprise entitlements are not interchangeable.
- Run a small migration. Import a handful of low-risk credentials, test autofill, and verify synchronization on every important device.
- Test sharing and recovery. Invite one additional person, revoke access, and confirm that account-recovery instructions are clear.
- Calculate the real cost. Compare the total term, VAT, renewal price, user count, and any required security keys.
- Review the live terms. Recheck platform support, member caps, cancellation, and privacy or administrator controls immediately before purchase.
Migration pitfalls to avoid
Do not delete your old vault as soon as an import finishes. Keep it available until you have checked high-value accounts, one-time codes, passkeys, secure notes, shared items, and recovery contacts. Imports can organize ordinary passwords correctly while leaving less common record types behind.
Do not treat a browser’s saved-password export as a complete backup. Export files can be readable text, so store them temporarily in a protected location and delete them securely after confirming the new vault. Change passwords that were exposed during an unsafe export, and never email a vault export to yourself.
Finally, do not let convenience undermine the account password. A manager can generate unique credentials, but it cannot protect an account if the master password is reused or entered into a phishing page. Bookmark the legitimate sign-in page, enable MFA, and teach family or staff how to verify unexpected sharing requests.

Questions to verify on the checkout page
Before paying, confirm the exact personal or business plan, maximum members, supported devices, sharing rules, included security features, renewal price, VAT, cancellation method, and refund window. Take a screenshot or save the terms for your records. Because the NordPass personal pricing page displayed dynamic placeholders when accessed on October 13, 2026, quoting a number here would be misleading. The same caution applies to promotions and country-specific 1Password pricing.

Recommended Free Tools
Does 1Password have a free personal plan?
The cited 1Password pages list Individual and Families plans but do not establish a like-for-like current free personal tier or price comparison. Check the live consumer page for your country and billing term; do not use business-plan pricing as a personal price.
What does NordPass Premium add?
NordPass describes Premium as adding sharing, easier switching between devices without logging in again, Password Health, and Data Breach Scanner to the Free features.
Does 1Password support more than passwords?
Yes. 1Password lists dedicated categories for records such as passports, bank accounts, and reward programs, along with Travel Mode and Watchtower alerts. Decide whether those categories solve a real need before paying for them.
What should a business compare besides price?
Compare user minimums, SSO, provisioning, administrator permissions, reporting, breach monitoring, MFA and security-key support, identity integrations, SIEM support, retention, and developer workflows. 1Password lists CLI, SDK, SSH, and Git commit-signing tools; NordPass lists business administration, provisioning, monitoring, and security-key MFA on relevant tiers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAre NordPass prices fixed?
No. NordPass says monthly billing renews automatically, while annual or two-year terms can lower the average monthly cost; displayed prices exclude VAT. Country, tax, promotion, billing term, and renewal timing can change the total. Confirm the live checkout amount and renewal terms.
Should I buy a FIDO2 security key with either manager?
A FIDO2 key can be useful for phishing-resistant MFA, particularly in a business setting. NordPass specifically names YubiKey and FIDO2-certified keys for business-account MFA. Confirm exact compatibility and account support; a key is an accessory, not a replacement for a strong account password.
The Bottom Line
NordPass is the practical first stop for a cost-sensitive solo user who wants a stated free tier or for a household that values six separate encrypted vaults. 1Password is the stronger candidate when watchOS, Travel Mode, structured identity records, external or temporary sharing, or developer-oriented business tooling is central. Neither vendor’s feature pages establish an overall security or usability winner. Test your real devices and sharing workflow, compare the exact plan and renewal cost in your country, and recheck limits immediately before purchase.
