Yes—NOOK syncs your NOOK Shop library across devices when they are signed in to the same bn.com account. Barnes & Noble says you can access that library on bn.com, in the NOOK App, or on a NOOK device. The Library’s Sync or Refresh control downloads books and periodicals purchased on another registered NOOK, phone, tablet, or the web.
Reading-position sync is documented specifically for the NOOK App for iOS: after the library is refreshed, a book you have started should open to the more recently viewed page. Barnes & Noble does not make that exact promise for every Android version or every NOOK model in the support guidance covered here, so treat resume behavior as platform-specific rather than universal.
The most dependable way to think about NOOK sync is in layers: account-owned Shop content, local files, ebook reading position, and audiobook data each follow different rules. Knowing which layer you are using makes a missing title or unexpected starting page much easier to diagnose.
What NOOK syncs—and what it does not
NOOK synchronization is primarily a same-account library service. It is designed to make NOOK Shop purchases available from your other registered reading locations, not to mirror every file and every reading datum between unrelated accounts.

| Content or data | What Barnes & Noble documents | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| NOOK Shop ebooks and periodicals | The Library Sync control downloads purchases made on another NOOK, phone, tablet, or bn.com when the devices use the same account. | The item must be associated with that account and the device or app must be able to download it. |
| Library availability | The same NOOK Library can be opened on bn.com, in the NOOK App, and on a NOOK device. | Availability does not mean every title is stored locally; a download normally requires an internet connection. |
| Ebook reading position | Barnes & Noble’s iOS instructions say started content opens to the more recently viewed page after a Library sync. | The cited guidance does not establish identical resume behavior on all Android releases or NOOK hardware. |
| Audiobook progress, bookmarks, and notes | These automatically sync among internet-connected computers and Barnes & Noble NOOK Apps signed in to the same bn.com account. | Listening position from the old audiobook platform does not transfer to the newer platform. |
| Personal or sideloaded EPUB files | Android instructions place transferred EPUBs under My Files, separate from Shop content. | There is no basis to promise that sideloaded files, their position, or their annotations sync like Shop purchases. |
That distinction explains many apparently missing books: a Shop purchase belongs in the account Library, while a personal EPUB transferred to one device is a local file unless you move it yourself. The Sync control cannot turn a file in a device’s file area into an account purchase.
Sync also is not a guarantee that every change appears instantly. Barnes & Noble’s instructions tell you to refresh the Library when a purchase is absent, so use that explicit update step rather than assuming that opening the app alone has checked for new content.
Which devices and apps can access the same library?
bn.com in a web browser
Sign in to bn.com with the account that owns the purchase to view the Library from a computer or mobile browser. This is an access point to the account library; it is not proof that a title has been downloaded for offline reading on another device. If the book is visible on the website but absent from a NOOK, the next checks are account identity, a Library refresh, connection, filters, and compatibility.

The NOOK App can access the same account library on supported phones and tablets. Mobile controls differ slightly by operating system, but Barnes & Noble’s troubleshooting instructions use a pull-down or swipe-down gesture on Android, iOS, and most mobile devices to refresh the Library.
The app is therefore a legitimate second reading location, not merely a companion for a physical NOOK. Sign in with the purchasing account, refresh after a web or device purchase, and allow the title to download while the app has a usable connection.
A NOOK e-reader
NOOK devices, including GlowLight models covered by Barnes & Noble’s Library guidance, use a Library Sync control represented by two curved arrows. A dedicated e-reader is optional: the app and bn.com are also official ways to reach the same account library.
When you add a NOOK e-reader to an existing setup, the key requirement is registration to the same bn.com account. A second physical device is not a special prerequisite for syncing; it simply gives you another supported place to open the account’s purchases.

How to sync a NOOK library manually
Use a manual refresh whenever a recent purchase is not visible or a title is present but has not downloaded. Syncing is account-based, so start by confirming the account before repeating the refresh. Keep the device connected until the refresh indicator or equivalent activity has finished.
On a NOOK device
- Connect the NOOK to Wi-Fi.
- Open Library.
- Select the Sync button, shown as two curved arrows.
- Wait for the Library to update, then select the title to download or open it.
Barnes & Noble describes this control as downloading recent NOOK Shop purchases from the Shop, other linked devices, and bn.com. The GlowLight Library instructions apply the same same-account condition. If the title still does not appear, leave the Library, return to it, and check that a filter is not limiting the view to downloaded items.

In the NOOK App for iOS
- Open the NOOK App and go to Library.
- Pull down within the Library screen.
- Release when the refresh indicator appears.
- Wait for the sync to finish, then open the title.
Barnes & Noble’s iOS support article, last updated June 24, 2025, says that after syncing, content you had begun reading opens to the more recently viewed page the next time it is accessed. The refresh is the important action: simply switching between screens is not the documented trigger.
On Android and most mobile devices
- Open the NOOK App and display Library.
- Swipe down on the Library screen to refresh.
- Keep the app connected until the refresh indicator clears.
- Search for the purchase and tap it to download.
Menu names and gestures can vary by device. If a swipe does not trigger a refresh, use the app’s Library menu or update the app before trying again. Do not confuse the Library’s account content with EPUBs copied into the Android file area; those are handled separately.

- Open Library.
- Open the Library menu.
- Choose Refresh or the equivalent sync command shown by that device.
- Reopen the Library and check the title.
Barnes & Noble’s troubleshooting guidance notes that controls vary across devices, so follow the label shown on your particular NOOK interface. The wording may be Refresh rather than Sync, but the purpose is the same: ask the Library to check the account for available content.
Will NOOK remember where you stopped reading?
What is specifically documented
For the NOOK App for iOS, Barnes & Noble says: “After syncing your Library, any content that you had begun reading will open to the more recently viewed page the next time it is accessed.” The statement is tied to a Library sync, not merely opening the app, and the support page was last updated June 24, 2025.
In practical terms, read on one supported iOS session, refresh the Library, and then open the started content again. The documented result is the more recently viewed page rather than an automatic promise about every page change on every platform.
What is not established by that guidance
The cited support material does not establish that the exact same ebook resume behavior works on every Android app version, every NOOK hardware model, or every web session. If you move between platforms, refresh the Library on the destination device and verify the result before relying on it for a long reading session.
Recommended Free Tools
There is also no documented claim here that a title must resume at the latest page immediately after every tap or that a web browser session will behave like the iOS app. If the destination opens at an earlier point, use the source device’s visible location or your own bookmark as a fallback rather than assuming the account is damaged.
Do not assume all annotations follow
The general ebook Library instructions do not promise universal synchronization of highlights, notes, bookmarks, or every other annotation. Audiobooks have a separate, more explicit synchronization policy, described below. Keep ebook annotations and audiobook notes in separate expectations unless Barnes & Noble documents a rule for the specific platform and content type.
How audiobook syncing differs
Barnes & Noble’s audiobook guidance, last updated January 8, 2025, states that audiobook listening progress, bookmarks, and notes automatically sync across internet-connected computers and Barnes & Noble NOOK Apps on any device signed in to the same bn.com account.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That is a narrower but stronger statement than the general ebook guidance: it explicitly names progress, bookmarks, and notes, and it specifies internet-connected computers and NOOK Apps. Make sure each listening device is online and signed in to the same account before judging whether an update has failed.
There is a specific migration exception: the last-listened location from the old audiobook platform does not transfer to the newer platform. If an audiobook was started in the old service, you may need to find your place manually after moving to the newer one. This limitation concerns the old-to-new platform transition; it does not erase the same-account syncing rule for supported current computers and NOOK Apps.
Why a NOOK purchase is not appearing
Work through these checks in order. Each step rules out a different cause, so repeatedly pressing Sync without checking the account or filters may not change anything.
1. Confirm the account identity
Verify that the email address used for the purchase is the same account signed in on bn.com, the NOOK App, and the NOOK device. A title purchased under a different account will not appear in the current account’s Library, even if both accounts use the same physical device. Account identity is the first check because refresh cannot import a purchase that belongs elsewhere.
2. Remove Library filters
Check whether a category, collection, or search filter is hiding the title. Also turn off Only show downloaded items when you are looking for every title in the account rather than only books already stored locally. A title can be correctly associated with the account and still be invisible under a downloaded-only view.

3. Refresh the Library
Use the platform-specific procedure above: the NOOK device’s Sync button, a pull-down or swipe-down gesture in the mobile app, or the Library menu’s Refresh command on other interfaces. Wait for the operation to complete before searching again.
4. Check the connection
Wi-Fi is required to download NOOK content. Some app settings allow cellular downloads, but mobile-data charges can apply. A title may be visible in the account while its download remains pending until the device has a usable connection. If you are using cellular data, confirm that downloads are permitted and that your plan’s data settings allow the transfer.
5. Check title and software compatibility
Barnes & Noble advises checking whether the title is compatible with the device or app and whether the device software is current. An account match alone cannot make an incompatible format download. This check matters when one reading location can open a title but another cannot.
6. Handle a preorder that will not download
For preorder download problems, Barnes & Noble’s troubleshooting page suggests archiving the title and then unarchiving it. Refresh the Library afterward and try the download again. This is a targeted step for preorder behavior, not a general instruction to archive every missing book.

How to tell a missing purchase from a local file
NOOK Shop purchase
A Shop purchase should be associated with the bn.com account used at checkout. It can be retrieved through the Library on another registered NOOK, phone, tablet, or bn.com after a refresh, subject to compatibility and connectivity. The account relationship is what makes it retrievable from those access points.
Personal EPUB transferred to Android
Barnes & Noble’s Android transfer instructions describe personal EPUB files under My Files, not as NOOK Shop Library items. That separate location is the key diagnostic clue: a file copied to one device is not automatically evidence of cloud synchronization. Move such files to each device yourself and do not expect Shop-style account delivery or guaranteed position syncing.
If a personal EPUB is absent from the Shop Library, that absence is normal rather than proof that the Library refresh failed. Look in the device’s file area and use the transfer method appropriate to that device. Keep personal-file handling separate from account troubleshooting.
Choosing a reading setup
| Choose this setup when you need… | What it provides | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| bn.com | Quick access to the account Library from a browser. | Whether the title is available for browser reading or requires an app or device download. |
| NOOK App | Reading on a phone or tablet with the same account library. | App version, connection settings, and platform-specific resume behavior. |
| NOOK e-reader | A dedicated reading device within the NOOK ecosystem. | Wi-Fi, current software, title compatibility, and the Library Sync control. |
| Multiple setups | Access to the same Shop purchases from more than one location. | That every device is signed in to the purchasing account and refreshed after a new purchase. |
You do not need to buy a second NOOK to make synchronization work. The same-account Library is also available through bn.com and the NOOK App. A second device is a reading-choice decision, not a sync requirement.
Choose the browser when you need quick account access, the app when a phone or tablet is convenient, and a NOOK e-reader when you want a dedicated device. None of those choices changes the central requirement: the purchase and destination must belong to the same bn.com account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical same-account sync checklist
- Use one bn.com account for the purchase and every device or app that should receive it.
- Connect the destination device to Wi-Fi before attempting a download.
- Open Library and use Sync, Refresh, pull-down, or swipe-down as appropriate.
- Turn off Only show downloaded items while searching for a title that has not yet been stored locally.
- Check compatibility and install current device or app software when a title remains unavailable.
- Treat iOS resume-at-the-more-recent-page as a documented iOS behavior, not a blanket promise for every platform.
- Keep audiobook rules separate from ebook rules, especially during migration from the old audiobook platform.
- Handle sideloaded EPUBs as personal files under the device’s file area rather than assuming they are cloud-synced Shop content.
- For a preorder that will not download, archive and unarchive it, then refresh before trying again.
What “seamless reading” realistically means
For NOOK Shop purchases, seamless access means that one account’s Library can be reached from bn.com, the NOOK App, and NOOK devices, and that a manual or automatic Library update can bring purchases made elsewhere into view. The strongest documented reading-position promise is for the iOS app after a Library sync. Audiobooks have their own explicit progress, bookmark, and note synchronization among supported internet-connected computers and NOOK Apps.
The boundaries matter: account identity, filters, Wi-Fi, compatibility, software version, content type, and platform all affect the result. Treating those variables separately gives you a reliable way to diagnose a missing title without assuming that every personal file, annotation, or reading position is synchronized in the same way.
In short, sync is a practical account-library feature, not a universal clone of one device onto another. Refresh deliberately, identify the content type, and use the platform-specific behavior that Barnes & Noble actually documents.

How do I sync my NOOK library?
Sign in to the same bn.com account that made the purchase, open Library, and use the platform’s update control. On a NOOK device, tap Sync (the two curved arrows). In the iOS or Android app, pull or swipe down on the Library screen. On other interfaces, open the Library menu and choose Refresh. Keep the device connected while the update runs.

Will NOOK remember where I stopped reading?
Barnes & Noble specifically says the NOOK App for iOS opens started content to the more recently viewed page after a Library sync. The cited guidance does not establish identical behavior for every Android release, NOOK model, or web session, so refresh the destination and verify the result when moving between platforms.
Why isn’t my book showing up on my NOOK?
First confirm that the purchase and the NOOK use the same email account. Then turn off Only show downloaded items and other restrictive filters, refresh the Library, check Wi-Fi, and verify title and software compatibility. For a preorder that will not download, Barnes & Noble suggests archiving and unarchiving it before refreshing again.
Do NOOK Shop purchases sync from bn.com?
Yes. Barnes & Noble says the Library Sync control downloads NOOK Shop books and periodicals purchased on bn.com, another NOOK, or a phone or tablet registered to the same account. The destination still needs a compatible app or device and a connection for downloading.
Do sideloaded EPUB files sync between NOOK devices?
Do not assume they do. Barnes & Noble’s Android transfer instructions place personal EPUBs under My Files, separately from NOOK Shop Library content. A file copied to one device must be moved to another yourself unless a separate, current service explicitly provides that transfer.
Do NOOK audiobooks sync progress and bookmarks?
Barnes & Noble says audiobook listening progress, bookmarks, and notes automatically sync among internet-connected computers and NOOK Apps signed in to the same bn.com account. However, the last-listened location from the old audiobook platform does not transfer to the newer platform.
Do I need a second NOOK for syncing?
No. A second e-reader is optional. Barnes & Noble identifies bn.com, the NOOK App, and a NOOK device as Library access points, provided they use the account that owns the purchase.
Why can I see a book online but not download it?
Online visibility confirms that the title is associated with an accessible Library, but downloading also depends on the destination’s connection, filters, software, and title compatibility. Refresh the Library, connect to Wi-Fi, disable downloaded-only filtering, and check for software or compatibility requirements.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: NOOK Shop purchases can be retrieved across bn.com, the NOOK App, and NOOK devices registered to the same bn.com account. Refresh the Library when a purchase is missing, and remember that Barnes & Noble’s explicit resume-at-the-more-recent-page statement applies to the iOS app after syncing. Audiobooks have broader documented progress, bookmark, and note syncing, while sideloaded EPUBs remain separate local files.
