Staking APY is not automatically a real gain in purchasing power. It is an annualized estimate of how many additional units of a network’s native token you may receive. To judge whether you are actually better off, adjust that rate for token-supply growth, commissions, fees, penalties, liquidity limits and, separately, the token’s price in your reporting currency.
The most useful supply-adjusted approximation is (1 + nominal staking APY) / (1 + token inflation) − 1. That result measures your change in share of the token supply, not your dollar or euro return. A token can give you a positive supply-share yield while losing value against fiat, or deliver a positive fiat return even when your supply-adjusted yield is weak.
What a staking APY actually tells you
A staking APY is a rate expressed in native-token units and annualized for comparison. If a protocol quotes 6% APY, the headline claim is that 100 tokens could become approximately 106 tokens over a year under the stated reward and compounding assumptions. It does not promise that the tokens will be worth 6% more in euros, dollars or another currency.
The rate normally combines protocol issuance with the reward mechanics of the network. Your realized result can be lower because of validator commission, platform fees, downtime, missed votes, slashing or a provider’s treatment of compounding. The quoted number can also be a protocol-level estimate while the rate shown to a customer is a net or otherwise customized figure.

APR and APY are different rate bases
- APR is a simple annualized rate. It generally does not assume that rewards are reinvested.
- APY includes an assumption that rewards are compounded at a specified interval. The more frequently rewards are reinvested, the more the APY can exceed the equivalent simple APR.
Before comparing two offers, establish whether both are APR or APY, what compounding interval is assumed, and whether compounding is automatic. A platform that quotes APY after fees is not directly comparable with a protocol dashboard that quotes gross APR.
What does a high APY really mean?
A high number can reflect a high issuance rate, a small amount of active stake, unusually favorable validator performance, or an aggressive assumption about reinvestment. It does not by itself show that you are beating inflation or earning a positive market return. Ask whether the rate is gross, how long it was observed, and which supply and price benchmarks are being used.
Three meanings of “real yield”
There is no single universal real-yield number. Use the definition that matches the decision you are making.

This asks whether your stake represents a larger fraction of all tokens after rewards and issuance. Solana calls the concept Adjusted Staking Yield: the change in fractional ownership of the token supply for staked tokens caused by inflation issuance. It is the clearest answer to “Did staking preserve my share of the network?”
2. Token purchasing-power yield
This compares what your token balance can buy inside the crypto economy. It can differ from supply-share yield when demand for the token, its utility or its market liquidity changes.
3. Fiat return
This measures the value of your position in dollars, euros or another reporting currency. It includes the token’s market-price movement, so it is a market-return calculation rather than a staking-only calculation. A 2% increase in token units can coincide with a 30% fiat loss if the token price falls by more than the reward rate.
State which definition you are using whenever you publish or compare a “real yield.” Otherwise, two numerically different answers can both be correct because they measure different outcomes.

How to calculate supply-adjusted staking yield
The one-period approximation is:
real token yield ≈ (1 + nominal staking APY) / (1 + token inflation) − 1
Use rates for the same period and the same inflation denominator. If the APY is compounded but inflation is quoted as a simple annual supply-growth rate, the result is only an approximation.
Worked example
Suppose a hypothetical network quotes 10% staking APY and total token supply grows 8% over the same year:
(1.10 / 1.08) − 1 = 0.0185
The supply-share result is approximately 1.85%, not 2 percentage points. Simply subtracting 8% from 10% gives a convenient rough shortcut, but division captures the different denominators and is more accurate for a one-period comparison.

Start with the reward rate that actually reaches your account. If a validator keeps a 10% commission from a hypothetical 10% gross reward, the delegator receives about 9% before penalties and other fees. Then apply the supply-adjustment formula to that net token reward. Do not subtract a validator’s commission from token inflation: commission reduces your reward, while inflation describes supply growth.

For a complete estimate, list each component separately:
- Gross protocol reward or quoted APR/APY.
- Validator commission and any platform or management fee.
- Expected loss from downtime, missed votes or penalties.
- Compounding frequency and whether reinvestment is automatic.
- Token-supply growth over the same observation period.
- Price change in your reporting currency, if you need a fiat return.
A step-by-step calculation
- Record the starting token balance and the quote’s observation date.
- Convert the displayed APR or APY to the rate actually credited to you, accounting for commission, platform fees and expected penalties.
- Identify whether inflation means new issuance, total-supply growth or a fractional-ownership measure. Use the same period for both rates.
- Apply the ratio formula, rather than simply subtracting percentages, when the figures use different bases.
- For a fiat result, multiply the ending token balance by the ending market price and compare it with the starting balance multiplied by the starting price.
- Report the assumptions, including compounding, liquidity restrictions and the currency used.
Why staking APY changes from one epoch to the next
An epoch is a protocol-defined accounting period. Annualized staking figures are projections from the rewards observed or expected during those periods, not fixed coupons. A dashboard can therefore move even when you have not changed your delegation.
Solana’s changing annualized rate
Solana says staking yield is annualized and varies each epoch as inflation, total active stake, validator uptime and commission change. Its staking page describes epochs as approximately two days. Rewards are proportional to epoch vote credits, and a validator’s commission is the percentage of rewards deposited into the validator’s vote account that the validator retains.
Solana’s documented inflation path starts at an 8% annual inflation rate, decreases by 15% year over year, and targets a 1.5% long-term inflation rate. Those are protocol parameters, not a promise that a delegator will receive the same percentage: active stake, validator performance and commission affect the realized result.
Because rewards are allocated by epoch, a validator with fewer vote credits can underperform the network’s headline rate even when the protocol’s inflation schedule is unchanged. A commission change also affects future epochs, so record the validator’s commission at the time each estimate is made.
Ethereum’s validator economics
Ethereum calculates rewards using a validator’s effective balance and the total active balance. Its reward documentation summarizes the relationship this way: as the number of validators rises, overall issuance grows roughly with the square root of that number, while the base reward per validator falls roughly with its inverse square root. Consequently, a validator’s quoted rate can change as the amount of ETH participating in proof of stake changes.
Validator duties also matter. Consensus rewards can be reduced by downtime, and severe rule violations can trigger slashing. Ethereum’s net issuance is additionally affected by fee burn. The Ethereum issuance explanation gives an illustrative case in which an average gas price of 16 gwei could burn about 1,700 ETH issued to validators per day, producing net issuance around zero or below for that day. That example is a network-wide issuance illustration, not a forecast of an individual validator’s return.

Gross protocol rate versus the rate you receive
Two people can stake the same token and earn different net results because they choose different operating arrangements.
Solo validation
Ethereum documentation lists 32 ETH as the requirement to operate a self-managed validator. Solo operation provides direct control over keys and validator configuration, but you must supply hardware, maintain connectivity, monitor duties and accept the operational consequences of downtime or slashing. The advertised protocol rate is still not a guaranteed return: missed duties can reduce rewards, while a serious consensus violation can impose a penalty.
Pooled staking
Pooled arrangements lower the capital or hardware requirement by combining users’ deposits. In exchange, the pool can charge a fee, impose its own withdrawal rules and introduce custody or counterparty exposure. Verify how the quoted rate is calculated and whether it is gross or net. Check whether rewards are automatically reinvested or paid as separate tokens, because that distinction changes the effective APY.

Liquid staking
Liquid staking can issue a transferable representation of a staked position, improving flexibility while the underlying asset is subject to network withdrawal rules. The additional token and its smart contracts create risks of depegging, contract failure, market illiquidity and redemption delays. A liquid token’s market price can therefore diverge from the value of the underlying stake even when validator performance is normal.
Centralized products
Opaque centralized products can make it impossible to independently verify what is actually staked. Treat a displayed APY as a product claim until you can identify the underlying validator or staking mechanism, fee schedule, custody arrangement and withdrawal terms. A convenient user interface does not remove counterparty risk or make the rate protocol-level.
A practical comparison framework
Use the same checklist for a protocol dashboard, a validator and a staking provider.
- Normalize the rate. Convert APR and APY to a common basis and record the compounding assumption.
- Match the dates. Record the observation date, epoch or averaging period. Never compare a live dashboard with a historical average as if they were simultaneous.
- Identify the inflation measure. Determine whether it is protocol issuance, total-supply growth or a supply-share measure such as Adjusted Staking Yield.
- Subtract your actual costs. Include validator commission, platform fees, withdrawal charges and any spread or redemption cost.
- Estimate operational drag. Review uptime, vote performance, missed duties and slashing history where available.
- Check liquidity. Note the unbonding period, withdrawal queue, cooldown and liquid-staking redemption mechanism.
- Separate market risk. Calculate token-unit return first, then apply the token-price change in your chosen fiat currency.
- Write down the scope. Label the result as protocol-level, validator-level or provider-level, and specify the geography or customer tier if the quote is restricted.
How to calculate a fiat return
After calculating your net token balance, apply the market-price change separately. For a simple one-period illustration, if 100 tokens become 106 tokens and the token price falls from $2.00 to $1.80, the starting position is worth $200 and the ending position is worth $190.80. The staking increased token units by 6%, but the fiat result is −4.6%.
The reverse can happen as well. A 2% supply-adjusted staking result can accompany a much larger fiat gain if market demand raises the token price. That price movement is investment-market exposure, not evidence that the staking mechanism produced a higher real yield.

Calling token inflation “free yield”
Newly issued tokens increase your balance, but they can dilute holders who do not stake. Compare your reward rate with supply growth before calling it a real gain.
Subtracting rates without checking denominators
APY minus inflation is a rough shortcut. Use the ratio formula when both figures describe the same period, and disclose whether the inflation figure means issuance or total-supply change.

Comparing gross and net quotes
A protocol’s gross rate and a provider’s customer rate may differ because of commission, fees, custody and compounding. Put those deductions in the calculation rather than treating the quotes as interchangeable.
Treating a historical average as a promise
The October 2024 Ethereum and Solana figures are dated observations. Solana’s epoch rate and Ethereum’s active-balance economics can change, so a past average cannot establish today’s return.
Ignoring liquidity and penalties
A high annualized number is less useful if your funds are locked during a market decline or if poor validator performance reduces rewards. Read the unbonding, queue, uptime and slashing conditions before depositing.
Assuming all “inflation” statistics are interchangeable
Issuance, change in total supply and the change in a staker’s fractional ownership use different denominators. A protocol may publish one while an analytics provider estimates another. Name the measure explicitly instead of presenting a single inflation percentage as definitive.

Annualization multiplies or compounds a short observation. It can exaggerate a temporary result when active stake, validator performance, commissions or market conditions change. Treat an epoch quote as a current estimate, not a fixed coupon.

What a careful staking return statement should say
A defensible statement includes the network, validator or provider, gross or net basis, APR or APY convention, compounding assumption, inflation definition, fees, observation date and currency. For example: “Net token reward estimated at X% APY after a Y% commission, compared with Z% annual supply growth for the same period; fiat return is not included.” This wording prevents a token-unit estimate from being mistaken for a purchasing-power guarantee.
The central conclusion is straightforward: nominal APY measures additional native tokens, while real yield requires a stated benchmark. Use supply-share yield to assess dilution, a token-price calculation to assess market purchasing power, and a fully netted rate to compare actual staking choices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is staking APY real yield or just new token inflation?
It is primarily a token-unit reward estimate. It becomes a positive supply-share yield only when your net reward rate exceeds the relevant token-supply growth, and it can still be a negative fiat return if the token price falls.
How do I calculate the real return on staking?
First deduct commission, platform fees and expected penalties from the reward credited to you. Then calculate (1 + net staking rate) / (1 + matching-period token inflation) − 1 for supply-share yield. For a fiat return, apply the token-price change separately.
Why does my staking APY change every epoch?
Annualized rewards are based on changing protocol conditions. On Solana, inflation, total active stake, validator uptime, vote credits and commission can change each approximately two-day epoch. Ethereum’s active balance, validator count, duties and fee burn also affect its rate.
Does a high APY mean I am beating inflation?
Not necessarily. Compare the net rate that reaches your account with the same-period measure of supply growth. A gross APY can look high before commission, penalties and compounding assumptions are included.
What is the difference between staking APR, APY and real yield?
APR is a simple annualized rate, while APY assumes compounding at a stated interval. Real yield is not a separate quoting convention: it is a result adjusted for a chosen benchmark, such as token-supply growth or fiat purchasing power.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow much ETH do I need to run my own validator?
Ethereum documentation lists 32 ETH for a self-managed validator. Pooled and liquid options can reduce the capital or hardware burden but add fees, custody, smart-contract or liquidity risks.
Are Ethereum and Solana staking rates directly comparable?
Only after matching the date, rate basis, inflation definition, fees, validator performance and scope. Historical October 2024 averages were about 3.46% APY for Ethereum and 6.73% for Solana, but those figures are not fixed current rates.
Can staking produce a positive return when the token price falls?
Yes. Your token balance and share of supply can rise while the market value in dollars or euros falls. Token-unit, supply-share and fiat returns should be reported separately.
The Bottom Line
Nominal APY tells you how many additional native-token units a staking arrangement may produce under stated assumptions. A meaningful real-yield comparison requires a net rate, a clearly defined supply or price benchmark, matching dates, and an accounting of validator performance, fees and liquidity. Calculate token-share yield first; then measure fiat performance separately.
