For reservation work that must survive restarts, retry safely, run at a controlled rate, or recover after a worker fails, use a durable job queue or database-backed job system. Cron is useful for starting predictable periodic scans; a Node.js timer can handle best-effort work in one long-lived process. Neither should decide whether a reservation is still valid. Keep reservation state and capacity authoritative in the database, and make every handler safe to run more than once.
Queue or cron: which fits reservation work?
These tools solve different problems. A scheduler decides when to start work; a queue manages work after it has been submitted. A common design uses both: cron or a scheduler periodically finds due work and enqueues it, then workers process durable jobs with bounded concurrency and retries.
| Option | Best fit | Tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| Node.js timer or lightweight in-process scheduler | A single service needs a periodic trigger, a later scan can repeat the work, and timing drift is acceptable. | Callbacks are not guaranteed to run at an exact time, and process uptime and deployment topology affect execution. Define how a later run recovers missed periods. Node.js timers documentation says callback timing and ordering are not guaranteed. |
| OS or platform cron | A simple recurring command or reconciliation scan, especially when the hosting platform owns scheduling. | Cron starts a process or command; by itself, it does not provide application-level per-job retries, rate limiting, or lifecycle tracking. |
| Durable queue, such as BullMQ | Work needs delayed execution, retries, worker concurrency, failure recovery, or rate limiting shared across workers. | Requires operating and monitoring a queue backend, and handlers must be idempotent. BullMQ documents at-least-once delivery in worst-case scenarios. BullMQ overview |
| Database-backed queue | You want queue state in a relational database or want to avoid operating a separate Redis service. | Check supported database versions, connection capacity, and backend maturity. BullMQ’s optional PostgreSQL backend requires PostgreSQL 13 or later, recommends 14 or later, and uses the pg package; its documentation describes Redis as the more battle-tested option. BullMQ documentation |
| Custom PostgreSQL queue table | Queue needs are modest and specific, and your team is prepared to own locking, leases, retries, cleanup, and monitoring. | SKIP LOCKED is a building block, not a complete queue system. PostgreSQL cautions that skipping locked rows gives an inconsistent view, though it can avoid lock contention among consumers reading queue-like tables. PostgreSQL 11.22 SELECT documentation |
There is no documented universal workload threshold at which one of these choices becomes faster. Decide based on recovery needs, schedule and time-zone semantics, rate-limit scope, retry and dead-letter handling, contention, backend operations, and the monitoring your team can maintain.

Rate limiting and concurrency are separate controls. A rate limit controls how much work starts or is processed over time; concurrency limits how many jobs run at once. BullMQ documents both controls. Its rate limiter applies queue-wide across workers using that queue, and rate-limited jobs remain waiting rather than being discarded. BullMQ rate-limiting guide

Choose the queue and limiter scope to match the constrained resource. If an external API allows a shared number of requests across all workers, a queue-wide limiter can coordinate those workers. If the limit is per customer or per account, do not assume BullMQ’s current queue limiter provides that scope: the group-key example in older documentation is explicitly valid only before BullMQ 3.0. Model the required scope deliberately and verify the API supported by your installed version.
Keep the database in charge of reservation correctness
A queued job is a request to attempt work, not proof that the reservation is still valid. The payload may be stale when a worker runs, and at-least-once delivery means a handler may run again after a retry or failure. Before an irreversible action, re-read the reservation and check its current state under a transaction or an equivalent guarded update.

- HARDWARE INCLUDED: Rolling computer/data rack includes cage nuts and screws to mount equipment, easy to read Units (U) and depth adjustment markings, cable management hooks for organization, and required assembly tools
- THE IT PRO'S CHOICE: Designed and built for IT Professionals, this 42U rack is backed for 2-years, including free lifetime 24/5 multi-lingual technical assistance
- Use database constraints and transactions where appropriate to protect uniqueness and capacity.
- Give a job a stable identity or domain idempotency key where supported, but also make the actual operation idempotent. Preventing duplicate enqueues alone does not protect against retries, crashes, or repeated external side effects.
- Keep reservation status, expiry, and capacity in authoritative storage. Do not rely on a timer firing at a precise instant to release a reservation.
Use cron or schedules to trigger repeatable reconciliation
For reservation expiry, cleanup, or other periodic work, let a schedule trigger a scan or enqueue due jobs. Design the scan to be repeatable: it should select work from current stored state and safely tolerate being run again. This recovers missed work without treating a single timer callback as the source of truth.
In-process Node.js timers are especially dependent on process lifetime and event-loop activity. The Node.js documentation states: “Node.js makes no guarantees about the exact timing of when callbacks will fire, nor of their ordering.” Node.js timers API That makes timers suitable for approximate triggers, not exact reservation deadlines.

Choose and operate the queue backend
BullMQ with Redis
BullMQ documents delayed and scheduled work, retries, worker concurrency, and recovery after process crashes; it characterizes delivery as at-least-once in worst-case scenarios. BullMQ overview Redis is its default backend and is described in BullMQ’s backend documentation as the more battle-tested option. BullMQ documentation This is a practical fit when queue lifecycle features and shared rate control matter enough to justify operating the separate backend.
BullMQ with PostgreSQL
BullMQ also documents an optional PostgreSQL backend. It requires PostgreSQL 13 or later, recommends PostgreSQL 14 or later, and requires the pg package. BullMQ documentation Confirm those requirements against the current documentation and the exact BullMQ version in your application before adopting it; database connection capacity and backend maturity remain operational considerations.

A custom PostgreSQL table
PostgreSQL’s FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED can allow multiple consumers to claim queue-like rows without waiting on rows already locked by another worker. PostgreSQL explicitly warns that this returns an inconsistent view and is not suitable for general-purpose reads. PostgreSQL 11.22 locking clause documentation A custom queue still needs deliberate designs for leases, retries, visibility of failed work, cleanup, and monitoring; the locking clause does not supply those lifecycle features.

BullMQ’s v6 announcement says legacy repeatable-job APIs are removed in favor of Job Schedulers. Its migration guidance advises upgrading to a latest v5 version, replacing legacy APIs, recreating schedules as Job Schedulers, removing old Redis entries, and then deploying v6; it also provides a v5-to-v6 code mapping. Monitor whether reservation work is actually completing
Queue health alone does not prove reservation correctness. Monitor queue age, retry and failure counts, stuck or expired reservations, and reconciliation results. These signals help distinguish delayed processing from a reservation that is no longer valid or work that has stopped being discovered.
