If you’re searching for Node.js hosting, start with how your app runs—not a “best host” ranking. A persistent API or queue worker needs a service that keeps its process alive; a stateless endpoint with bursty traffic may fit short-lived serverless functions. Managed platforms reduce infrastructure work, while a VPS offers more control at the cost of maintenance.
Choose a hosting model before choosing a provider
Node.js hosting is not one interchangeable product category. Managed platform-as-a-service (PaaS), serverless functions, virtual private servers (VPSs), and shared hosting differ in how they run processes, scale, charge, and allocate operational work. The right fit depends on your application’s process lifetime, workload, and the time your team can spend administering infrastructure.
| Model | Deployment and operations | Process model | Scaling and cost considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed PaaS | Often deploy from Git or a CLI. The platform handles builds and some runtime and infrastructure tasks. | Persistent application processes are available on typical offerings; check worker support. | Scaling may be managed or usage-based. Check minimum always-on costs and whether free services sleep or have limits. |
| VPS | You get root access and configure the runtime, process supervisor, reverse proxy, TLS, patching, and deployment. | Persistent process. | Fixed capacity makes billing predictable, but you pay for idle resources and take on more maintenance. |
| Serverless functions | The platform manages the function runtime and deployment workflow. | Short-lived, stateless execution. | Often scales by request. Check duration, concurrency, and request limits; spikes or runaway requests can increase costs. |
| Shared hosting | Often managed through a control panel or FTP, with comparatively limited Node.js support. | Persistent processes and background workers may not be available. | A low headline price can come with runtime, port-binding, or process restrictions. |
This is a model-level overview, not a ranking. Fly.io’s guide explains these operating-model differences; as a provider-authored source, it is useful for context rather than independent validation of provider quality: Fly.io’s Node.js hosting guide.

Persistent web apps and background workers
For an Express API that must stay available, a Next.js server, or a worker that continuously processes a queue, look for an environment that supports persistent processes. A managed PaaS is a practical starting point if you want Git- or CLI-based deployment and less server administration. Confirm that the plan supports workers, the required instance stays available, and any database is included or priced separately.

Burst-driven, stateless endpoints
Serverless functions can suit handlers that finish quickly, keep no in-memory state between requests, and experience uneven traffic. They are a less natural fit for a continuously running worker. Before selecting one for an API, check execution duration, concurrency, request limits, and WebSocket support if your app needs it.
Root access and infrastructure control
A VPS suits teams that need to control the operating system, runtime configuration, or capacity directly and can maintain the server. That responsibility includes installing and updating Node.js, supervising processes, configuring a reverse proxy and TLS, applying security patches, and automating deployment.

Low-cost shared hosting
Do not treat a generic “Node.js supported” claim as proof that a host can run your application. Verify the supported Node version, whether you can bind the port your app needs, and whether persistent processes and background workers are allowed. If any of these are unclear, ask the provider before building your deployment around the service.

- Vercel: described as a fit for Next.js and frontend-heavy work. The comparison reports its Hobby plan as non-commercial with hard caps; treat that as a dated plan snapshot and verify current terms before choosing it.
- Railway: described as a push-to-deploy container option with usage-based pricing. Check which resources are billed and how your expected usage affects the bill.
- Render: described as a managed PaaS with workers and cron jobs. The comparison says its free web services are subject to spin-down, so confirm current availability and plan behavior if always-on service matters.
- Fly.io: described as a multi-region container VM option. Its guide outlines a Node.js deployment path using its CLI and Machines; treat that as provider-specific deployment information, not a comparative performance result.
- DigitalOcean App Platform: described by DigitalOcean as a managed service that deploys from a Git repository or container image and supports Node.js. DigitalOcean’s published entry-price statement is a snapshot, not a guaranteed current price; check current pricing for the resources and region you need.
These descriptions come from Geekflare’s comparison, updated August 20, 2026, and provider-authored material from DigitalOcean and Fly.io. They do not establish a universal winner, uptime ranking, or comparable application performance. Geekflare also discusses Cloudways, Kamatera, Heroku, hosting.com, Cloudflare Workers, and OVHcloud, but the comparison’s presence alone does not establish a fit for every Node.js workload.

Compare the full cost, not just the entry price
Compare providers against the same realistic workload. A fixed-capacity VPS charges for reserved resources whether or not they are busy; usage-based or invocation billing can track demand more closely but may climb during traffic spikes or runaway requests. Neither model is automatically cheaper without workload assumptions.
Quick Recap
- Describe two or more workload scenarios. For example, estimate an always-on API separately from a bursty webhook endpoint. Include expected traffic, compute, storage, and idle periods.
- Add the surrounding services. Account for database needs, storage, outbound traffic, team seats, and preview environments where relevant.
- Check operational limits. Review scaling controls, concurrency or duration caps, worker support, free-tier sleep behavior, and any minimum always-on resource cost.
- Verify today’s terms with the provider. Prices and plan limits change. DigitalOcean notes that its Heroku-alternative pricing and feature information was based on public documentation as of February 2026 and may vary by region and workload: DigitalOcean’s Heroku-alternatives overview.
Use this decision checklist
- Choose managed PaaS when you need a persistent web app or worker and want platform-managed builds and less infrastructure maintenance. Compare the monthly floor, worker support, database arrangement, scaling controls, and deployment limits.
- Consider serverless for short-lived, stateless handlers and bursty traffic. Confirm duration, concurrency, request, and WebSocket constraints before committing.
- Choose a VPS when root-level configuration and capacity control matter and your team can handle security, process supervision, TLS, and deployment automation.
- Use shared hosting only after checking the exact Node version, port binding, persistent-process policy, and worker support your app requires.
