To check a DNS TXT challenge in Node.js, call resolveTxt() from node:dns/promises, join the chunks within each returned record, and compare each complete record with the expected value. For ACME DNS-01, query _acme-challenge.<domain>. A match demonstrates control sufficient to answer that specific DNS challenge at that time; it does not establish legal ownership or identify the person or organization behind the domain.
Check a TXT value with Node.js
Node’s promise-based DNS API returns TXT data as an array of arrays. Each inner array contains the chunks of one TXT record, so join the chunks within each inner array before comparing the resulting complete record with the expected challenge value. Do not join every string in the outer result together: separate TXT records must remain separate.

Interpret the result without overstating it
For ACME DNS-01, the expected TXT value is a challenge response. RFC 8555 specifies a random challenge token with at least 128 bits of entropy; the ACME client combines it with its account key, computes a SHA-256 digest, and publishes the base64url-encoded digest at the validation name. The name is formed by prepending _acme-challenge to the domain being validated. The RFC describes the test as proving control by provisioning a designated TXT value for that validation name: RFC 8555, IETF Standards Track, March 2019.
In practical terms, a matching answer shows that the expected challenge value was available through the relevant DNS validation path when checked. It is not a legal-title check, an identity check, or evidence of control over every service associated with the domain. Japan Registry Services describes the mechanism as a challenge-response process in which a subscriber publishes a one-time secret in authoritative DNS for a service provider to query: JPRS, “Important Notes of Using Domain Name Ownership / Control Verification by DNS” (information current as of March 2023).

Separate a DNS error from a missing challenge
There are three materially different outcomes: the lookup failed, the lookup succeeded but returned no matching value, or the lookup succeeded and a complete record matched. Keep these outcomes distinct in application logic and logs.
- Lookup error:
resolveTxt()rejects. Report a DNS lookup failure, not a negative verification result. In particular, Node documents thatENOTFOUNDcan result from other lookup failures, including unavailable file descriptors, so it is not conclusive proof that the name does not exist. - No matching value: The query succeeded, but none of the complete TXT records matched the expected challenge. If the record may not yet be visible, use bounded polling appropriate to the provider and application.
- Match: A complete returned TXT record equals the expected value. This satisfies the value comparison for that particular check; apply the protocol’s other requirements as appropriate.
Node’s documented API behavior is described in the Node.js DNS documentation. Avoid labeling a domain “not controlled” merely because one lookup failed or did not yet return the value.

Choose the validation path that fits the available control
ACME supports more than one challenge method. DNS-01 checks whether the designated response can be published in DNS; HTTP-01 checks whether a challenge file can be served at a specific path under the domain. The right method depends on the control surface and operational setup, not on a universal rule that DNS is preferable.
- DNS access: Can the deployment publish the required TXT record, manually or through a DNS provider API?
- HTTP access: Can it serve the required challenge file at the specified path?
- TLS-ALPN access: Does the chosen ACME client and certificate authority support a TLS-ALPN challenge for the deployment?
- Automation and failure visibility: Can record updates be made safely, and can DNS visibility failures be distinguished from HTTP or TLS failures?
- Issuance policy: Should DNS policy restrict which certificate authorities, challenge methods, or ACME accounts may issue?
RFC 8555 defines DNS-01 and HTTP-01 challenge procedures; consult the RFC and the selected CA and client’s current requirements when choosing a method.

Use DNSSEC and CAA as separate safeguards
DNSSEC helps protect DNS answers
Japan Registry Services recommends that service providers enable DNSSEC validation on the full-service resolvers used for verification and that subscribers deploy DNSSEC on authoritative servers. DNSSEC safeguards the DNS data path; it does not change the TXT comparison or turn a challenge match into proof of legal ownership. See the JPRS guidance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →CAA sets certificate-issuance policy
CAA is separate from the TXT challenge. A TXT match checks the requested DNS-01 response; CAA records express which certificate authorities may issue for a domain. Let’s Encrypt documents the issue property for ordinary issuance and issuewild for wildcard issuance when separately specified; its CAA identifier is letsencrypt.org. CAA records with the same property type are additive: if any one permits issuance, issuance is allowed.
Best Value

- Easy sharing and syncing - Safely access and share files and media from anywhere, and keep clients, colleagues and collaborators on the same page
- Automated Backup Protection - Set-and-forget backups for Macs, PCs and mobile devices to multiple destinations including cloud and external drives
- Home Security System - Record and monitor your property 24/7 with support for multiple IP cameras and remote viewing

CAA can also constrain validation methods with validationmethods (Let’s Encrypt lists http-01, dns-01, and tls-alpn-01) and constrain issuance to an ACME account with accounturi. The account restriction can help defend against temporary domain hijacking by a party that lacks the authorized account key. These policies govern issuance authorization; they do not provide the TXT value or implement Node’s DNS lookup. Details are in Let’s Encrypt’s CAA documentation.
