Polyphony Digital’s refreshed Gran Turismo 7 opening movie runs for six minutes and 40 seconds. Released with the game’s Spec IV update, it is less a quick menu video than a statement of purpose: cars, racing and the history of driving are central content for the studio, not decoration around a series of events.
What is the new Gran Turismo 7 opening movie?
The new opening is a six-minute-40-second film added to the PS5 and PS4 versions of Gran Turismo 7 alongside Spec IV. Its emphasis is automotive culture and the evolution of the automobile, framing the game as a celebration of why people drive as well as a collection of races.

That makes the movie unusually specific about Polyphony Digital’s priorities. A conventional racing-game intro might move quickly from logos to competition. This one gives the subject itself room: real-world cars, their design history and the act of driving are treated as reasons to watch.

How long is it, and how does it compare with the original?

What changed in the Spec IV update?
Spec IV is a major Gran Turismo 7 update arriving in two releases during 2026. Sony says the first part is scheduled for October and the second for December. Together, they begin the run-up to Gran Turismo’s 30th anniversary in 2027.

The car is the subject, not just the vehicle
Polyphony Digital’s approach makes more sense when Gran Turismo is viewed as a catalog of automotive history. The series began in 1997 and has evolved alongside PlayStation. Its games present manufacturers, eras and engineering choices as things worth examining, even when the player is not actively competing.

A global audience gives that history reach
Polyphony’s official catalog reports 100 million Gran Turismo sell-through units worldwide as of June 2025. The same catalog describes particularly strong followings in Europe and North America. That scale gives the studio an unusually large audience for introducing car culture to people who may not already know the historical context behind a model or racing tradition.
The studio builds systems around driving expertise
The car-first philosophy also appears in the Gran Turismo Sophy project. Sony’s official project page describes Sophy as a “revolutionary superhuman racing AI agent” that mastered Gran Turismo Sport. Sony AI, Polyphony Digital and Sony Interactive Entertainment developed the collaboration to race against and elevate the experience of top Gran Turismo drivers.
Sophy is not the same thing as an opening cinematic, but it illustrates the same priority: driving is treated as a discipline to model, study and improve, not merely an excuse to move a vehicle between checkpoints.
Is Gran Turismo 7 available on PS5 and PS4?
Yes. The official Gran Turismo catalog lists Gran Turismo 7 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. It is dated March 4, 2022, and credits Polyphony Digital as developer for Sony Interactive Entertainment. The refreshed opening therefore belongs to a game released across both console generations, although the exact presentation can depend on the version being played.
What the new movie says about Gran Turismo 7
The practical takeaway is not simply that the new video lasts six minutes and 40 seconds. Its length, subject matter and timing all point to the same identity statement: Polyphony believes automotive history and the pleasure of driving deserve attention in their own right.
Launching the movie with Spec IV also connects that identity to the franchise’s next milestone. The two-part 2026 update starts the approach to the 30th anniversary in 2027, while new circuits, cars, competitions and accessibility-minded features keep the game focused on participation. The result is an opening that explains why the series exists before the update asks players to race.
