Physics, Chemistry, and Physiology or Medicine are separate Nobel categories, but their boundaries are not rigid. Physics follows Alfred Nobel’s wording about the most important discovery or invention in physics; Chemistry covers the most important chemical discovery or improvement; and Physiology or Medicine covers important discoveries across a broad biomedical field as well as clinical medicine. A discovery can have consequences in several disciplines, so the decisive question is what contribution the Nobel citation recognizes and which category’s awarding institution selected it.
The three prizes at a glance
The category names come from Alfred Nobel’s will, while modern science has made the borders between fields increasingly porous. The table below separates the original wording from the way the categories are interpreted today.
| Prize | Wording in Nobel’s will | Modern scope | Who awards it | 2025 example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nobel Prize in Physics | “The most important discovery or invention within the field of physics” | Fundamental discoveries and inventions about physical phenomena, matter, energy, forces, space, time, and physical systems | Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences | John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis, for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit |
| Nobel Prize in Chemistry | “The most important chemical discovery or improvement” | Discoveries and improvements involving substances, molecular structures, reactions, materials, and chemical methods | Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences | Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi, for the development of metal-organic frameworks |
| Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine | “The most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine” | A broad biomedical field that includes physiology, disease mechanisms, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and some areas of behavioral and plant biology | Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet | Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi, for discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance |
The 2025 examples are the latest completed prize year represented in the official overview published in 2026. They illustrate the range of each category, not a permanent rule for classifying every future discovery.
What Alfred Nobel’s will actually says
The formal distinction begins with Nobel’s will. The relevant sentence awards one part of the fortune to the person who made “the most important discovery or invention within the field of physics,” another to the person who made “the most important chemical discovery or improvement,” and another to the person who made “the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine.”
#1 Best Overall
Those words are a foundation rather than a modern checklist. Nobel wrote them before quantum mechanics, molecular biology, medical imaging, nanotechnology, and many other fields had their present meanings. The prize-awarding institutions therefore apply the categories to contemporary work while preserving the basic idea that the award honors a particularly important discovery or improvement.
“Most important” also does not mean that the prizes are ranked against one another. There is no official scale showing that physics is more difficult than chemistry, or that medicine is more prestigious than either. Each committee evaluates work within its own category.
What the Nobel Prize in Physics recognizes
Its central subject
The Physics prize recognizes a discovery or invention whose central contribution is physical. Typical questions include how matter and energy behave, how forces act, how physical systems change, and what fundamental laws or effects can be demonstrated. The work may be theoretical, experimental, technological, or a combination of those approaches.
A physics award does not require the subject to be remote from everyday technology. An instrument, measurement technique, or engineered system can qualify when it reveals a fundamental physical effect or makes a decisive physical discovery possible. Conversely, a project can use sophisticated physics without being recognized in Physics if the Nobel citation’s main contribution is chemical or biomedical.
The 2025 illustration
In 2025, John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis were recognized “for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit.” The wording points to two physical phenomena demonstrated in an electrical circuit: quantum-mechanical tunnelling on a macroscopic scale and quantized energy states. The example shows that a Physics citation can concern a practical circuit while still honoring a fundamental quantum result.
What does not decide the category
- The presence of a medical application does not automatically move a discovery into Physiology or Medicine.
- The fact that a material contains molecules does not automatically make the work Chemistry.
- Using a computer, instrument, or engineered device does not by itself make an achievement Physics.
The committee’s judgment focuses on the discovery or invention being honored, not on every field that later uses it.
What the Nobel Prize in Chemistry recognizes
Its central subject
The Chemistry prize recognizes an important chemical discovery or improvement. That description includes the behavior and transformation of substances, ways of making or analyzing molecules, advances in materials, and methods that let scientists control chemical structure or reactions.

Rank #2
Chemistry is often described as the science of matter at the molecular level, but that shorthand should not be treated as an exclusive boundary. Chemical work can draw on physics, biology, engineering, and medicine. The relevant issue is whether the prize-winning contribution is fundamentally a chemical discovery or improvement as framed by the Nobel citation.
The 2025 illustration
Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi received the 2025 Chemistry prize “for the development of metal-organic frameworks.” Metal-organic frameworks are materials built from metal-containing units and organic molecules into porous structures. The citation identifies the chemical development itself; possible uses in storage, separation, sensing, or catalysis do not change the category.
Why Chemistry can overlap with other fields
A chemical discovery may explain a physical property, enable a biological process, or produce a medical tool. The Chemistry category can therefore include work that could reasonably be discussed alongside Physics or Physiology or Medicine. The deciding question is which scientific contribution the award recognizes, not whether another discipline benefits from it.
What the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine recognizes
The formal name matters
The official name is Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, not simply “Nobel Prize in Medicine.” “Medicine” is useful shorthand after the full name has been introduced, but the longer title explains why the category includes more than clinical treatment.
In Alfred Nobel’s era, “physiology” had a broader meaning than it often has in everyday speech. The Nobel interpretation has consequently extended across biomedical science as well as clinical medicine. A winning discovery may concern how an organism functions, how disease develops, how immunity is regulated, or how a diagnostic or therapeutic approach works.
The category’s breadth
Official Nobel histories give examples that would surprise anyone who equates the prize only with drugs or hospital procedures. The category has included behavioral science, computer-assisted tomography, and plant genetics. Those examples do not mean that every behavioral, imaging, or plant study is eligible; they show that the category can encompass foundational biological and biomedical discoveries beyond bedside treatment.
The 2025 illustration
Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi received the 2025 prize “for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.” Peripheral immune tolerance describes mechanisms that prevent immune defenses from attacking the body’s own tissues outside the central immune-development sites. The citation identifies a physiological and biomedical discovery, even though the work may inform future treatments for autoimmune disease.
Why “Medicine” is not a strict clinical-only category
Calling the prize “Medicine” can create a misleading picture. Clinical trials, surgery, drugs, and public-health interventions can all be relevant, but they are not requirements. The category also recognizes discoveries about normal physiology, disease biology, immunity, nervous-system function, imaging, and other biomedical processes.
That broad interpretation follows the wording “within the domain of physiology or medicine.” It gives the Nobel Assembly room to honor a discovery that changes understanding of living systems even when the immediate result is not a treatment. The award is about the importance of the discovery, not whether a patient can use it directly on the day the prize is announced.
Where the borders overlap
One discovery can matter to several disciplines
Modern research rarely stays inside one department. A new imaging method may depend on physics, require chemical materials, and transform diagnosis. A molecular mechanism may be central to chemistry and also explain a disease. An engineered device may reveal a physical effect and later become a medical instrument.
Official Nobel commentary warns against rules such as “molecules always belong to Chemistry” or “anything involving patients belongs to Medicine.” The same body of work can fairly be viewed through more than one disciplinary lens.
Historical examples
Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s discovery of X-rays illustrates the point. X-rays became important to medicine and chemistry, yet the Nobel award recognized the physical discovery in Physics. Conversely, molecular genetics has received Chemistry awards, showing that a biological subject can be honored for its chemical contribution.

Chemistry’s history also contains work that could reasonably be described as chemistry and physics or chemistry and medicine. These precedents do not make the categories interchangeable. They show why the citation and the recognized contribution matter more than a subject-area label.
A practical way to classify a discovery
- Identify the breakthrough. Ask what was newly discovered, invented, or improved, rather than listing every later application.
- Read the award citation. Its wording states the contribution the institution chose to honor.
- Match the core mechanism. A physical law or phenomenon points toward Physics; a chemical structure, reaction, material, or method points toward Chemistry; a physiological or biomedical mechanism points toward Physiology or Medicine.
- Check for legitimate overlap. If two descriptions fit, explain the connection instead of pretending the fields have a hard border.
Who decides which category a discovery belongs in?
The awarding institutions
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards both Physics and Chemistry. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards Physiology or Medicine. These are separate institutions and separate prize processes; there is no single committee that assigns every scientific discovery to a category.
Committees and final decisions
Nobel Committees review nominations, seek evaluations, and propose laureates. The relevant prize-awarding institution makes the final decision. The committee’s role is to assess the scientific contribution, while the institution formally selects the laureates and approves the citation.
Why current nominee lists are unavailable
Nominations are confidential for 50 years under the Nobel Foundation statutes. As a result, a public list of nominees for a current prize year should not be treated as available official information. Public announcements identify laureates and explain the recognized work, not the complete set of people considered.

The official Nobel Prize overview, published by Nobel Prize Outreach in 2026, reports these cumulative totals for the period 1901–2025:
| Category | Prizes awarded | Laureates |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 119 | 230 |
| Chemistry | 117 | 200 |
| Physiology or Medicine | 116 | 232 |
Across all Nobel Prizes and the economics prize through 2025, the same overview reports 633 awards to 1,026 people and organisations. The category figures count awards and laureates; they do not measure scientific difficulty, social value, prestige, or the quality of one field relative to another. Differences in totals can reflect the number of years a prize was awarded, shared prizes, and the way laureates are counted.
How to read a Nobel citation accurately
A citation is intentionally compact. It names the laureate or laureates and states the contribution recognized by the awarding institution. To understand the distinction among categories, read the citation in this order:

- Separate discovery from consequence. A later application can be medically important without changing a Physics or Chemistry award into a Medicine award.
- Note the year and institution. This prevents a current example from being presented as a timeless definition.
- Explain overlap explicitly. If the work crosses disciplines, identify the central contribution and acknowledge the other fields involved.
Common misconceptions
“Medicine” means only treating patients
False. The formal category includes physiology and a broad biomedical scope. Behavioral science, computer-assisted tomography, and plant genetics are among the examples used in official histories to demonstrate that breadth.
Every discovery belongs to exactly one scientific box
False. A discovery can have equal scientific relevance to more than one discipline. The prize category reflects the contribution selected for recognition, not an assertion that other fields are irrelevant.
Anything molecular must be Chemistry
False. Molecular genetics, immune mechanisms, and other molecular subjects can be recognized in different categories depending on the discovery the citation emphasizes.
Anything used in hospitals must be Medicine
False. Röntgen’s X-ray discovery was honored in Physics even though medical imaging became one of its most consequential uses.
The number of prizes proves which field is most important
False. The 1901–2025 totals are historical counts, not a ranking system. They cannot establish that one category is harder, more prestigious, or more valuable.
Current nominee lists are public
False. Nobel nominations remain confidential for 50 years under the Nobel Foundation statutes. Public information about current years centers on laureates and their citations.
The simplest answer to “Physics vs. Chemistry vs. Medicine”
Physics honors a fundamental physical discovery or invention. Chemistry honors a chemical discovery or improvement. Physiology or Medicine honors an important discovery about how living systems function, how disease works, or how biomedical knowledge advances, including clinical medicine but not limited to it.
Those descriptions are reliable starting points, not watertight borders. When a discovery sits between fields, identify the specific contribution in the official citation and explain why the awarding institution treated that contribution as Physics, Chemistry, or Physiology or Medicine.
