Nobel laureates are not chosen through public applications or open voting. Each prize committee confidentially invites qualified nominators—such as academy members, university professors, researchers, parliamentarians and previous laureates—to submit candidates. Committees check eligibility, investigate the candidates with specialist help and recommend finalists; the responsible prize-awarding institution makes the final decision. The chosen laureate is contacted before the result is announced publicly in early October, and the award ceremony takes place on 10 December.
That outline applies across the Nobel categories, but committee procedures, nominators and announcement schedules differ by category. The statutes provide the common framework, while each awarding institution’s rules and annual calendar determine operational details.
Who can nominate someone for a Nobel Prize?
Nominations are by invitation, not by open submission. Each category’s Nobel Committee sends requests to people whose professional position or experience qualifies them to nominate. Typical invitees include members of academies, university professors, researchers, parliamentarians and previous laureates. The eligible group is not identical for every category, so an invitation for one prize does not automatically authorize a nomination for another.

The nomination is normally valid for the current prize year only. A person who is not selected in one year does not simply remain on a permanent ballot; a qualified nominator must submit a nomination again for a later year.
Can an ordinary member of the public nominate?
Not unless that person has been invited and meets the relevant category’s qualifications. There is no general public nomination form. Sending an unsolicited letter or email does not create a valid nomination.
Can I nominate myself?
No. The Nobel Foundation statutes state: “A personal application for an award shall not be considered.” A candidate cannot turn an application, résumé or self-promotional submission into a Nobel nomination.

A qualified person may nominate someone else, including a colleague or a person whose work they know through professional research. The committee still evaluates the nomination independently; being nominated does not guarantee that the candidate will be investigated in depth, placed on a later list or selected.
When are Nobel nominations submitted?
Invitation and nomination work begins in September and runs to the annual cutoff in late January or at the start of February. Two dates appear in official material, and they describe the same annual boundary in different ways:
- 31 January: the operational deadline used in Nobel Foundation annual-review and media descriptions, including the 2024 annual review published in 2025.
- 1 February: the wording in section 7 of the Nobel Foundation statutes, which refers to submissions during the preceding twelve months up to February 1.
For a particular prize year, nominators should follow the deadline and instructions in the committee’s invitation. The date can be expressed as 31 January in practical calendars even though the governing statute says 1 February.

How does the Nobel Prize selection process work?
The process takes most of a year. Its broad sequence is shared by the categories, although the annual review notes that procedures and committee arrangements vary somewhat.

Committees send invitations to qualified nominators in September. Invitees submit written nominations and supporting material by the annual cutoff. Personal applications are excluded, and late or ineligible submissions do not become part of the valid candidate pool.
2. Eligibility checks and compilation
After the deadline, the committee confirms that each nominator was entitled to submit a nomination. It records the valid names and compiles the initial list for that prize year. This administrative check comes before substantive comparison of the candidates.
3. Narrowing the list
During the spring and summer, the committee reduces the broad list in stages. The narrowing is not a public vote or a published ranking. It is an internal evaluation in which the committee decides which candidates merit more extensive examination.
4. Domestic and international expert assessment
Remaining candidates are studied in depth with help from experts in the relevant fields. The committee can seek assessments from specialists in the home country and abroad. This stage allows the committee to test the importance, originality and documented impact of the work rather than relying only on the nominator’s description.
5. Committee report and recommendation
Each Nobel Committee prepares a report and recommendation for the institution that awards its category’s prize. The committee’s role is therefore investigative and advisory. It does not itself represent a universal Nobel electorate, and its recommendation is not the final legal decision.

6. Final decision by the awarding institution
The responsible prize-awarding institution reviews the committee’s recommendation and makes the laureate decision. The main institutional assignments are:

The institutions’ procedures are category-specific, but the distinction is consistent: committees develop and recommend candidates, while the designated academy or Norwegian Nobel Committee chooses the laureate.
Who actually chooses the Nobel laureates?
The answer depends on the category. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences chooses the laureates in Physics and Economic Sciences. The Swedish Academy chooses the Literature laureate. The Norwegian Nobel Committee chooses the Peace laureate.
That means “the Nobel Committee” is not one single body selecting every prize. There is a Nobel Committee for each category, and the relevant awarding institution has the final say for that category. A committee’s recommendation can be influential without being the final decision.
Are Nobel nominations and deliberations confidential?
Yes. Nomination names, committee discussions and evaluation material are handled confidentially rather than released during the current selection cycle. The confidentiality protects nominators, candidates and experts while the committee is comparing evidence.
Nobel Foundation annual-review material has described a historical confidentiality period of 50 years for nomination and evaluation documents. That period is a rule for archival access, not a promise that every detail becomes public immediately after the announcement. Current candidates and nomination lists should not be treated as verified public information.

A nomination also has no predictive status. It shows that an eligible nominator proposed a person for that prize year; it does not mean the committee endorsed the candidate or that the person is likely to win.

Laureates are selected in the autumn and announced publicly in early October. The Nobel Prize organizations publish category-specific press conferences, so the exact date and time vary by prize and by year.
The annual calendar can change. Anyone planning coverage, a classroom event or a live watch should check the official announcement schedule for the relevant year instead of relying on a recurring weekday or an old calendar.
Do laureates find out before the public?
Yes. Once a decision is made, the selected laureate is contacted first. Nobel Prize Outreach’s detailed media information for Nobel Week 2025 states that laureates are notified and then the general public is informed at press conferences in early October.
Notification can involve practical difficulties such as time zones, travel or an unreachable telephone number, but the order remains private notification followed by the public announcement. A person who hears a result at the press conference is therefore not learning it at the same time as the laureate in the normal procedure.

The award ceremony is held on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. The Nobel Foundation statutes designate that date as the Foundation’s festival day. At the ceremony, laureates receive the prize amount, diploma and medal.

The announcement and the ceremony serve different purposes. Early October identifies the laureates; 10 December is the formal presentation. A laureate may therefore be publicly known for roughly two months before receiving the medal and diploma at the ceremony.

Why a nomination does not equal a shortlist or a win
Several different events are often collapsed into the word “nomination.” An invited academic’s submission is only the beginning. The committee may reject it during eligibility or early evaluation, keep it for further study, seek expert reports, or recommend a different candidate. Even a committee recommendation must go to the awarding institution for the final decision.

Because the nomination is generally valid only for the current prize year, an old claim that someone was “nominated for the Nobel Prize” needs a year and a source. It should not be presented as evidence that the person is a current finalist or that a future award is expected.
How the categories differ
The common framework makes the process recognizable, but category differences matter when interpreting a deadline, a nominator’s eligibility or an announcement event. Physics and Economic Sciences share the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences as awarding institution. Literature is decided by the Swedish Academy, while Peace is decided by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Their committee composition, invited nominator pools and working calendars can therefore differ.
The safest way to answer a category-specific question is to separate the Foundation’s general statute from the institution’s current rules and calendar. The statute supplies the common legal framework; the institution’s annual information supplies the practical details for that year.

- “The committee alone chooses the winner.” The committee recommends; the category’s awarding institution decides.
- “The deadline is always February 1.” The statute says 1 February, while operational Nobel Foundation material commonly says 31 January.
- “A public list shows all nominees.” Nomination and evaluation information is confidential during the process.
- “The announcement and ceremony are the same event.” Announcements occur in early October; the presentation is on 10 December.
- “A nomination predicts a win.” It is a current-year proposal, not an endorsement or forecast of selection.
