No. A smart TV’s internet and app features do not guarantee that it can record television. PVR support depends on the exact TV model and region, and may be limited to recording digital broadcasts received through the TV’s built-in tuner onto a compatible USB drive. Some models offer only temporary live-TV pause and rewind; others offer neither. Check the model’s specifications and manual before buying storage or counting on recording.
What PVR means—and how it differs from Timeshift
A personal video recorder (PVR) saves a broadcast program so you can watch it later; on supported TVs, that may include scheduling a future recording. Timeshift is usually a temporary buffer of the broadcast you are watching, letting you pause or rewind recent content. It is not necessarily a saved recording you can keep for later.
The distinction matters because a TV may support one function without offering the other. For example, LG’s US Timeshift guidance describes temporary rewind data that is lost if you change channels. A model-specific LG owner’s manual describes DVR as recording live TV for later review, but that capability should not be assumed for every LG model, let alone every smart TV. LG support guidance and the manual for the precise model explain what is available.
What a smart TV can record depends on the signal
Recording support is generally about broadcast television received by the TV, not everything displayed on its screen. Samsung’s Germany support guidance says its PVR feature requires a signal from the TV’s integrated tuner; it does not record a program supplied by an external receiver. Sony’s 2025 guide describes supported recording for authorized digital TV and radio broadcasts and says encrypted signals cannot be recorded. These are brand- and model-specific rules, not universal specifications. Do not assume a TV can record a streaming app or an HDMI-connected device.

Broadcaster permissions, encryption, and access to paid channels may also affect whether a particular broadcast can be recorded. The TV’s manual and the channel or service’s terms are the right places to check for those limits.
USB storage does not add PVR to an unsupported TV
Where recording or Timeshift is supported, manufacturers may require an external USB hard drive and may impose their own capacity, connection, or setup rules. A USB port alone does not establish that the TV can record. The drive may need to be connected directly, registered or formatted by the TV, and reserved for recordings. Formatting can erase existing files, so back them up before setup.

Do not buy a drive based only on another brand’s capacity recommendation. Confirm the requirements for your full TV model and country first.

Recording does not necessarily create a portable video file. Samsung says its PVR recordings are DRM-protected and cannot be played on a computer or another TV. Sony likewise says recordings on its recognized USB HDD can be played only on that TV. If you need to archive or move programs between devices, check the exact model’s playback and copy restrictions before relying on its recorder.

How to check whether a particular TV has PVR
- Find the complete model code. Check the label on the TV, its settings screen, receipt, or product listing. A brand or smart-TV platform name is not enough.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page for that model. Search the specifications and manual for “PVR,” “DVR,” “recording,” “USB HDD recording,” and “Timeshift.” Samsung’s Germany guidance directs buyers to model specifications and a PVR feature filter. Samsung Germany support
- Verify country and regional availability. Sony explicitly limits USB HDD recording to certain regions, countries, and models, so a feature listed for another market may not apply to your TV. Sony Help Guide
- Confirm the source you want to record. Check whether the feature works with the TV’s built-in antenna, cable, or satellite tuner, and whether it excludes an external box, encrypted channel, or app. Follow the exact model’s instructions.
- Check the drive and setup requirements. Confirm capacity, connection method, formatting or registration steps, and whether the drive will be dedicated to TV use. Back up its contents before formatting.
- Check recording limits and playback rules. Look for scheduling options, tuner or simultaneous-recording limits, and whether recordings can be watched on other devices. Those details vary by model and are not established across manufacturers by the examples here.
If the TV has no PVR
A compatible external recorder may be an option, but it is a separate device and is not made possible simply by connecting a USB drive to the TV. Compatibility depends on the country’s broadcast standard, the signal source, and the available inputs. Check those requirements for the specific recorder and television before buying.

The cited manufacturer documents establish that PVR availability varies; they do not provide a reliable market-wide count of how many smart TVs include it. The LG and Sony figures above are specific storage or Timeshift guidance, not estimates of feature prevalence. Treat PVR as a model-specific capability rather than a standard feature of smart TVs.
