Short answer: In the current Early Access build of No Rest for the Wicked, you do not select a formal warrior, rogue, or mage class when creating a character. Your role comes from attributes, weapon requirements, equipment, and the skills or runes attached to your loadout. Progression is similarly build-driven: you improve weapons and gear, collect and craft resources, upgrade property, and choose how much combat difficulty to take on through Realm Tiers. Online co-op supports up to four players in a persistent shared Realm, while the exact way to respec—and its cost—still needs confirmation for the version you are playing.
Classes in the current Early Access build
There is no formal class choice at character creation
A new Early Access character does not choose a fixed class such as warrior, rogue, or mage. Instead, your playstyle develops from the attributes you raise, the weapons you can equip, your armor and other equipment, and the skills or runes supported by that loadout. Two characters can therefore fill similar battlefield roles while using different combinations of requirements, moves, and abilities.
This system rewards experimentation but removes the familiar “pick a class and follow its preset tree” decision. Your first meaningful choice is a weapon direction, not a class label. A weapon’s attribute requirements determine whether you can use it effectively, and its reach, attack rhythm, stamina demand, defensive options, and available skills shape how you approach encounters.

Moon Studios has previewed a reworked class and progression system for the 1.0 release. The announced direction includes 24 classes, more than 280 traits, six trait slots, and six factions. Those numbers describe the planned 1.0 design, not a guarantee that every class mechanic is already live in Early Access. The system can still change before release.

The 1.0 launch window itself has changed. Moon Studios’ later news index moved the launch from October 2026 to March 2027. Treat any explanation of the formal class system as a preview until the studio publishes the final implementation and the build you play includes it.
What a beginner should do instead of choosing a class
Use your opening hours to learn one weapon family and establish a repeatable combat rhythm. You can broaden the build later; trying to optimize every attribute and weapon immediately makes it harder to understand why a fight is going wrong.
- Choose an achievable weapon direction. Look at the attribute requirements for a weapon you enjoy and confirm that your current character can equip it. Do not commit to a weapon solely because its damage number is higher.
- Learn the complete moveset in a low-risk area. Practice the normal attack, dodge follow-up, defensive option, and equipped skill. Notice which actions consume stamina and how long you are committed to an animation.
- Watch the enemy before attacking. The beginner-friendly rhythm is to observe an enemy, defend or avoid its action, take a short opening, and then reset your position. This is safer than spending every available stamina point on one extra hit.
- Preserve stamina for the next enemy action. A small amount of damage is usually worth less than having enough stamina to dodge, defend, or reposition when the opponent responds.
- Refine one variable at a time. If a weapon feels too slow, test a different weapon or equipment piece before changing several attributes at once. That makes the effect of each change visible.
There is no need to recreate the character simply because your first weapon choice feels imperfect. Early experimentation is part of the attribute-and-equipment model; wait for a version-confirmed respec option before assuming you must pay to undo decisions.
How progression works in Early Access
Current progression is a collection of connected systems rather than a single class level. Attributes determine which weapons and equipment you can use, while the equipment itself changes your practical defenses and combat options. Skills and runes add further specialization to a weapon or loadout.

The Steam description also presents a large loot pool, weapon enchantment, resource gathering, rare armor crafting, meals, Sacrament property, and multiple Realm Tiers. Together, these systems let you improve without being locked to a single predefined class path.
Realm Tiers and choosing a difficulty
Realm Tiers provide multiple difficulty settings. Pick the tier that matches what you want from a particular run rather than treating the highest available tier as automatically correct.
- Prioritize story access: use the tier where ordinary encounters are manageable and you can learn enemy patterns without repeatedly exhausting your supplies.
- Prioritize a fuller combat challenge: move to a more demanding tier once your weapon rhythm, stamina management, and equipment choices are reliable.
- Reassess after a build change: a new weapon, attribute investment, or skill combination can make a previously comfortable tier feel very different.
Realm Tier selection is a difficulty decision, not a replacement for class selection. It does not turn a character into a different archetype; your attributes, equipment, and weapon choices still do that.
Respecs: what is and is not confirmed
A precise current answer about respecs is not verified. The available authoritative reference does not establish the access point, prerequisites, currency, or fee, and it warns that instructions from another game version may be wrong. Do not rely on a guide that confidently names a shrine, item, or price unless it matches the exact build you are playing and a current official source.

A safe way to check before spending resources
- Record your game version and whether you are on the live Early Access branch or an experimental branch.
- Check the current in-game menus and Moon Studios’ latest official notes for a respec feature explicitly documented for that version.
- Confirm the required item, currency, location, and any limits before accepting a reset.
- If the game does not expose a documented option, assume the cost and availability are unknown rather than guessing.
Until those details are confirmed, plan attributes conservatively: meet the requirements of your chosen weapon direction, keep enough flexibility for equipment you genuinely intend to use, and test your combat rhythm before making a large investment.
How co-op works
Up to four players share the full game
The Steam listing supports seamless online co-op for up to four players. It describes the campaign, quests, bosses, and every inch of Isola Sacra as shareable. Co-op is integrated into the full game rather than presented as a separate limited mode.
Moon Studios has described the model as a persistent shared Realm: “Not just ‘joining someone’s session temporarily’, but truly living together in the same world.” The studio also calls players “co-architects of a shared world,” with face-to-face trading and shared chests. In practical terms, the Realm is intended to remain a common place where the group can store and exchange items instead of treating each visit as a disposable match.

How to invite friends
Official co-op beta instructions for Steam tell players to add friends on Steam and invite them to their Realm. Those instructions applied to a beta branch that used separate saves from the live branch, so do not assume every beta menu or save behavior is identical to the current Early Access build.

- Add the people you want to play with through Steam’s friends system.
- Open the current live-build multiplayer or Realm interface.
- Invite the Steam friends you want in the Realm and wait for them to join.
- Before beginning important progress, verify that everyone is connected to the intended Realm and branch.
If a menu label differs from the beta instructions, follow the current in-game prompt and the latest official update notes rather than forcing an old procedure.

There is no documented requirement in the current Steam description to create a separate “co-op character.” Because co-op is integrated into the campaign and the full world, start by using the character you already play and check the current Realm interface. A version-specific onboarding rule could still change how saves are selected, especially on an experimental branch, so confirm which character and Realm are active before accepting invitations or major rewards.
The important distinction is between a character save and a shared Realm. Your build remains defined by its own attributes, weapons, equipment, and skills, while the Realm is the persistent shared space where the group can explore, trade, and store items.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Trying to play a class that does not exist yet
Symptom: You search for a class-selection screen or allocate points as though a preset tree will protect you. Fix: choose a weapon direction, meet its requirements, and build around the moveset currently available.

Spending every stamina point on offense
Symptom: the enemy survives your combo and immediately catches you without enough stamina to respond. Fix: stop after a short opening and retain stamina for the opponent’s next action.
Following a respec guide from another version
Symptom: the named location or currency is missing from your game. Fix: stop before spending resources and verify the instructions against your exact branch and current official documentation.
Confusing a beta save with a live save
Symptom: an invitation or character appears to have different progress than expected. Fix: check whether you are on the live Early Access branch; the documented co-op beta used separate saves.

Symptom: progress stalls because routine fights consume all your healing and materials. Fix: select the tier that supports your immediate goal, then raise the challenge after your build and defensive timing improve.
What to expect from the 1.0 transition
The announced 1.0 direction goes beyond adding a class label. Moon Studios has described a reimagined class and progression system, more than 60 hours of new content, at least 15 hand-crafted regions, persistent multiplayer realms, and planned crossplay and cross-save at launch. These are launch plans, not guarantees for the current Early Access build.
Because the launch month moved to March 2027 in the later official news index, date-stamp any 1.0 claim and check the studio’s newest announcement before relying on it. The most useful advice for a beginner today remains version-specific: build around the systems actually present in your Early Access client, and treat the previewed 24-class framework as future-facing.
