No—PS4 does not output a 144 Hz signal. You can connect a PS4 to a compatible 144 Hz monitor over HDMI, but the monitor’s refresh-rate rating will not make the console send 144 Hz video or run games at 144 frames per second.
Can you use a 144 Hz monitor with a PS4?
Yes. Connect the console’s HDMI OUT port to the monitor’s HDMI input, as Sony’s PS4 setup instructions direct. The monitor must accept the HDMI signal the console sends. If it does, it can display the PS4’s picture, even though it is capable of refreshing more frequently with other devices.
Why a 144 Hz monitor does not give PS4 144 Hz output
Refresh rate and frame rate describe different things. Refresh rate is how often a display can refresh its image; frame rate is how many images the console and game generate each second. A 144 Hz monitor’s capability does not change the video signal coming from the PS4.
Sony’s PS4 FAQ lists HDMI video standards of 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, and says frame rates up to 60 frames per second are possible. Based on those published specifications, a 144 Hz monitor should not be treated as a way to unlock 144 Hz output or 144 fps on PS4. Sony’s FAQ dates to 2013 and does not provide an exhaustive timing table for every console, software, and display combination.

Does PS4 Pro’s 1440p support mean 144 Hz?
No. Sony’s Portugal PS4 Pro technical specifications describe game resolution ranging from 1080p to 1440p on an HD TV. Resolution is the number of pixels in the image; refresh rate is how often the display refreshes it. The 1440p figure is not a 144 Hz mode.
What to consider before using a 144 Hz monitor
For PS4, judge the monitor as a display rather than as a performance upgrade. Check that it accepts the console’s HDMI signal and supports a resolution the PS4 can output. Screen size, image quality, and whether you will use the monitor with other devices that can take advantage of its higher refresh rate may also matter. Sony’s published material does not establish a PS4 performance benefit from buying a 144 Hz display alone.

Use the HDMI cable supplied with the console if available and working; the setup is simply an HDMI connection. The cited setup information does not establish a need for a premium replacement cable for ordinary display use.

No. Sony says frame rates up to 60 fps are possible; that is not a promise that every PS4 game reaches 60 fps. A 144 Hz monitor cannot raise a game’s frame rate beyond what the console and game produce.
