The OnePlus 16 is a China-market phone, not a locally launched US or European model. OnePlus China documents a flagship with a 9,000mAh typical-equivalent battery, 100W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and refresh rates up to 165Hz system-wide or 185Hz in supported games. Recent reporting indicates OnePlus is no longer introducing new products through normal US and European launch channels, so buyers in those regions must treat the OnePlus 16 as an import—and verify network, software, tax and warranty details before paying.
Why the OnePlus 16 is not sold normally in the US or Europe
OnePlus China officially lists the OnePlus 16, but the company’s current launch strategy does not provide a corresponding new-product release for the US or European markets. That makes a Chinese-market handset the practical route for interested buyers. Oppo Global PR head Shuang Chen described the broader withdrawal decision by saying, “It wasn’t a decision made in a rush.”

A China listing is not proof that a global OxygenOS version, European model number or US carrier certification exists. A seller may offer a Chinese device with its original ColorOS software, a modified retailer ROM or a later regional firmware conversion. Those versions can differ in languages, Google services, supported frequencies, update delivery and bootloader policy.
What the Chinese OnePlus 16 offers
The hardware is unusually aggressive for an import. OnePlus China identifies two 4,500mAh cells, marketed together as a 9,000mAh typical-equivalent battery; the rated capacity is 8,780mAh. The phone supports up to 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Its 6.78-inch, 2772×1272, 10-bit display uses adaptive refresh from 1Hz to 165Hz during normal system use and can reach 185Hz in supported games.
| Specification | OnePlus China listing |
|---|---|
| Display | 6.78 inches; 2772×1272; 10-bit; 1–165Hz smart switching outside games; up to 185Hz in supported games |
| Battery | Two 4,500mAh cells; 9,000mAh typical-equivalent capacity; 8,780mAh rated capacity |
| Charging | Up to 100W wired, including 100W UFCS support; 50W wireless charging |
| Rear cameras | 200MP wide camera with OIS, 50MP ultrawide, 50MP telephoto with OIS |
| Front camera | 50MP |
| Platform | Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 |
| Memory and storage | Configurations from 12GB/256GB to 16GB/1TB |
| Dimensions and weight | 161.42 × 76.67mm; 8.45–8.55mm thick; approximately 217–220g, depending on finish |
The 185Hz figure is a maximum gaming mode, not a constant refresh rate for every app. Game support, thermal conditions and power settings determine whether a title actually uses it. Likewise, the large battery’s capacity does not guarantee a particular number of hours: brightness, cellular signal, gaming load and background software remain decisive.
How to check whether an imported phone will work on your carrier
Carrier compatibility is the highest-risk part of this purchase. A phone can connect to some networks yet lack a band needed for rural coverage, fail carrier certification or omit features such as VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, visual voicemail or emergency calling.
- Get the exact model number. Ask the seller for the retail box or settings-page model identifier and the unedited specification sheet. Do not assume every “OnePlus 16” listing uses the same radio hardware or that a future global variant will match the China model.
- Compare every LTE and 5G band. Use the model number, not a generic product name, when checking your US or EU carrier’s published bands. A missing low-band frequency can reduce indoor or rural coverage even when faster bands are present.
- Confirm carrier features in writing. Ask whether that exact model is approved for VoLTE, 5G, Wi-Fi Calling, visual voicemail and emergency calling. A data connection alone is not sufficient if voice registration falls back to unsupported legacy technology.
- Check SIM and eSIM requirements. Confirm whether your carrier requires a physical SIM, supports eSIM on the imported model and permits activation of an uncertified handset.
- Test during the return period. Before removing protective films or transferring all data, place calls, send texts, test 5G, enable Wi-Fi Calling and verify voicemail in the locations where you depend on the phone.
Software, Google Play and updates
Before ordering, have the seller state whether the phone ships with China ColorOS, an official regional build or a retailer-modified ROM. Ask which languages are available, whether Google Play services and the Play Store are preinstalled and whether the bootloader can be unlocked without disabling banking or streaming applications.

Confirm that over-the-air updates arrive for the purchased region, that the seller has not altered the system partition and that a factory reset will not remove Google services. A modified ROM may provide a familiar language and Play Store but can delay updates, break notifications or prevent secure-device checks. An official Chinese build may be more reliable yet offer fewer languages or region-specific services.
Warranty, repairs and the real delivered cost
Do not assume a local OnePlus warranty applies to an imported unit. Depending on the seller and region, service may require shipping the phone back to the country of origin or using the retailer’s own repair channel. Before purchase, obtain written answers about parts availability, repair location, turnaround time, accidental-damage exclusions and who pays outbound and return shipping.
| Cost or obligation | What to include |
|---|---|
| Purchase price | The seller’s China-market handset price and any payment or currency-conversion fee |
| Delivery | International shipping, insurance and signature requirements |
| Import charges | US sales tax or EU VAT, customs duty and brokerage fees where applicable |
| Accessories | A region-compatible plug or charger, case and screen protector matched to the exact camera layout |
| Returns | Potential international return shipping, restocking deductions and refund timing |
| After-sales service | Possible shipping to the origin country, diagnostic fees and parts delays |
Calculate that delivered total before comparing the phone with a locally supported flagship. A lower sticker price can disappear once VAT or sales tax, customs, shipping and a difficult return are included.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you import it?
The import makes sense when
- You have verified every relevant LTE and 5G band and your carrier confirms voice and emergency-call support.
- You are comfortable with the phone’s available languages, ColorOS behavior and Google Play setup.
- The battery capacity, 100W charging, 50W wireless charging or high-refresh gaming display are priorities worth accepting regional support risk for.
- The seller provides a credible warranty with a practical repair route and a clearly stated return policy.
Waiting or buying locally is safer when
- You need guaranteed carrier certification, Wi-Fi Calling, visual voicemail or dependable 5G without manual verification.
- You rely on a local service center, fast replacement or straightforward consumer-protection returns.
- You are comparing only headline prices and have not yet added tax, customs, shipping and possible repair costs.
Final buying checklist
- Record the exact model number and seller ROM description.
- Match all carrier LTE and 5G bands, then confirm VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, voicemail and emergency calling.
- Verify Google Play, language support, ColorOS or OxygenOS, bootloader rules and regional OTA updates.
- Compute the delivered price with shipping, VAT or sales tax, customs, payment fees and return shipping.
- Read the warranty for repair location, parts, turnaround and shipping responsibility.
- Check the charger plug and protocol, then buy accessories only after confirming the model and camera layout.
The OnePlus 16’s specifications explain the interest: a 9,000mAh typical-equivalent battery, rapid wired and wireless charging, and an unusually high gaming refresh ceiling. For US and EU buyers, however, those advantages come bundled with import-only uncertainty. Proceed only after the network, software, warranty and all-in cost are documented for the exact unit you will receive.
