Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl says Grand Theft Auto VI and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 are “the two biggest games of the year,” placing both ahead of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake. That is Activision’s market assessment, not an independently verified industry ranking.
The release calendar gives the claim some context: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for October 23, 2026, Zelda for November 5, and GTA VI for November 19. Early purchase-intent data favors Modern Warfare 4 in percentage terms, but the figures need to be read alongside the much smaller Switch 2 audience.

What Tyler Bahl actually said
In a Game Business interview discussed by Video Games Chronicle and Nintendo Life, Bahl said: “Well, no offense to Zelda, but [GTA and COD] are the two biggest games of the year.” The wording matters. Bahl is Activision’s chief marketing officer, so the statement reflects an executive promoting one of the company’s products rather than a neutral ranking based on sales, reviews or player counts.
Bahl’s broader argument was that major releases can bring people back to their Xbox or PlayStation dashboards and lift attention across the games market. He also attributed Call of Duty’s staying power to its community and social experience, including the ability for friends to play together across platforms.

Nintendo Life additionally reported that Nintendo supported Modern Warfare 4 with a co-marketing campaign intended to broaden the Switch 2 audience. That arrangement helps explain why Activision is presenting the game as a release with unusually wide reach rather than only another entry for existing Call of Duty players.

These are scheduled dates, not guarantees that no delay will occur. The close spacing means the three releases could compete for attention during the same holiday buying period.

Which game has stronger pre-release demand?
Survey figures cited by VGC from Circana senior director and video-game industry adviser Mat Piscatella put Modern Warfare 4 ahead on stated purchase intent. Piscatella shared the figures in August 2026 among US console and PC players.

The five-point difference does not predict final sales. These are survey responses, not completed purchases, launch sell-through, engagement or retention measurements.

Piscatella also cautioned that the denominator includes the entire US console and PC player base. The Switch 2 installed base was reported as fewer than 7 million, while the combined US base of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series systems was just under 50 million, alongside PC players. A 10.4% intention rate for a Switch 2 title may therefore represent stronger interest among the people who can actually buy it than the headline percentages suggest.
Why Activision groups GTA and Call of Duty together
Reach across platforms
Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for four broad platform categories, including Switch 2. That gives Activision more potential storefronts and communities at launch than a game limited to one console family. The cited GTA VI date establishes a major console launch, but the available statement does not provide a complete platform list for a like-for-like reach calculation.

Social play and dashboard activity
Bahl’s case is partly about behavior after launch: a major release can prompt people to switch on a console, browse a dashboard and invite friends to play. His specific rationale for Call of Duty is its durable community and cross-platform social play. Those qualities could help Modern Warfare 4 maintain attention even when another blockbuster arrives, although no post-launch player or retention figures exist yet.

Different kinds of blockbuster attention
The games do not need to succeed in exactly the same way to become major releases. Call of Duty’s argument centers on a recurring, community-driven multiplayer audience, while GTA VI is being treated as a large-scale event release. The available evidence does not establish comparative campaign length, multiplayer populations or final sales for either upcoming game.

It may compete for players’ time and budgets because the launches are less than a month apart, but there is no evidence yet that GTA VI will permanently reduce Call of Duty engagement. Several outcomes are possible:
- Some players may buy both and divide their time between a new GTA experience and Call of Duty’s social modes.
- Some may delay one purchase because the release dates are close or because they have limited play time.
- Call of Duty’s cross-platform friend groups may keep people returning even after GTA VI launches.
- The eventual effect will depend on launch quality, content updates, pricing and player reception—information that is not available before release.
Consequently, Bahl’s claim should be read as a statement about expected cultural and commercial impact, not proof that Activision’s game will outsell GTA VI or the Zelda remake.
