There is no single best NBN plan for every home. The right choice depends on what technology and speed tiers are available at your address, how many people use the connection at once, and what they do online—especially in the evening. Compare providers’ expected busy-period speeds, Key Facts Sheets, total costs and service terms, not just the advertised speed tier.
What makes an NBN plan right for your home?
Start with your address: the available NBN technology and retail plans vary by location, and not every tier is offered everywhere. Check availability for the exact service address, then ask providers which plans they currently offer there. NBN directs customers to their retail provider for plan details, pricing, ordering and ongoing support. NBN Co’s guide to choosing a provider explains the address and provider considerations.
Next, judge the connection by the household’s busy-hour workload. Count the people and devices likely to be online at the same time, and consider what they will be doing during the evening: for example, streaming, video calls, gaming, cloud backups or large downloads. NBN’s guidance likewise frames speed selection around users, devices and activities, rather than naming one tier as suitable for everyone. Check NBN availability and choosing a plan.
Compare the service you are likely to get, not just the tier name
A plan’s advertised tier is not a promise that your home will receive that speed at every time of day. Ask for the provider’s expected busy-period download speed and check its Key Facts Sheet. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) says providers must give customers a Key Facts Sheet with information including expected busy-period speeds, supported uses, factors that can affect speed, and services that may not work during a power failure. Read ACMA’s explanation of telecommunications Key Facts Sheets.

- OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
Ask about upload speed if your household makes frequent video calls, backs up files to the cloud or sends large files. Also ask what speeds to expect at peak and off-peak times and whether there are known limitations at your address. NBN identifies network technology and configuration, provider network design and household equipment among the factors that can affect the experience. NBN Co’s provider guidance discusses the questions to ask.
Use national performance figures as context, not a personal guarantee
Independent measurements can help set expectations, but averages do not predict the speed at a particular address. In a release published 17 June 2026, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) reported that Australian fixed-line NBN households averaged 99.4% of their plan’s download speed during peak evening periods. That aggregate finding is not an individual service guarantee. The ACCC said the June 2026 release was the final publication of its long-running Measuring Broadband Australia program. - DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Do not apply fixed-line figures to fixed-wireless service. On its performance page, the ACCC reports that fixed-wireless users averaged 83.8% of plan download speeds during busy hours in its latest reporting period. The technologies and measurement periods differ, so the figures are not interchangeable. See the ACCC’s NBN speed-test performance information.

- Check the address. Confirm NBN availability and access technology for the exact home address, then ask providers which retail tiers they currently offer there.
- Map the evening workload. Note the number of people, devices and activities likely to overlap. Include any upload-heavy tasks as well as streaming, downloads and calls.
- Read each Key Facts Sheet. Compare expected busy-period download speeds and supported uses. Ask about upload performance, peak and off-peak speeds, and known service limitations.
- Compare the full cost and terms. Check the current total price, whether any introductory price changes later, contract and cancellation conditions, equipment charges, and setup or activation costs directly with each provider.
- Ask what happens if speeds fall short. Before signing up, ask the provider what options or remedies apply if the service cannot deliver the speed specified for the plan.
When the plan seems slow, separate service speed from Wi-Fi
If an existing connection is slow, test it at both peak and off-peak times and discuss the results with the provider. NBN recommends this approach. A poor experience in one room may also point to a home Wi-Fi coverage issue rather than an inadequate NBN tier; equipment quality can affect the connection experience, but that alone does not show that a new router is needed. - Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Check separately whether alarms or medical services rely on the connection, and ask how they are affected if power fails. ACMA notes that Key Facts Sheets include information about services that will not work during a power failure. ACMA’s Key Facts Sheet guidance.

A specific plan recommendation requires the home’s address, available technology, budget, concurrent household workload and current retail offers. Those details determine which options are actually available and what they cost. Use the provider’s address-specific offer and Key Facts Sheet to make the final comparison, rather than choosing from a tier label or a national average alone.
