Yes. NordVPN now documents a direct manual-setup flow that generates a server-specific WireGuard .conf file. You can import that file into the official WireGuard client or a compatible router instead of creating configuration scripts yourself. In one TechRadar router test, NordLynx reached more than 950 Mbps compared with 173 Mbps for OpenVPN, but that roughly 5.5-times result reflects one hardware and network setup—not a guarantee for every router.
What NordVPN changed
NordVPN’s current manual-setup process lets subscribers download a ready-made WireGuard configuration. Sign in to Nord Account, open NordVPN, enter Advanced Settings, select Set up NordVPN manually, choose a recommended or searched server, select WireGuard, and click Download config. The download is a server-specific .conf file.
NordVPN’s server list identifies upgraded servers with a Verified badge. When one is available in a suitable location, it is the safer starting point for a manual configuration. Because each file belongs to the selected server, changing servers requires downloading another file.

NordVPN’s apps use NordLynx, the company’s WireGuard-based protocol with a custom double-NAT design. A manual router configuration uses standard WireGuard credentials and the downloaded server file instead. Both are built around WireGuard’s modern cryptography, but they are separate connection paths.

Manual setup requires an active NordVPN subscription, NordVPN service credentials, and either the official WireGuard application or a router that supports WireGuard in client mode. A normal router that only supports OpenVPN cannot use the file.
How to put NordVPN WireGuard on a router
- Confirm compatibility. Check the router’s firmware documentation for a WireGuard client, not merely WireGuard server support, and confirm that it can import a
.conffile. - Download a configuration. In Nord Account, open NordVPN’s manual setup area, choose a recommended or searched server, select WireGuard, and download the configuration. Prefer a server carrying the Verified badge when practical.
- Open the router interface. Sign in to the router’s administration page and locate its VPN, WireGuard, or VPN-client section. The exact label depends on the firmware.
- Import the file. Upload the downloaded
.conffile. If the router does not offer an import button, its firmware may require copying the tunnel’s private key, address, peer public key, endpoint, and allowed-IPs values manually. - Provide credentials if requested. Some router interfaces ask for NordVPN service credentials separately. Use the service credentials supplied for manual connections rather than assuming your ordinary account password will work.
- Activate and verify. Enable the tunnel, check that the router reports an active handshake, then verify the public IP and DNS behavior from a connected device. Confirm that the router’s kill switch or “block traffic outside VPN” setting is enabled if the firmware provides one.
- Keep a spare configuration. Download a second server file before troubleshooting. A server can be congested or temporarily unavailable, and each file is tied to its original server.
Can WireGuard make a VPN router faster than OpenVPN?
Often, but the size of the improvement depends on the router and connection. TechRadar reported on 14 October 2026 that its router testing measured more than 950 Mbps on NordLynx versus 173 Mbps on OpenVPN. That is approximately 5.5 times faster in that test. TechRadar also reported in 2022 that its downloads regularly put WireGuard at roughly two to five times OpenVPN performance.

Those figures describe particular test conditions. A VPN router cannot exceed the speed supplied by the underlying broadband connection. Encryption performance, processor speed, firmware quality, server distance, Wi-Fi conditions, and congestion can all reduce the result. On low-powered hardware, the router may remain the bottleneck even after switching protocols.

Which routers support this setup?
The deciding feature is WireGuard client support with a usable import path. Check the firmware’s supported-protocol list, maximum VPN throughput, and whether it can apply the tunnel to all devices or selected devices. NordVPN’s router guidance names the FlashRouters Privacy Hero II as an example of a high-quality VPN router, but availability, firmware revisions, price, and throughput can change, so verify those details before purchasing.

- Look for WireGuard client mode, not only server mode.
- Check the manufacturer’s VPN-throughput figures and test methodology.
- Confirm support for kill-switch rules and DNS-leak prevention.
- Check whether the router accepts a complete
.confupload or requires manual field entry. - Ensure the firmware can route the devices you actually want protected.
Troubleshooting common failures
The router rejects the file
Make sure the file was downloaded for WireGuard rather than OpenVPN and that the router supports client imports. Some firmware accepts only selected fields; in that case, enter the values from the file exactly as shown.
The tunnel connects but websites show the old IP
Check that the router policy routes the test device through the VPN, renew the device’s network connection, and test from a second device. Then check DNS settings and enable the firmware’s DNS-leak protection if available.

Speeds are disappointing
Test over Ethernet first, select a nearer Verified server, compare with VPN disabled, and check router CPU utilization. If the router’s processor is saturated, changing servers will not remove the hardware limit.
The connection drops
Try the spare server configuration, verify the endpoint and credentials, update router firmware, and confirm that the router clock is correct. Keep a non-VPN recovery path so you can reach the administration interface if the tunnel fails.
