Short answer: Proton VPN has the most inspectable audit trail in this comparison. NordVPN and ExpressVPN publish recent independent assurance evidence, while Private Internet Access is notable for court-tested no-logs claims reported by TechRadar. A fifth provider should not be ranked responsibly without checking the same evidence. “No logs” is not a promise of anonymity: a VPN hides traffic from your local network and internet provider, but it shifts trust to the VPN operator.
What “no logs” means in practice
A no-logs policy describes what a VPN provider says it records, retains and can associate with an account or connection. It does not mean the service is invisible, that websites cannot identify you, or that every component of the company’s infrastructure has been independently examined.
When you connect, your internet provider and the Wi-Fi operator generally see that your device is communicating with a VPN server rather than the final websites and services. The VPN operator, however, becomes the party capable of observing the connection as it passes through its systems. You therefore exchange one trust relationship for another.

Useful evidence has three parts:
- Policy: what the provider says it does not collect.
- Technical controls: how servers, storage, software and deployment processes are configured to enforce that policy.
- External verification: an independent assessment, court record or other disclosure that tests claims in a defined context.
A provider-authored transparency report is valuable but answers a different question from an audit. It describes requests the company received and what it says it could disclose at a particular time; an audit examines specified systems or controls.

| Provider | Evidence available in 2026 | Public access and limits | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Provider announcement of a fifth consecutive annual Securitum no-logs review; Securitum’s 2025 report publicly explains methods and exclusions. | The 2026 announcement links a technical conclusion. The detailed 2025 report is public and explicitly describes point-in-time scope. | Readers who want the most inspectable audit-paper trail in this set. |
| NordVPN | Sixth independent no-logs audit announced in February 2026; Deloitte examined interviews, infrastructure, configurations and deployment processes during November 10–December 12, 2025. | The provider says the full report is available to signed-in Nord Account users, not the general public. | Readers comfortable with a recent independent check whose full report has restricted access. |
| ExpressVPN | KPMG assurance assessment of TrustedServer and privacy-policy claims as of February 28, 2025; January–June 2026 transparency report. | The provider’s summary says KPMG gave reasonable assurance with no identified issues regarding technical safeguards against activity logging. Full-report access requires acknowledging KPMG terms. | Readers who value assurance evidence plus detailed request reporting. |
| Private Internet Access | TechRadar’s 2026 review reports that the no-logs policy was proven in court twice. | This is secondary reporting, not a reviewed court docket or a current public technical audit in the evidence available here. | Readers interested in legal-history evidence, while accepting that it differs from a current infrastructure audit. |
| A fifth candidate | Use the verification checklist below rather than treating an unexamined provider as a winner. | Do not infer that a marketing “no logs” label is equivalent to an independent audit. | Readers comparing another service in their own country and on their own devices. |
1. Proton VPN: the clearest public audit trail
Proton says its 2026 Securitum review was the provider’s fifth consecutive annual no-logs audit. That repeated schedule is useful context, but the number of audits alone does not establish that every system is permanently log-free.
The most useful detail comes from Securitum’s publicly available 2025 report. It says auditors examined the production VPN server environment through documentation review, interviews, live inspection of randomly selected servers, review of configuration and deployment processes, and checks for data leakage. The report’s conclusion, as quoted by Proton, states that the technical evidence reviewed did not indicate logging of browsing activity, DNS queries, destination services, network-traffic contents or user-identifiable connection metadata in the examined infrastructure. It also says no persistent records were identified that would associate a specific user with activity performed through a reviewed VPN server.
Those words are deliberately bounded. The report describes a point-in-time validation of the production VPN server environment. It excluded Proton’s CI/CD pipeline, formal source-code review, ancillary systems such as accounting or account management, and static or dynamic analysis of client or server binaries. An audit cannot guarantee conduct after the assessment date or validate systems that were outside scope.
Transparency evidence
Proton’s July 2026 transparency report says the company had received 458 legally binding Swiss-authority orders since launch in 2017. Proton says it could not provide the requested identifying information because it did not retain the relevant logs. This is a company-reported legal-request disclosure, not a substitute for Securitum’s technical examination.
Why choose Proton
- The current announcement describes five consecutive annual reviews.
- A previous Securitum report is publicly readable and explains procedures and exclusions.
- The transparency report supplies a concrete, dated example of how Proton says it handled legal demands.
Choose it when inspectability of the evidence matters more than a simple audit-count leaderboard.
2. NordVPN: recent independent assessment with restricted access
NordVPN announced its sixth independent no-logs audit in February 2026. According to the provider, Deloitte conducted the work from November 10 through December 12, 2025, using ISAE 3000 (Revised). The stated procedures included employee interviews, examination of server infrastructure and configurations, and review of deployment processes.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The important qualification is report access: NordVPN says the full report is available to Nord Account users rather than to the general public. That gives customers a way to inspect more detail, but a non-customer cannot independently read the complete findings under the stated access arrangement.
NordVPN’s Trust Center provides historical context for its independent-verification program. Historical continuity can help a reader understand how the provider approaches assurance, but it does not remove the need to check the date and scope of the latest engagement.
How to interpret this evidence
- Freshness: the stated examination period ended in December 2025, making it recent for a 2026 comparison.
- Independence: Deloitte is identified as the assessor.
- Transparency limit: full-report access is restricted to account holders.
This is a reasonable choice for readers who value a recent third-party check and already have, or are willing to create, an account to inspect the report.
3. ExpressVPN: assurance assessment plus request reporting
ExpressVPN says KPMG assessed its TrustedServer technology and privacy-policy claims as of February 28, 2025. The provider describes the engagement as an ISAE (UK) 3000 Type 1 assessment and says KPMG provided reasonable assurance, with no identified issues concerning technical safeguards against activity logging. The full report is available after a reader acknowledges KPMG’s terms, according to the provider’s announcement.
ExpressVPN’s January–June 2026 transparency report adds a separate operational disclosure. It says the company received 137 government, law-enforcement and civil requests, including three warrants, and that zero requests resulted in disclosure of VPN activity or connection logs. These figures are company-reported and cover different request categories; they are not an independent audit result.

What this combination tells you
The KPMG assessment addresses defined safeguards and claims at a stated date. The transparency report shows how ExpressVPN says it handled requests during the first half of 2026. Read them together, but do not turn either document into a promise that no future request could ever produce data.
4. Private Internet Access: court-tested evidence, not a current audit
TechRadar’s 2026 review says Private Internet Access’s no-logs policy has been proven in court twice. That is a different type of evidence from a technical audit: a court proceeding can test whether records were available or produced in particular cases, while an audit examines defined systems and controls.
The statement is secondary reporting. The underlying court dockets were not reviewed for this comparison, and the available evidence does not establish a current public infrastructure-audit report. Court history should therefore be treated as supporting context rather than proof that every present configuration remains unchanged.

TechRadar also noted performance and connection issues in its assessment. Those observations are review-specific, not universal measurements, so test the service on your own network, locations and devices before committing to a long plan.
How to vet a fifth no-log VPN
If you are comparing another provider, use the same questions instead of accepting a badge or a “zero logs” headline.
- Identify the assessor and engagement date. A named independent firm and a specific period are stronger than an undated claim.
- Read the scope. Confirm whether auditors inspected production servers, deployment systems, configuration management, applications, account systems and support tools.
- Check exclusions. Look for omitted CI/CD pipelines, source code, client binaries, analytics, billing, account management or ancillary infrastructure.
- Find the conclusion’s exact wording. “No issues identified” and “no evidence observed” are bounded findings, not guarantees about every future system.
- Check report access. Note whether the complete report is public, available only to customers, or represented only by a provider-written summary.
- Look for dated transparency reports. Request counts and disclosure outcomes should include the reporting period and categories.
- Separate technical privacy from account data. A provider may avoid VPN-activity logs while still retaining information needed for billing, authentication or support.
- Verify your actual requirements. Check supported operating systems, router options, simultaneous-device rules, server locations, payment methods and current local terms directly before purchase.
What a no-logs audit actually checks
There is no universal audit template. A credible report should tell you what the assessor could observe and what it could not.

Production infrastructure
Auditors may inspect live or randomly selected servers, storage behavior, configuration files and monitoring controls. Securitum’s 2025 Proton report specifically describes live inspection of randomly selected production servers and checks for data leakage.

Interviews and documentation review can test whether deployment, access control and operational procedures match the published policy. They still depend on the evidence made available during the engagement.
Software and pipelines
Some engagements exclude source-code review, client binaries or CI/CD systems. If those exclusions appear in the report, do not claim that the audit validated the excluded components.
Point-in-time limits
An assessment records conditions during a defined window. New software, servers, vendors, policies, legal demands or ownership changes can alter the situation later. Repeated audits improve ongoing evidence but never create a perpetual guarantee.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a VPN hand over your browsing history?
A provider can disclose only records it holds or can lawfully obtain. If it genuinely does not retain browsing activity or connection metadata, it may have nothing of that kind to provide. That conclusion depends on the provider’s actual systems, the scope and date of independent verification, and the way the company responds to legal demands.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA request report is therefore informative but limited. Proton says it could not provide identifying information sought in 458 Swiss-authority orders because it did not retain the needed logs. ExpressVPN says none of 137 government, law-enforcement and civil requests in January–June 2026, including three warrants, resulted in disclosure of VPN activity or connection logs. Both statements describe provider-reported handling during specified periods; neither independently proves future behavior.

Privacy features beyond the label
Once the logging evidence is understood, compare practical features that affect exposure and reliability:
- Kill switch behavior: determine whether traffic stops when the tunnel drops and whether the setting works during sleep, roaming and network changes.
- DNS and IPv6 handling: check for documented leak protection and test on your own networks.
- Platform coverage: confirm support for your operating systems, browsers, mobile devices and any smart devices you need to protect.
- Router deployment: a router-based setup can cover devices that cannot run a VPN application, but it still relies on the provider and does not make users anonymous.
- Account and payment data: review what information is required to subscribe and how long it is retained.
- Performance: independent tests such as AV-TEST’s 2025 comparison provide useful context, but measured speeds and connection behavior depend on the test sample, locations, protocols and date.
Using a VPN across a home network
A VPN-enabled router can protect devices that lack native VPN applications, including many televisions, consoles and smart-home products. ExpressVPN Aircove is one example of this product category: Cure53’s independent February 2025 report describes it as a Wi-Fi 6 router range with built-in VPN and documents a November 2024 assessment of Aircove V5 firmware, router UI and related components.
A router extends the tunnel; it does not remove provider trust, prevent websites from identifying logged-in users, or guarantee anonymity. Before choosing this setup, check whether the router supports the provider’s service, how local-network devices are managed, how updates are delivered and what happens if the VPN tunnel fails.
How to choose among the four named providers
Choose Proton VPN when public inspectability is your priority
Its publicly described fifth consecutive Securitum review and the detailed public 2025 report make it the easiest evidence trail here for a reader who wants to examine methods and exclusions directly.
Choose NordVPN when you value a recent assessment and can access the account portal
The Deloitte engagement covers a late-2025 period and multiple operational areas, but the complete report is not openly available to everyone.
Choose ExpressVPN when request reporting matters alongside assurance
The KPMG assessment and the January–June 2026 transparency report address different questions and together provide both control-assurance and legal-request context.
Choose Private Internet Access when court history is meaningful to you
Its reported two court-tested instances are distinct from a current technical audit. Treat the evidence as legally contextual and verify present-day configurations and performance yourself.
Quick Recap
Checks to complete before subscribing
- Read the latest privacy policy and audit summary, not only the home-page claim.
- Record the audit date, assessor, scope, exclusions and report-access conditions.
- Check current pricing, renewal terms, taxes and payment options for your country; these change and are not universal figures.
- Confirm that the apps, router setup and device count you need are supported under the plan offered in your region.
- Test connection stability, DNS behavior and kill-switch operation during the provider’s refund or trial period, if one is offered.
- Decide whether your threat model requires protection from a local network, an internet provider, targeted tracking, or a more specific adversary. A commercial VPN is not a complete anonymity system.
