Neither AMD nor SK hynix can be called the better buy from the available results alone: a fair stock-picking decision also needs same-date valuations and comparable forward earnings expectations, which are not established here. The companies offer different semiconductor exposures. AMD sells processors and accelerators across data center, client, gaming, and embedded markets; SK hynix is a memory supplier whose recent results benefited from high-value products and rising DRAM and NAND prices.
What you are buying with each stock
This is a comparison of two semiconductor businesses, not interchangeable ways to own the same product market. AMD’s portfolio spans CPUs, GPUs and accelerators, while SK hynix is centered on DRAM, NAND, and high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Both have reported strong AI-related demand, but their revenue drivers and exposure to industry cycles differ.

The annual figures are reported in different currencies, and the latest quarterly results use different accounting and reporting bases: AMD’s figures are U.S. dollars and SEC-filed results, while SK hynix’s Q2 release presents preliminary K-IFRS results in Korean won. The numbers should not be compared as if they were on a common basis.

AMD reported Q2 2026 revenue of $11.5 billion, up 50% from a year earlier, with a 54% GAAP gross margin, $2.0 billion of GAAP operating income, $2.3 billion of GAAP net income, and diluted EPS of $1.38. CEO Lisa Su described it as a record quarter for revenue and profitability and said Data Center revenue more than doubled year over year; that is management commentary, not evidence that the pace will continue.

Data Center led growth; other segments were mixed
The SEC-filed quarter detail shows Data Center revenue of $6.7 billion, up 107% year over year. Client and Gaming revenue combined was $3.8 billion, up 6%, but Gaming revenue fell 31% to $779 million, primarily because of lower semi-custom revenue. Embedded revenue rose 19% to $977 million. The quarter was therefore strong overall but not a broad acceleration across every business line.
For context, AMD’s FY2025 Data Center revenue was $16.6 billion, up 32%, driven primarily by demand for fifth-generation EPYC processors and Instinct MI350 series GPUs. Client and Gaming revenue was $14.6 billion, up 51%, while Embedded revenue was $3.5 billion, down 3%. The contrast between those annual results and the latest quarter illustrates why investors should track each segment rather than rely only on total revenue growth.

Cash and cash generation
AMD reported $13.1 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments as of June 27, 2026, and $5.3 billion of operating cash flow for the first half of 2026. Those figures provide balance-sheet and cash-generation context, but assessing future returns also requires considering investment needs and shareholder returns.

What the latest quarter says about SK hynix
SK hynix reported preliminary Q2 2026 revenue of 79.3187 trillion won and operating profit of 60.5426 trillion won, an operating margin of 76%. The company attributed the performance to high-value products including HBM, AI-server DRAM, and enterprise SSDs, and said DRAM and NAND prices increased significantly quarter over quarter. Its FY2025 release reported revenue of 97.1467 trillion won and operating profit of 47.2063 trillion won; HBM revenue more than doubled year over year, and the company also described strong conventional server-memory demand.

Strong results are not the same as a normalized earnings forecast
The Q2 release also reported net profit of 93.9226 trillion won and a net margin of 118%, both higher than operating profit and operating margin. Those are the company’s published preliminary figures, but the unusual relationship warrants checking the detailed financial statements and reconciliations before using the net result to infer a continuing margin trend. A single quarter should not be treated as an annual earnings run rate.
SK hynix said it had finalized long-term agreements with around 10 customers. That is evidence of customer arrangements, but the release does not establish guaranteed revenue, fixed prices, or protection against changes in memory demand and pricing.

Cash and debt
SK hynix reported cash and cash equivalents of 88 trillion won, total debt of 18.6 trillion won, and net cash of 69.4 trillion won at the end of Q2 2026. AMD’s reported cash figure includes short-term investments, and the disclosures use different currencies and accounting bases, so these balances are not directly comparable without adjustments.

Compare valuation against expected earnings
Use share prices from the same date and compare market capitalization and enterprise value with normalized forward earnings and cash flow. Neither company’s cited results establish which stock is cheaper, and strong recent growth alone does not answer whether a share price already reflects that growth.

Test how durable the growth drivers are
For AMD, examine whether Data Center growth can continue while Client, Gaming, and Embedded perform unevenly. For SK hynix, assess whether demand for HBM and other AI-server memory can support results if memory pricing changes. Treat customer plans and company expectations as uncertain, not guaranteed outcomes.
-
Compare profitability on a consistent basis
Align reporting periods, currencies, and accounting definitions before comparing margins or earnings. Distinguish GAAP results from non-GAAP presentations, and inspect SK hynix’s detailed statements before interpreting the preliminary Q2 net-profit figure.
-
Check cash flow, balance sheets, and investment needs
Compare cash, debt, operating cash flow, capital requirements, and shareholder returns using aligned periods and definitions. The balances above are useful context, not a like-for-like measure of financial strength.

Match the exposure to your risk tolerance
AMD offers several product-market exposures, though its latest reported growth was led by Data Center. SK hynix offers a more memory-centered exposure, where the reported quarter coincided with higher DRAM and NAND prices. Consider how much volatility and concentration you are willing to accept rather than assuming that AI demand removes business-cycle risk.
What the evidence can—and cannot—settle
The company results support a clear business distinction: AMD’s Q2 growth was heavily Data Center-led, while SK hynix reported strong results amid AI-related memory demand and higher memory prices. They do not establish which stock offers better prospective returns. That judgment requires current valuation, a defensible earnings outlook, and an investor-specific view of concentration and cyclicality. Earnings and share prices can change quickly, so any comparison should use current market data rather than treat these reported periods as a live buy signal.
