Nkuzi is described by its creator as an offline study aid for recalling lecture material: load slides, explain the topic aloud with them closed, then see which points you missed and compare your explanation with the slide text. It is a project rather than an independently evaluated study product, and its reported speech-recognition limits matter—especially for Nigerian-accented English and medical terminology.
What Nkuzi does
The creator, bukeeastrey, describes Nkuzi as a study workflow for students who learn by explaining material aloud. Its name means “teaching” in Igbo, according to the creator. The reported workflow starts with a lecture file in PowerPoint, PDF, or Word format. Nkuzi extracts key points into a checklist, then listens as the student explains the topic. As points are discussed, the app marks them off; the learner can ask “What did I miss?” to see checklist items that were not covered.

What the workflow can—and cannot—tell you
A checked item indicates that Nkuzi detected discussion of that topic; it does not establish that the explanation was accurate. The creator explicitly identifies checklist ticking as coverage tracking, not correctness checking. “Check me” is intended to help examine correctness against slide text, but it should be treated as a prompt to review the source, not as a definitive medical or academic verdict.
The creator says safeguards were added after early model errors: checklist wording is grounded in lines from the slides, quoted correction text is checked against slide content, a second yes-or-no check is used, garbled speech prompts a message, and manual override controls are available. In one author-run contradiction test, Gemma 4 E2B reportedly returned four correct results out of four. That small test is not a broad accuracy or safety guarantee.

How it is reported to work offline
The project article describes an all-local implementation: Gemma 4 E2B through Ollama for reasoning over slides, Whisper base.en through faster-whisper for speech-to-text, bge-small embeddings through fastembed for checklist matching, and a FastAPI backend with a React frontend. These are the components and model names reported by the creator at publication; they have not been independently verified here.
The creator says recordings and lecture slides stay on the laptop and describes the app as working without an internet connection. Those are claims about the described implementation, not an independent privacy audit or guarantee about every version or configuration.

Reported speed and hardware
The creator reports running Nkuzi on a 2014 Intel Core i5-4310U laptop with 8 GB of RAM, integrated graphics, no GPU, and no internet connection. On that setup, matching a chunk to checklist points reportedly took about 0.3 seconds, speech transcription took 3–5 seconds, and “Check me” took one to two minutes. These are observations from the creator’s laptop, not expected timings for other machines.
The architecture separates the faster live path—transcribing speech and matching checklist points—from slower, on-demand work such as generating a checklist or checking contradictions. This explains why a user may see checklist updates while speaking but need to wait for a deeper comparison.

Known limitations and setup considerations
- Accent and terminology: The creator reports that speech recognition struggled with Nigerian-accented English and medical vocabulary. This is a reported weakness, not a quantified accuracy result across speakers or subjects.
- One speaker at a time: The system supports one explainer at a time, even though a recap may be shared with a group.
- File preparation: Old .ppt files and scanned PDFs may need to be resaved in supported formats before use.
- Speech clarity: The creator says earphones or a headset with a microphone can help. No specific model is identified or tested.
- Processing delay: On the creator’s laptop, “Check me” was much slower than live checklist matching.
These points come from the creator’s account and are anecdotal. They are useful expectations for trying the workflow, but do not establish compatibility or performance across devices.

The creator reports that a friend, Nnia, tested Nkuzi on a phone connected over Wi-Fi to the creator’s laptop while explaining a COPD lecture. Nnia described it as “quite nice” for someone who likes studying alone and called it “a great tool for active recall.” This is one reported trial, not evidence of broader classroom or group-study testing.

The creator lists speech-recognition fine-tuning for African-accented clinical speech, topic history for study groups, possible Pidgin or Igbo explanations, and a one-click installer as future work. AfriSpeech-200 is mentioned as a possible resource for that future speech work; none of these roadmap items should be taken as shipped features.
The project article links to a GitHub project and describes it as MIT-licensed, but does not establish the current release package, supported operating systems, minimum specifications, or installation state. Readers should check the project’s current materials before assuming it can be installed on a particular machine.
Who may find Nkuzi useful
Nkuzi’s described workflow is most relevant to a student who has lecture files, wants to practice recalling them aloud, and values a local workflow. Its main distinction is the combination of slide-derived coverage tracking and a separate comparison against slide wording. It is less suitable as a sole source of truth: the creator reports transcription difficulties in some speech contexts, and a checklist item being ticked does not mean the explanation was correct.
