On weekdays from October 11 through November 14, 2026, NJ TRANSIT is diverting Midtown Direct trains on the Morris & Essex, Gladstone Branch, and Montclair-Boonton lines to Hoboken instead of Penn Station New York. Weekend Midtown Direct trains on those lines are scheduled to run to Penn Station. The temporary changes support the final Portal North Bridge track cutover; regular schedules are expected November 15, subject to safety testing. Check your line’s current timetable before leaving.
Which NJ TRANSIT trains are rerouted to Hoboken?
The fall 2026 weekday diversion applies to Midtown Direct trains on three routes:
- Morris & Essex line
- Gladstone Branch
- Montclair-Boonton line
These trains terminate at or depart from Hoboken rather than Penn Station New York during the weekday cutover period. NJ TRANSIT says all rail lines except the Atlantic City Rail Line have schedule changes. The Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line also have fewer trains operating into Penn Station New York because trains are using a single track between Newark and Secaucus. Consult the timetable for your specific line, even if it is not one of the three diverted routes. NJ TRANSIT’s Portal North Bridge cutover page has current service information.
Weekends are different
On weekends, Midtown Direct trains on the Morris & Essex, Gladstone Branch, and Montclair-Boonton lines are scheduled to operate to and from Penn Station New York. Do not use the weekday Hoboken routing to plan a weekend trip; verify the schedule and ticket destination for the day you travel.

When do the changes end?
Temporary schedules began Sunday, October 11, 2026. NJ TRANSIT says the final-track cutover work is scheduled to finish Saturday, November 14, and regular schedules are expected Sunday, November 15, subject to safety testing. Dates and service can change, so confirm the latest agency notice before traveling around the transition.
This is the second Portal North Bridge cutover, not the spring schedule. The first phase began February 15, 2026; regular schedules were expected March 15 subject to safety testing, and Amtrak said the first track entered passenger service March 16. That phase is complete.

Why are trains being diverted?
Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT are moving rail traffic from the century-old Portal Bridge to the new Portal North Bridge over the Hackensack River. The fall work transfers the final track and involves deactivating old infrastructure, configuring and activating new track alignments, integrating signaling, power, and communications systems, and testing and commissioning interlockings and safety systems. With work underway, trains operate on a single track between Newark and Secaucus.
The new bridge is a two-track fixed-span structure 50 feet above the river. Unlike the old swing bridge, it allows marine traffic to pass beneath without stopping rail traffic for bridge openings. NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak present improved reliability and capacity as project goals; those goals should not be mistaken for a published measurement of post-opening performance.

How can affected weekday riders continue to Manhattan?
For eligible Midtown Direct riders diverted to Hoboken, NJ TRANSIT lists three cross-honored connections. They serve different Manhattan endpoints, and their schedules and capacity are not interchangeable:

These arrangements apply to the specified routes and endpoints, not automatically to every PATH, ferry, or bus trip. The agency page gives separate instructions for monthly, weekly, FLEXPASS, and one-way ticket customers. In general, affected pass customers are directed to a Hoboken destination during the cutover, while weekday one-way riders are directed to buy to Hoboken. Weekend one-way riders need a Penn Station destination because the trains run directly there. Ticket validity and exceptions depend on the fare type; use NJ TRANSIT’s current cutover ticket guidance rather than assuming a ticket covers an alternate trip.

What should riders do before traveling?
- Open the current timetable for your line and check the date and direction of travel; construction schedules may differ from regular weekday or weekend service.
- Confirm your ticket destination and whether your fare is eligible for the listed cross-honoring arrangement.
- Allow extra time. NJ TRANSIT warns that alternate services have limited capacity and can experience significant peak crowding.
- Consider an off-peak trip if your schedule permits, and check for service notices again before departure.
The affected corridor is heavily used: in an Amtrak release dated March 12, 2026, NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kris Kolluri said the Newark–New York segment carries more than 400 trains and more than 200,000 NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak riders every weekday. This is an attributed figure, not an independent count of current cutover passengers or a measure of crowding on any one alternative.
