When a Nitrox server will not work, troubleshoot in this order: start the server and read its console, confirm every player has a compatible Nitrox and Subnautica version, allow the required executables through the firewall, then make UDP port 11000 reachable for internet players. Test with 127.0.0.1 or localhost first; this separates launcher and installation problems from router and NAT problems.
Use this diagnosis order first
Changing router settings before confirming that the server starts can hide the real fault. A Nitrox connection has several separate stages: the launcher must find Subnautica, the server process must start, the host computer must accept traffic, and the router must pass internet traffic to that computer. Work through each stage in order.

Watch the server window for critical errors. Do not proceed to port forwarding if the process exits, reports missing files, or reports that an address is already in use.
- Confirm the multiplayer interface appears. If the Multiplayer button is missing, treat the problem as a launcher, game-path, or installation issue rather than a remote-network issue.
- Test locally. On the host, use the setup’s
My serverroute with127.0.0.1orlocalhost. - Align software versions. Every participant should use a compatible Nitrox release and supported Subnautica installation.
- Permit the applications through the firewall. The host and, where applicable, joining computers need exceptions for the required executables.
- Only then expose the server to the internet. Nitrox uses UDP port
11000; forwarding and firewall rules must both permit it.
When the Nitrox server will not start
Read the server console before changing anything
The server window is the fastest way to distinguish a startup failure from a connection failure. Look for critical errors, then record the exact wording. A friend cannot connect to a process that never finished starting, regardless of the router configuration.
Verify the Subnautica game path
Check the path configured in the Nitrox launcher. A wrong or moved installation can prevent the launcher from bootstrapping multiplayer or leave the server without the files it needs. Correct the path, restart the launcher, and check whether the Multiplayer button appears.

Check for a port conflict
If another program is already using the server’s listening port, Nitrox may fail with an address-in-use error. Close other Nitrox instances and services that may have been configured to use the same port, then start one server process again. A container deployment can show the same condition as “Address already in use.”
Investigate missing-directory errors
Nitrox release notes for version 1.8.1.0 mention fixes for DirectoryNotFound startup failures and document a --data-path option. If the console reports a missing directory, confirm that the referenced folder exists and that the process has permission to read and write it. Where your installation method supports it, use the documented data-path option rather than inventing a new folder layout.

Nitrox logs are stored in %APPDATA%Nitroxlogs. Subnautica also writes a Player.log. Reproduce the failure once, then inspect the newest entries for path, permission, or startup exceptions. Keep the first error in the sequence; later messages are often consequences rather than causes.
Fix a missing Multiplayer button
A missing Multiplayer button usually means Nitrox did not load its multiplayer bootstrap correctly. It is not evidence that your router is blocking a friend.

- Open the Nitrox launcher and verify that its configured Subnautica path points to the actual installed game.
- Confirm that the game edition is one Nitrox supports and that the installation is complete.
- Close and relaunch Nitrox after correcting the path.
- Check the Nitrox log folder at
%APPDATA%Nitroxlogsand Subnautica’sPlayer.logfor the first startup error. - Resolve missing files, directory errors, or permission failures before attempting remote hosting.
If the button appears after these steps, test locally before changing firewall or router settings. If it remains absent, the remaining evidence is in the launcher and game logs, not in internet reachability.
Make every player’s versions compatible
Nitrox 1.8.1.0 release notes state that players using Epic Games, Steam, and Microsoft Store can play on the latest Subnautica version. The same release line dropped support for older Subnautica versions. A host and client can therefore fail to connect when one machine is on an older game build or a different, incompatible Nitrox build even though both installations launch normally.

- Install the same compatible Nitrox release on the host and all players.
- Use a supported Subnautica version on every machine; do not mix a current installation with an older game version that the release no longer supports.
- Check the game edition on each computer: Epic Games, Steam, or Microsoft Store installations are covered by the 1.8.1.0 compatibility statement when running the latest Subnautica version.
- After updating, restart Nitrox and the server so no old process remains in memory.
Do not interpret a version mismatch as a port problem. First make the software combination identical and supported, then repeat the local connection test.
Allow Nitrox and Subnautica through the firewall
A firewall can block a correctly running server even when the router is configured properly. The official hosting guidance specifically calls for firewall exceptions for Subnautica.exe and NitroxServer-Subnautica.exe. Apply the rule on the relevant machines, including the host and any computer that cannot establish the session.

Windows firewall procedure
- Open Windows Security, choose Firewall & network protection, and open Allow an app through firewall.
- Choose Change settings, then allow
Subnautica.exeandNitroxServer-Subnautica.exeon the network profiles you actually use. - If an executable is not listed, use Allow another app and browse to the file in your Subnautica or Nitrox installation.
- Save the rules, restart the Nitrox server, and test again.
Do not create a rule for an old executable left in a previous installation directory. The exception must point to the files used by the current launcher. If a security product has its own network controls, check those as well; a Windows Firewall allow-list does not automatically override a separate security suite.
Configure internet access on UDP 11000
Nitrox uses port 11000 UDP. Internet hosting requires that traffic sent to this UDP port reach the computer running NitroxServer-Subnautica.exe. Opening a port in the computer’s firewall without forwarding it on the router is incomplete, and forwarding it without a firewall exception is also incomplete.
Port-forwarding sequence
- Give the host computer a stable local address, using your router’s address-reservation feature if available. A changing local address can silently invalidate an existing rule.
- Sign in to the router’s administration interface and create a port-forwarding rule for UDP 11000.
- Set the destination to the host computer’s local address. Do not forward the rule to a different gaming PC or to the router itself.
- Save or apply the router configuration, then confirm the host firewall allows the Nitrox and Subnautica executables.
- Start the Nitrox server and leave it running while the remote player tries to join.
Router labels differ, so the feature may be called port forwarding, virtual server, or NAT forwarding. The protocol must be UDP, not only TCP. If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or otherwise does not give the router an inbound-reachable address, a normal forwarding rule may never work; use the virtual-LAN alternative below or ask the ISP whether inbound forwarding is available.
Why LAN works but internet joining fails
This symptom is useful: it shows that the game and server can communicate on the local network, while the path from the internet is failing. Concentrate on the host’s public reachability rather than reinstalling Nitrox.

- Confirm the router rule is for UDP
11000and points to the current host address. - Confirm the host computer’s firewall exception is active on the network profile in use.
- Check whether the router is behind another router or modem performing NAT. Double NAT can leave the forwarding rule on the wrong device.
- Check for carrier-grade NAT or an ISP policy that prevents inbound connections. In that situation, the router may show an address that is not directly reachable from the public internet.
- Keep the server running during the test. A closed server and a blocked port produce the same client-side timeout.
The official Nitrox guide supports a VPN-based virtual LAN as an alternative to direct forwarding. It can work when the router cannot accept inbound UDP forwarding, but every participant must install and join the same virtual network, and each computer still needs appropriate firewall permissions.

Direct forwarding versus a VPN virtual LAN

The guide supports both approaches but does not require a particular commercial VPN or router. Choose based on whether your network permits inbound UDP and whether asking every player to install a VPN is acceptable.

This message is a symptom, not a single diagnosis. Check the host and address in the order below.
- Ask the host to confirm that the Nitrox server window is still running and shows no critical startup error.
- Verify that the host completed firewall configuration for
Subnautica.exeandNitroxServer-Subnautica.exe. - Verify that UDP
11000is forwarded to the host’s current local address if the connection is over the internet. - Use the address supplied by the host’s Nitrox setup. A remote player must use the host’s externally reachable address after forwarding is configured;
127.0.0.1andlocalhostrefer to the joining computer itself and are not remote addresses. - Follow the launcher’s expected server-address fields exactly. A Nitrox issue warns that, in one server-entry workflow, you should not append
:11000to the address. Enter the address in the form that workflow requests rather than assuming a host-and-port notation. - Repeat the test after each change so you know which layer was fixed.
If the same client can join locally but not remotely, stop changing Nitrox files and focus on forwarding, NAT, and firewall reachability. If even the host cannot connect through the local route, return to startup, path, and version checks.

Separate connection failures from gameplay synchronization issues
A successful join does not mean every multiplayer system is fully synchronized. Nitrox 1.8.1.0 lists known synchronization gaps involving story PDA and terminal content, creatures, Cyclops health, player animations, scanner rooms, fires, and sleep.
Use the symptom to choose the next step:
- No server listed, timeout, or immediate disconnect: investigate startup, versions, firewall, address, and UDP 11000 reachability.
- You join, but a listed system behaves differently between players: compare the behavior with Nitrox’s known-issues list before repeatedly changing router settings.
- Only one feature is inconsistent while movement and the session remain connected: treat it as a synchronization limitation unless logs show a separate error.
This distinction prevents a known implementation limitation from being mistaken for a networking failure.
A complete pre-join checklist
- The Nitrox server process starts and remains open.
- The console shows no critical error, missing Subnautica files, directory failure, or address-in-use message.
- The launcher points to the correct Subnautica installation.
- The Multiplayer button is visible.
- Nitrox and Subnautica versions are compatible on every participant’s machine.
- The host can use the local

What to collect if the problem persists
When these checks do not resolve the issue, collect reproducible details rather than changing several settings at once. Note whether the failure occurs on localhost, LAN, or only over the internet; record the exact server-console error; and save the newest Nitrox files from %APPDATA%Nitroxlogs together with the relevant Subnautica Player.log. Include the Nitrox version, Subnautica edition, and whether the router uses another NAT layer. Those details identify whether the next investigation belongs to the launcher, the server process, or the network path.
