The console meant by “Not the GameCube, not the Wii U” is Nintendo’s Virtual Boy. The headline calls it Nintendo’s “most unsuccessful console,” but the available excerpt does not provide sales figures or a comparison method that would prove that ranking.
Which Nintendo console does the headline mean?
It means the Virtual Boy—not the GameCube or Wii U. Those two systems appear as contrasts in the headline; they are not the article’s subject. The exact-title result identifies the Virtual Boy as the console being discussed. Engadget’s article, syndicated by Yahoo Tech, is the source of that identification.
What does the available excerpt establish?
The excerpt says that Tetris 3D was the last Virtual Boy game released in North America, in March 1996, and that Nintendo discontinued the system not long afterward. It does not give an exact discontinuation date. The excerpt also does not establish launch timing, sales, specifications, or other details of the system’s history.
Is the Virtual Boy definitively Nintendo’s “most unsuccessful console”?
That is the headline’s characterization, not a verified ranking in the material available here. Calling one console “most unsuccessful” requires a defined measure—such as units sold or commercial performance—and comparable figures for Nintendo’s other systems. The accessible excerpt supplies neither a metric nor a dataset, so it supports identifying the Virtual Boy as the subject, but not treating the superlative as settled fact.

Why are the GameCube and Wii U mentioned?
They serve as headline contrasts, not as evidence for the Virtual Boy’s outcome. A 2021 Video Games Chronicle interview discusses the GameCube’s separate commercial history and reports about 22 million units sold. That GameCube figure cannot establish how the Virtual Boy performed, and the available material provides no comparable Wii U figures for this question.
