Nintendo has made one of Rayman’s strongest adventures easy to play on a modern console, while Ubisoft’s recent Rayman activity has centered on reissues and remakes. That contrast is why the return of Rayman 2: The Great Escape feels less like a routine catalog update and more like a reminder of a neglected series.
The character has not disappeared completely, but the evidence points to a franchise being preserved more actively by platforms and publishers than by its owner. For players, that still leaves several worthwhile ways to play Rayman—provided you know which release you are actually buying.
What Nintendo released
Rayman 2: The Great Escape joined the Nintendo 64 library in Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on December 17, 2025. It is the original Nintendo 64 version delivered through a subscription catalog, not a newly remade edition.
The game remains notable because it was a major 3D platformer at a time when the genre was establishing its conventions. ComicBook.com reported a 90 Metacritic score and described it as worth playing for fans of 3D platformers. The same report cautioned that its visuals, camera and controls feel dated, so the recommendation comes with expectations that should be set before you start.

Why the release highlights Ubisoft’s absence
The criticism is not that Ubisoft has literally erased Rayman. It is that the character has had little meaningful new-game presence while other classic mascots continue to receive regular projects. The cited coverage identifies Rayman’s last real appearance as downloadable content in Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, where he was a side character rather than the lead of a new Rayman game.
Nintendo’s catalog decision therefore creates an awkward contrast: Nintendo is actively resurfacing a respected Rayman title, while Ubisoft’s current activity is largely built around revisiting existing material. That pattern supports the description of Rayman as “forgotten” in practical terms, even though Ubisoft continues to use the brand in collections and remakes.

What still works
The strongest case for playing it is its identity as a classic 3D platformer. A 90 Metacritic score gives the game a substantial critical reputation, and its inclusion in the Expansion Pack removes the need to find original Nintendo 64 hardware or a second-hand cartridge.

What has aged
The Nintendo 64 presentation is not modernized into a new visual or control standard. Expect older-looking graphics, a camera that can require manual correction and controls that may feel less forgiving than those in contemporary platformers. Those limitations are part of the original release’s character, but they can also be deal-breakers if you expect a remake.
Who should try it
- Players who enjoy historically important 3D platformers and can tolerate period-specific controls.
- Rayman fans who want to understand why the series still has a devoted following.
- Switch owners already paying for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack who want the lowest-friction route to the Nintendo 64 version.

What is in Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition?
Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition is the clearest physical option for someone who wants an archival package rather than one game through a subscription. Nintendo Life reported a Nintendo Switch release date of June 26, 2026, with a listed US price of $29.99. That is a one-time US list price for the physical edition, not a subscription fee or a statement about prices in other regions.
The collection’s product description lists five versions, more than 120 additional levels, an SNES prototype and more than 50 minutes of new developer interviews. Those extras make it materially different from simply buying the original game again: the appeal is preservation and supplementary material as much as playability.

Is Rayman Legends still available?
Yes. Nintendo Everything reported in June 2026 that the original Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition would remain available on Switch in both digital and physical form. Ubisoft’s position, as quoted in that report, was that the original game would not be delisted from digital storefronts.
That availability matters because Rayman Legends Retold is a remake, not a replacement that makes the original inaccessible. The remake is described as adding content and narrative twists, while the Definitive Edition preserves the existing release for players who want the original Switch package.
Which Rayman release should you choose?
Choose Rayman 2 through Switch Online if you want the 3D classic
This is the direct route to the Nintendo 64 game. It makes the most sense for Expansion Pack subscribers who are curious about Rayman’s 3D era and accept dated camera and control design.

Choose the 30th Anniversary Edition for a physical archive
The collection is the better fit if you want a boxed Switch product, multiple versions and historical extras such as the SNES prototype and developer interviews. Its value comes from breadth and preservation rather than from being a brand-new numbered adventure.
Choose Legends: Definitive Edition for the existing Switch release
The original Legends package remains an accessible purchase in either format. It is the straightforward option for players who want that specific game without waiting for or choosing the remake.

Retold is presented as a reimagining with additional content and story changes. Treat it as a separate interpretation of Legends, not evidence that Ubisoft has returned to producing a wholly new Rayman series entry.

What Nintendo’s move says about Rayman’s future
Nintendo’s decision does not prove that a new Rayman game is imminent, and the available reporting does not establish a single official reason for Ubisoft’s limited use of the character. It does show that there is still an audience for the series: a platform holder considered the Nintendo 64 original worth adding to its premium catalog, and publishers continue to package Rayman’s history for modern hardware.
That is the uncomfortable part for longtime fans. Rayman is visible enough to be reissued, remade and used as downloadable content, but not currently visible as the star of a newly announced numbered game in the coverage surrounding these releases. Until that changes, Nintendo’s preservation work may be the most prominent way new players encounter one of Ubisoft’s most distinctive platforming characters.
