In the United States and Canada, a Nintendo Switch console and most Nintendo accessories generally carry a 12-month limited warranty from the purchase date. You need proof of purchase, and the warranty is for defects in materials or workmanship—not accidental breakage, liquid exposure, unauthorized repairs, or ordinary misuse. Nintendo chooses whether to repair your unit or replace it, and the replacement or parts may be refurbished. Outside warranty, or when the fault is excluded, Nintendo may offer paid service, but it does not publish one universal U.S./Canada price list.

The practical first move is to troubleshoot through Nintendo Support, then open an official service request for your region. Do not mail a console or controller before Nintendo gives you a service case and shipping instructions.

What the Nintendo Switch warranty actually covers

Nintendo’s U.S./Canada service information describes a one-year warranty for hardware products, accessories and Nintendo-published games. The formal warranty measures the period as twelve months from the date of purchase and applies to the original purchaser. For a Switch owner, that normally includes the console and Nintendo accessories such as Joy-Con controllers, provided the problem is a manufacturing or workmanship defect.

Defects in materials and workmanship

Covered examples are failures that arise during normal, intended use because a component or assembly was defective. A console that will not power on despite following Nintendo’s troubleshooting steps, or a controller with a qualifying hardware fault, can be evaluated under the warranty. Nintendo decides whether the reported problem meets the warranty standard after receiving the product and reviewing purchase information.

Nintendo Neon Purple/Neon Orange Joy-Con (L-R) - Switch
  • Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
  • Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible

Proof of purchase is essential

Nintendo asks for proof of purchase from an authorized retailer when it determines warranty eligibility. Keep the dated receipt, order confirmation or other document that identifies the product and purchase date. A service request can be created without having every detail at hand, but the warranty decision depends on documentation Nintendo accepts. If the date or seller cannot be verified, Nintendo may treat the job as paid service.

What is excluded or can void coverage

The warranty does not cover physical damage. Cracked housings, broken ports, bent connectors, crushed screens and similar damage can still be eligible for a paid evaluation, but they are not warranty repairs. Liquid damage is likewise outside the warranty.

Nintendo’s formal limitations also exclude or can void coverage for:

  • Accidents, negligence or unreasonable use.
  • Unauthorized modifications, tampering or alteration.
  • Parts, accessories or repairs not authorized by Nintendo.
  • Commercial or rental use rather than ordinary consumer use.
  • Serial numbers that have been altered, removed or made unreadable.

Opening a console, fitting an unauthorized part or using a third-party repair that changes the device can make a later warranty claim ineligible, even if the new symptom appears unrelated. Describe the problem accurately when you contact support; concealing damage can delay diagnosis or result in a charge.

Will Nintendo repair your Switch or replace it?

There is no customer-selected repair-versus-replacement option. Nintendo’s factory-service terms give Nintendo sole discretion to repair a product or replace it. A replacement can be a refurbished product, and a repair can use refurbished parts. Nintendo says those parts and products must meet functional specifications for a new product, although minor cosmetic imperfections may remain.

What a replacement means in practice

If Nintendo replaces the unit, the returned device may not be the exact serial-numbered console you shipped. Save data and other information may not be recoverable during service, so a replacement should be treated as a possible data-loss event rather than a guaranteed swap with all content intact. Nintendo’s service terms do not promise that every local save, user profile or setting will be restored.

Service warranty after the job

A repaired or replaced product receives a service warranty beginning when it is shipped back to you. That coverage lasts for 100 days or the remainder of the original manufacturer warranty, whichever is longer. Keep the service paperwork and shipping date so you can establish which period applies if the same serviced product develops another qualifying problem.

How much does Nintendo Switch repair cost?

U.S. and Canada

Nintendo states that factory service may be available for a fee after the warranty expires or when the fault is not covered. The U.S./Canada pages direct customers through the service process for product-specific pricing rather than publishing one fee table for every Switch model and failure type. The eventual quote can depend on the diagnosis, the item submitted and the regional service channel.

Because no single official U.S./Canada schedule is provided on the cited support pages, an online estimate from a different region should not be used as a promise of your charge. Ask Nintendo for the amount and for shipping terms before approving paid work.

Published Nintendo UK maximums

Nintendo UK published the following maximum out-of-warranty prices, effective 1 October 2021. They are UK figures in pounds, apply per item, and are not current U.S. prices. The schedule says the final amount may be lower after diagnosis. Confirm with Nintendo UK that the schedule still applies before relying on it.

Item Published UK maximum Qualification
Nintendo Switch console £120 Out-of-warranty maximum per item; dated 1 October 2021
Nintendo Switch OLED console £190.50 Out-of-warranty maximum per item; dated 1 October 2021
Nintendo Switch Lite £108 Out-of-warranty maximum per item; dated 1 October 2021
Single Joy-Con £26.40 Out-of-warranty maximum per item; dated 1 October 2021

Official repair or replacement: which path fits your case?

Decision factor Warranty service Paid service
Eligibility Qualifying defect during the manufacturer period, with accepted proof of purchase Expired warranty or a fault excluded from warranty; Nintendo must confirm availability
Damage type Manufacturing or workmanship defect May include physical or liquid damage if Nintendo elects to service it
Proof of purchase Needed for warranty review Still useful for identification and history; price is based on the service case
Region Use the Nintendo channel serving your residence Use the same regional channel; terms and currency differ
Price No charge when Nintendo accepts the claim under warranty Product-specific quote; no universal U.S./Canada table is published
Outcome Nintendo chooses repair or replacement Nintendo chooses whether the requested paid work is available and how it is performed
Refurbished hardware Refurbished parts or a refurbished replacement may be used Refurbished parts or products may also be used under factory-service terms
Data Saved data may not be recoverable Saved data may not be recoverable

Compare any quoted service amount with the cost of another console or controller available in your market, but Nintendo does not publish a replacement-price figure in the support material covered here. A quote is therefore the reliable number for your specific device; do not assume the UK caps or another owner’s invoice applies to you.

How to send a Nintendo Switch to Nintendo

Nintendo explicitly asks customers not to send products without contacting support first. Follow this sequence so the service center can identify the item and so you do not lose a warranty claim through an avoidable shipping mistake.

Nintendo Blue/Neon Yellow Joy-Con (L-R) - Switch
  • Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy 2 player action in supported games
  • Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
  1. Run Nintendo’s troubleshooting. Check the official support steps for the symptom, including power, charging, display, controller pairing and software checks that match your model. A simple settings or cable issue can avoid a shipment.
  2. Choose the correct regional support site. U.S. and Canada residents use Nintendo’s North American service-request process. Residents elsewhere must use their own Nintendo support channel; a North American case is not a universal international ticket.
  3. Open an online service request or contact consumer support. Enter the console or accessory details, the symptom, serial number and contact information exactly as requested. Nintendo may ask you to complete additional troubleshooting before issuing shipping instructions.
  4. Prepare proof of purchase. Have the dated retailer document ready for upload or inspection. It is the evidence Nintendo uses to decide whether the claim falls inside the manufacturer period.
  5. Read the case instructions before packing. Send only the items Nintendo requests. Remove game cards, microSD cards and personal accessories unless the case instructions specifically require them, and record the serial number and condition with photographs.
  6. Package the product securely and use the assigned label. Follow Nintendo’s packaging and carrier directions. Keep the tracking number and a copy of the service case until the item is returned.
  7. Review the diagnosis or quote. For a non-covered or out-of-warranty fault, Nintendo may present a fee before proceeding. Approve or decline through the channel described in the case rather than sending payment or parts to an unverified address.

What to do before shipping

Protect data you can still access

Back up any data Nintendo’s tools and your account settings allow before the console leaves your possession. Do not assume a repair will preserve local saves; Nintendo warns that saved data may not be recoverable during factory service. Confirm that you know the Nintendo Account credentials needed to restore content after service.

Document the condition

  • Photograph the front, back, screen, ports and serial-number label.
  • Write down included accessories and the exact symptom, including when it occurs.
  • Remove cards and accessories that are not part of the case.
  • Retain the receipt, case number and carrier tracking record.

Do not attempt a last-minute repair

Do not open the housing, apply liquid cleaners, bend a connector back or install an unauthorized component while a claim is pending. Such actions can create the very tampering or physical-damage exclusion that prevents warranty service.

Common situations and the sensible next step

The console fails during the warranty period

Complete Nintendo’s troubleshooting and start a regional service request with your proof of purchase. If Nintendo confirms a covered defect, the factory determines whether to repair or replace it without a warranty service charge.

A Joy-Con develops a hardware fault

Joy-Con controllers are Nintendo accessories within the same warranty and service framework. Submit the controller through Nintendo’s Joy-Con service path rather than assuming a retail replacement is the only remedy. Eligibility still depends on the purchase evidence, defect assessment and exclusions.

The Switch was dropped or exposed to liquid

Those conditions are outside warranty. Contact Nintendo anyway: physical damage is not covered, but Nintendo says paid service may still be possible. Wait for a diagnosis and quote before deciding whether repair is worthwhile.

The warranty period has ended

Open a service request to learn whether factory service is available and what Nintendo will charge for your model and fault. The absence of a published U.S./Canada fee table means only the case-specific quote is dependable.

The serial number is missing or altered

An altered or removed serial number is listed among the warranty limitations. Tell support before shipping; a service center may be unable to verify eligibility or identify the product.

Regional, timing and expectation checks

Warranty terms and prices are tied to the region handling the claim. The U.S./Canada process is intended for residents of those markets, while Nintendo UK and other regions publish separate instructions and currencies. Do not convert a UK maximum into a Canadian or U.S. estimate, and do not assume a local retailer’s protection plan is part of Nintendo’s manufacturer warranty.

Nintendo’s service-request FAQ says a request generally expires six months after it is set up. If you wait beyond that window, you may need to create a new request and repeat the eligibility information. Keep the product, case correspondence and proof of purchase together until the service is complete.

After Nintendo returns the product

Inspect the console or controller as soon as it arrives. Check that the serial information and visible condition match the service paperwork, test the original symptom, pair controllers and confirm charging and display functions. Sign in and restore permitted content only after verifying the hardware. Retain the return documentation because the service warranty starts when the repaired or replaced product ships back and lasts for the longer of 100 days or the remainder of the original warranty.

If the same issue remains, refer to the existing case and service-warranty terms rather than opening the device yourself. If Nintendo supplied a replacement, remember that cosmetic differences can occur with refurbished hardware even though the functional specification is intended to meet new-product standards.
