Short answer: Choose Mario Kart World for racing, four-player play on one console, or the largest online groups. Choose Nintendo Switch Sports for motion-controlled sports and an active, shared-room game night. The title “Nintendo Switch Sports Resort” is not Nintendo’s official name; the game is officially Nintendo Switch Sports.
What the two games offer
These are not two versions of the same multiplayer idea. Nintendo Switch Sports is a collection of motion-controlled activities. Nintendo currently lists eight: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara. The exact number of simultaneous participants depends on the activity and the mode.

Which is better for four people sharing one console?
Pick Mario Kart World when everyone wants to race
Nintendo lists Mario Kart World for one to four players on a single Switch 2. That directly fits a four-person couch session: connect the controllers, select a local mode and race without bringing in another console or an online membership. Grand Prix is the structured choice for a sequence of races; VS Race is better when the group wants to choose individual events; Battle provides a different objective from ordinary racing. Free Roam is available for groups that want to explore rather than follow a standard race ladder.
The one-console limit is four. A fifth person cannot join the same local session by adding another controller. For more people, move to local wireless between nearby systems or to online play.
Pick Nintendo Switch Sports when the room wants several sports
The product listing also gives Nintendo Switch Sports a one-system headline range of one to four players. Unlike a four-kart race, however, the number who can participate at the same time is activity-specific. Bowling, Soccer, Basketball or another selected sport may organize players differently, so do not treat “four players” as a guarantee that all four will act simultaneously in every activity.

The physical gestures are part of the activity, making it a better fit when the group wants to stand up and play rather than remain focused on a conventional racing controller.
Which game supports the larger online group?
Mario Kart World: up to 24 online players
Nintendo describes the online experience this way: “Up to 24 players from near and far* can play against each other.” The asterisk refers to the requirement for internet access, Nintendo Switch Online and a Nintendo Account. The US store listing specifies online play for two to 24 players.
This is the clear choice for a club, extended family or friend group that may exceed a single household. The 24-player figure is a product specification, not a promise about matchmaking quality, latency or how enjoyable a particular lobby will be. Those practical factors depend on each participant’s connection and Nintendo’s live service conditions.
Nintendo Switch Sports: two online players on the product listing
Nintendo’s product listing gives Nintendo Switch Sports an online range of one to two players. That makes it suitable for an individual competing online or for two people sharing a console and connecting with others through the game’s online modes, subject to the activity’s own rules.

It is not the choice for a single online room containing a dozen friends. If your deciding requirement is the largest listed lobby, Mario Kart World wins by a wide margin.

- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements

- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Do you need a Switch 2?
Mario Kart World is a Switch 2 title
Nintendo lists Mario Kart World as launching on June 5, 2025, for Nintendo Switch 2. A Nintendo Switch 2 is therefore a prerequisite for playing it. If your household owns only the original Nintendo Switch, the game’s multiplayer player counts do not change that hardware requirement.
Nintendo Switch Sports works on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo Switch Sports is a Nintendo Switch game. Nintendo says it is supported on Switch 2 and behaves consistently with the original Switch version. That makes it the practical option for a household that has not moved to the newer console, while also allowing Switch 2 owners to use it.
Platform compatibility can settle the comparison before modes or player counts matter: an original-Switch household can run Nintendo Switch Sports, but cannot use Mario Kart World without the required Switch 2 hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow local multiplayer is organized
One-system Mario Kart World session
- Use a Nintendo Switch 2 with the game installed or inserted.
- Connect the controllers for up to four local players.
- Open the multiplayer option and choose Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, VS Race, Battle or Free Roam.
- Set the race or battle rules, then assign each participant a controller and start.
Because Nintendo’s listed one-system range is one to four, this setup does not require extra consoles for a four-person room. It also avoids the online membership requirement because the participants are playing on the same system.
One-system Nintendo Switch Sports session
- Confirm that the console has compatible Joy-Con-family controllers for the people who will play.
- Choose one of the eight listed activities.
- Check that the selected sport supports the number of people you want active at once; Nintendo’s LAN guidance warns that simultaneous limits vary by sport.
- Follow the activity’s controller prompt. If you select Soccer gameplay that requires it, attach the Leg Strap.
The one-system listing allows one to four players, but an activity may rotate participants, assign teams differently or cap simultaneous play below the headline maximum. Select the sport before assuming that all four people will be active together.
Nearby consoles: local wireless versus LAN
Mario Kart World local wireless
Nintendo lists local wireless play for two to eight players. This is the useful middle ground when a group is together but has more than four people or wants each player to use a separate nearby system. The listing gives the range, but each participant needs access to compatible hardware and a copy of the game; the one-console four-player figure does not extend across systems automatically.
Mario Kart World wired LAN
Nintendo’s support instructions document LAN play for up to 24 players. Each console must be docked and connected by Ethernet. A practical setup can require additional consoles, additional copies of the game, docks, Ethernet cables, a router and, depending on the number of connections, a network switch.
This is a venue-style arrangement rather than a casual living-room setup. Plan the network and hardware before the event: the 24-player LAN figure assumes the required consoles, wired connections and software are available.
Rank #3
- The ultimate game that brings together 30 different sports
- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries
- Unlock new costumes and choose to play with motion or buttons on NSW
Nintendo Switch Sports LAN
Nintendo’s LAN instructions allow up to eight total players across up to four consoles, with two players per console. The same instructions warn that the simultaneous limit varies by sport. In other words, eight is the total arrangement Nintendo describes for the network, not a guarantee that every one of the eight can participate in every activity at the same time.
For a group considering a multi-console sports session, choose the activity first, then verify its player behavior. A network that is adequate for one sport may still require turn-taking in another.
Controllers and accessories
What Nintendo Switch Sports requires
Nintendo Switch Sports uses compatible Joy-Con-family controllers, and the supported controller can depend on the sport. Nintendo explicitly says Switch and Switch 2 Pro Controllers are not compatible. If the console does not have enough compatible Joy-Con controllers for the intended participants, the one-system player range alone will not create a four-person session.
The Leg Strap is required for some Soccer gameplay. Nintendo’s official information says the accessory is sold separately where applicable. Treat it as an activity-specific requirement rather than a universal requirement for every sport in the collection.
Answering “Do I need extra Joy-Cons?”
You need enough compatible Joy-Con-family controllers for the people who will play simultaneously, subject to the selected sport’s rules. Nintendo lists up to four players on one system, but the listing does not establish a single controller bundle that covers every four-player configuration. Check the activity prompt and controller compatibility before the event, and do not plan around Pro Controllers because Nintendo excludes them.
Which is better for family game night?
Choose Nintendo Switch Sports for an active shared room
Its eight activities let a group change the type of play without changing software. The Joy-Con motion controls make the activity visible to people watching the screen, and the collection works especially well when the point of the evening is to rotate through short sports rather than commit to a long race series.
Its limitation is planning: the number of simultaneous players changes with the sport, and some Soccer play needs the Leg Strap. A host should decide which activities are on the schedule and confirm the available controllers before guests arrive.
Choose Mario Kart World for a focused competitive session
Racing is easier to organize when everyone should be active at the same time. Four people can share one Switch 2, and larger groups can move to local wireless or online modes. The range of formats also lets the host switch between structured racing, elimination-style Knockout Tour, Battle and Free Roam without leaving the game.
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
- More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.
It is less suitable if the group specifically wants motion-controlled sports or does not own a Switch 2. Those are hardware and experience differences, not settings that can be fixed inside the game.

Online setup checklist
Before starting Mario Kart World online
- Use a Nintendo Switch 2, because the game is a Switch 2 title.
- Confirm internet access.
- Sign in with a Nintendo Account.
- Make sure each online participant has the Nintendo Switch Online membership required for online play.
- Choose whether the group will use ordinary online play or a separately arranged LAN session. LAN requires the wired equipment and extra copies, docks and consoles described by Nintendo.
Before starting Nintendo Switch Sports online
- Use a compatible Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 setup.
- Confirm internet access and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Plan for the product listing’s one-to-two-player online range.
- Use compatible Joy-Con-family controllers for the selected activity; do not substitute a Switch or Switch 2 Pro Controller.
- If the planned Soccer mode requires it, have the Leg Strap available.
Common multiplayer problems and fixes
“We have five people, but only one console.”
Mario Kart World supports up to four players on one system, so a fifth participant requires another arrangement: local wireless, online play or a LAN setup. Nintendo Switch Sports also lists up to four players on one system; adding a fifth controller does not bypass that headline limit.
“The sport will not let everyone play at once.”
That can be normal in Nintendo Switch Sports. Nintendo warns that simultaneous player limits vary by sport. Try another activity or follow the game’s rotation and team prompts rather than treating the one-to-four product range as a universal per-sport capacity.
“The controller is not recognized in Switch Sports.”
Check that it is a compatible Joy-Con-family controller. Nintendo says Switch and Switch 2 Pro Controllers are not compatible with the game. Then review the selected sport’s controller prompt; support can differ by activity.
“Online play is unavailable.”
Both games require Nintendo Switch Online for online play. Verify the membership, internet connection and Nintendo Account requirements before troubleshooting the game mode itself.
“We expected 24 people in Mario Kart World on one console.”
The 24-player figure applies to online play. Nintendo lists one-system play for up to four and local wireless for two to eight. A 24-player LAN session also needs multiple docked consoles connected by Ethernet and the additional equipment specified in Nintendo’s support instructions.
Bottom line: which one should you buy?
Buy Mario Kart World if your priority is racing, a clean four-player session on one Switch 2, local wireless for up to eight or online groups as large as 24. Its platform requirement is decisive: you need Nintendo Switch 2.
Buy Nintendo Switch Sports if your priority is motion-controlled play, several sports in one package, or a shared-room activity that works on the original Nintendo Switch as well as Switch 2. Plan around compatible Joy-Con-family controllers, the activity-specific simultaneous limits and the Leg Strap requirement for some Soccer gameplay.
Neither game is universally better. The documented multiplayer specifications point to two different winners: Mario Kart World for racing scale and straightforward simultaneous competition, and Nintendo Switch Sports for active sports variety in the same room.
